In an exclusive India Today interview, senior BJP leader and former Chief Minister Uma Bharti offered perspectives on various national issues and personal experiences. She stated that Nathuram Godse's act was not just the killing of Mahatma Gandhi but also 'killed the future of the country' and Gandhi's vision for a self-reliant India. Bharti recounted her return to the BJP, detailing senior leadership's role, and discussed the Ram Janmabhoomi movement, expressing pride and no regrets over the Babri structure demolition. Delhi Confidential: Seattle Warmth
Amid the frostiness in India-US ties over trade tariffs, senior Seattle functionaries hailed Indian-Americans at an event organised to celebrate India's Independence Day. On the day, the Tricolour was unfurled on top of the Space Needle, an icon of the city's skyline. Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell and other dignitaries acknowledged the contributions of the Indian-Americans in shaping Seattle's journey to become a tech hub in the Pacific Northwest. Claiming Space Off the political landscape for quite some time, former Union minister Uma Bharti was recently the chief guest at an event in Bareilly's Aonla Assembly segment where a statue of freedom fighter Avanti Bai Lodhi was unveiled. Organised by UP Cabinet minister Dharampal Singh, the event was attended by a number of senior Lodh community leaders, including Union Minister of State B L Verma and MP Sakshi Maharaj. The leaders highlighted the role of OBCs, especially the Lodh community, in strengthening the BJP. Sources said the event was aimed at seeking better political representation for the community at a time when Dharampal is being seen as among the probables for the UP BJP president's post. Desirable, Undesirable After assuming additional charge as the Delhi Police chief, S B K Singh assigned an unusual task to the Special CPs (law and order) of both zones — to list 'undesirable' individuals who get their photographs clicked with police officers. Insiders say Singh got to know that some shady individuals establish contact with police officers, get clicked with them and misuse such photographs to their advantage in unlawful activities. He also made it clear that any contact with such characters should be avoided and asked the Special CPs to prepare a list of such individuals and submit it to the Special CP (intelligence) by August 31.

BJP netas meet Pragya to extend support, a day after Uma drops in
Bhopal: A week after her acquittal by a NIA court in the 2008 Malegaon blast case, former Bhopal Lok Sabha MP Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur got a visit from the state BJP top brass. State BJP president Hemant Khandelwal, party's in-charge of Madhya Pradesh affairs Mahendra Singh and state party organisational general secretary Hitanand Sharma reached the residence of the former MP on Thursday evening to extend their support after the court's verdict. The state BJP called it a courtesy visit. However, former MP chief minister Uma Bharti met Pragya Thakur ahead of the state leaders. On Wednesday, Bharti garlanded her, touched her feet, kissed her forehead and embraced her with tears in her eyes. Uma Bharti described Pragya Thakur as a messiah. "This is an emotional moment. We had met in jail. That too was an emotional meeting. The amount of tapasya Pragya Didi underwent, even I would not be able to endure. I think she is a messiah. "She underwent inconceivable torture with steadfast courage. Those who used the phrase saffron terror should now be charge with sedition," Uma Bharti said. "Didi (Uma Bharti) always spreads love. Today, she has come to honour saffron. She has always struggled for Hindutva. When I was in jail, she raised her voice in my support. She did what no man had the courage to do," Pragya Thakur said after her meeting with Uma Bharti. Less than 15 hours after the meeting between Pragya Thakur and Uma Bharti, state BJP leaders rushed to her residence. Following the meeting, state BJP president Hemant Khandelwal said that the allegations levelled against Pragya Thakur were sad and unfortunate. "She has fought an extraordinary battle for Sanatan. Truth can be disturbed but not defeated. The court's decision has proven that a person following Sanatan Dharma can never be involved in a terrorism," Khandelwal said. Handing her a flower bouquet, the state BJP functionaries congratulated her on the acquittal in the Malegaon blast case. However, sources in state BJP said the visit by the governing party top brass came a day too late. Sources said that the meeting could have come a day or two earlier since she has been a BJP MP and the verdict has been in her favour. Her acquittal also backs the party's core agenda that there is no Hindu or saffron terror as was claimed by the Congress. Khandelwal also said that the Congress, which created narratives like "Hindu terrorism" should always remember that a Hindu can never be a terrorist. "The court's decision has given an answer to those who insult Sanatan Dharma, sants and saffron. The seven accused persons including Pragya Thakur have endured unbearable pain, social boycott and political attacks in the last 17 years. Due to the greed for votes and politics of appeasement, Congress and its allies not only implicated innocent people, but also made an organised effort to tarnish the image of the entire Hindu society. There is a wave of happiness among followers of Hindu religion due to this decision," the BJP state chief said. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). BJP's Uma Bharti slams own govt over Dharali tragedy—‘we shouldn't commit sin of destroying rivers'
On Tuesday afternoon, flash floods and landslides inundated the Dharali village in Uttarakhand's Uttarkashi district, which is located 2,680 metre above sea level, causing a loss of lives and widespread damage to infrastructure. At least four people have died and dozens are missing. In a series of posts on X in Hindi, she said it is imperative that 'we immediately pause and maintain a balance between nature, environment, tourism, and faith in the development process in Himalayan states'. New Delhi: Former Union minister Uma Bharti has cautioned the BJP against committing the 'sin' of destroying the Himalayas, the Ganga, and other ever-flowing rivers, as she sought to blame her own party-led governments at the Centre and Uttarakhand for the destructive flash floods in the state's Dharali village. The Dharali village is close to Gangotri and is a major stopover for pilgrims on the way to the Gangotri Dham. Bharti referred to a 2023 Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) report that Joshimath (also in Uttarakhand) experienced a land subsidence of around five centimeters in just 12 days, between 27 December 2022 and 8 January 2023. The former Madhya Pradesh chief minister alleged the ISRO report that came after this was 'immediately withdrawn by ISRO itself'. 'We ignored that warning,' she said. ThePrint had reported in 2023 that as per an ISRO report released in January that year, Joshimath experienced the land subsidence. The ISRO report was taken down from their website after the government issued a gag order on sharing 'confusing' information with the public at a time of crisis. Bharti said the 'terrible' tragedy that happened in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand is 'giving us a big warning'. While she did not specify the Himachal Pradesh tragedy she was referring to, the state witnessed devastating flash floods last year and also this year that killed scores of people. On the Dharali flash floods, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said Tuesday night that 70 people had been rescued. The authorities are working to rescue others feared trapped in the debris. Uma Bharti added, 'We, the people of BJP, must not commit the sin of destroying the Himalayas, the Ganga, and other ever-flowing rivers during our time, and must ensure any such future possibility is also prevented.' 'The root cause of the tragedy in Dharali and Harsil was not just the cloudburst,' she said. 'Natural lakes on the hills above Dharali were filled beyond their limits due to heavy rains and the water from some of them cascaded down the hills, carrying with it heavy debris, causing great devastation and a loss of lives.' She said these were natural lakes but 'now some power projects, some being built with permission and some in stealth, are leading to the creation of hundreds of such lakes in the mountainsdue to which people are facing loss of lives be it in Joshimath, Dharali or Harsil. And the invaluable heritage of the nation is getting destroyed'. Bharti served as the minister for water resources, river development and Ganga rejuvenation from 16 May 2014 to 3 September 2017. She then became the minister for drinking water and sanitation, and held the position till 24 May 2019. 'The Ganga Action Plan of the Ministry of Water Resources was prepared between October 2014 and September 2016 and it was also launched. It can be applied to the Himalayas and all the Himalayan rivers. But after that it came to a halt, which also includes the affidavit given by the Ganga Ministry (Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation) in the Supreme Court,' she added. She urged the government to start it again. 'The Ganga and its tributaries should be saved, the Himalayas should be saved, faith should be maintained, development should be done and employment should also increase in the mountains. But there should be no destruction in the name of development. This is the action plan which has become resultless after being implemented in instalments,' she explained.
