Urban Extension Road to open by August, will boost connectivity between Delhi, UP & Haryana
Come August, it will be easier to travel from Outer Delhi to the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport. The Centre's ambitious Urban Extension Road (UER)-II project is 95% complete, officials have said, and is expected to be finished in two months. It will also bring Chandigarh closer to Gurgaon and IGIA and boost connectivity between the Capital, and neighbouring Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, as per officials. The Rs 8,000-crore project, which is set to halve the travel time between Outer Delhi and parts of the NCR to IGIA, spans 74 km. 'The project will not only reduce traffic congestion but will also curb vehicular pollution, save fuel and cut travel time… it will boost connectivity between Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh… it will also provide direct connectivity between Sonipat and Gurgaon,' said an official. The project was conceptualised as part of the Delhi Master Plan 2021 as the third Ring Road of Delhi, as per a government document on the decongestion plan. However, the project was later declared a national highway, which has been developed in five packages. Of the total, three packages — 1, 2, and 3 fall in Delhi, and the remaining in Haryana. Currently, Delhi has two Ring Roads — Inner and Outer Ring Road. Easing traffic congestion on the Inner and Outer Ring roads and boosting connectivity across Outer, North, Northwest, West, and Southwest Delhi are among the key aims of the project. The expressway starts from NH-44 in Alipur and ends at Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway on NH-48 near Mahipalpur, passing through the industrial areas of Outer Delhi like Bawana, Rohini, Mundka, Bakkarwala, Najafgarh, and Dwarka — forming a half ring or circle, said officials. The stretch is also set to be a key link between Haryana's Bahadurgarh from West Delhi's Najafgarh, and the Dwarka Expressway and Gurgaon. It also links Eastern and Western Peripheral Expressways with an eye on easing snarls. 'It is one of the most ambitious projects of Delhi and it will connect the Outer and South Delhi, especially the rural parts of the city…The construction of this project will benefit some of the undeveloped areas in Delhi, such as Najafgarh, Mundka, Karala, Alipur, and Bawana, providing quicker access to key locations in South Delhi, Noida, and Faridabad, and improving connectivity to major highways like the NH-48,' the official explained. The project is being developed by the DDA and the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI).

Projects worth Rs 35,000 crore underway under NHAI: Delhi CM
New Delhi [India], June 5 (ANI): Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Wednesday said that major projects worth Rs 35,000 crore under NHAI are currently being built in the national capital, while earlier projects worth Rs 64,000 crore have been completed. More projects worth Rs 24,000 crore are also set to begin soon. The meeting was held at the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Delhi. Gupta thanked the Central Government and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari for approving and completing several major road and infrastructure projects in the city. During the press conference, Rekha Gupta said, 'I want to thank the Central Government and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari for the massive support given to Delhi through several important road and infrastructure projects. Right now, a major project worth Rs 35,000 crore is being built in Delhi under the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). Earlier, projects worth Rs 64,000 crore were successfully completed. In the near future, projects worth another Rs 24,000 crore, whose detailed project reports (DPRs) are ready, will also begin.' Gupta said that several major road projects are being planned to reduce traffic jams and pollution in the city. She announced that a 7-kilometre tunnel from Shiv Murti to Nelson Mandela Road, new highways linking Delhi to Katra, Amritsar and Dehradun, and an elevated road from INA to the airport are part of the plan. Roads like Rohtak Road, Nangloi, Ashram, and Badarpur will also be made signal-free soon. 'All these efforts aim to reduce traffic congestion and pollution in Delhi. To improve traffic flow, a 7-kilometre underground tunnel will be constructed from Shiv Murti to Nelson Mandela Road. There will also be an elevated road connecting INA to the airport, which will later extend to Faridabad and Gurgaon. A new highway from Delhi to Katra and Amritsar will be developed and linked to the Urban Extension Road (UER 2). Another major highway will run from Alipur to Tronica City and will connect Delhi to Dehradun. This means people travelling from Haryana to Dehradun or from Dehradun to Noida won't need to enter Delhi, easing traffic inside the city. A tunnel from Sarai Kale Khan to Indira Gandhi Airport is also being considered. Several other roads in Delhi, including Rohtak Road, Nangloi, Ashram, Badarpur, and MJ Road, have been taken over by NHAI and will be made signal-free. Their work will start soon,' Gupta said. 'NHAI will look into the drainage system, and from that drainage systems will also be improved along these roads, solving long-standing issues of waterlogging caused by multiple agencies. PWD will also look into it. Additionally, Rs 150 crore has been approved for Road Over Bridges (ROBs) and Road Under Bridges (RUBs),' Gupta said. She said that ongoing and upcoming projects worth over Rs 1.25 lakh crore will help reduce traffic jams, lower pollution, and improve travel in and around Delhi. 'Overall, I thank the Central Government for the projects worth Rs 1.25 lakh crore that are helping transform Delhi into a modern, clean, and green city. With continued support, Delhi will become a world-class capital,' Gupta said. In the meeting, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and Delhi Lt Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena were also present in the meeting. Delhi to get ₹24k-cr road projects with Centre's aid: CM Gupta
The central government has given to the national capital various road projects worth ₹1.25 lakh crore over the last years due to which key connectivity stretches are in the works, including an underground tunnel from Shiv Murti to Nelson Mandela Road, an elevated corridor from Sarai Kale Khan to IGI Airport, the Delhi–Katra–Amritsar Expressway, and a 20km-long new road from Inderlok metro station to Sonepat via Munak canal, chief minister Rekha Gupta said on Wednesday. Detailed reports of each of the projects have been prepared and the work is likely to begin soon, she said. The announcement came after a high-level meeting chaired by Union minister of road transport and highways Nitin Gadkari. Lieutenant governor V K Saxena, Union minister of state Harsh Malhotra, Delhi cabinet ministers, members of Parliament Ramvir Singh Bidhuri and Manoj Tiwari, and senior government officials were also present at the meeting. The CM said that the aforementioned projects 'will be crucial in easing the traffic between Delhi and Haryana.' 'Projects worth nearly ₹35,000 crore are currently being implemented in Delhi, and projects worth ₹64,000 crore have already been completed. In the coming times, ₹24,000 crore worth of projects for which detailed project reports have been made will be implemented to decongest Delhi and make traffic movement smooth…I want to thank (PM) Narendra Modi and Nitin Gadkari for helping decongest Delhi and make it a pollution-free city,' said Gupta. The upcoming projects include the construction of an approximately 7km-long underground tunnel from Shiv Murti to Nelson Mandela Road; an elevated road from INA to the airport — which will later connect to Faridabad and Gurugram; a highway connecting Delhi to Katra and Amritsar, which will be linked to the Urban Extension Road (UER)-II; and a second extension of UER-II, which will connect Alipur to Tronica City and the Delhi–Dehradun route. These new routes will enable seamless travel between Haryana, Dehradun, and Noida without the need to enter Delhi, officials said. 'A feasibility study is also underway for a tunnel from Sarai Kale Khan to IGI Airport,' CM Gupta said, adding that several key initiatives are being undertaken to decongest Delhi. The CM also gave details on the completed and ongoing projects. The National Highways Authority of India is currently implementing projects in Delhi worth ₹35,000 crore, while projects worth ₹64,000 crore have already been completed, she said.. According to a government report, the major completed road projects include the 135km Eastern Peripheral Expressway ( ₹12,000 crore), Dhaula Kuan–Gurugram corridor ( ₹373 crore), Gurugram–Sohna Road ( ₹2,009 crore), Delhi–Panipat corridor ( ₹2,205 crore), and the 32km Delhi–Dehradun Expressway stretch from Akshardham to EPE junction ( ₹3,500 crore). Several other flagship projects are nearing completion, such as the Delhi–Meerut Expressway (92% work done), Dwarka Expressway (98%), UER-II (95%), and the DND Interchange–Kalindi Kunj–Faridabad–Sohna–Jewar Airport Link Road (93%). Major roads such as Rohtak Road, Punjabi Bagh to Nangloi, Ashram to Badarpur, and MG Road have also been handed over to NHAI, not only for decongestion works but also for the development of proper drainage systems, side lanes, and necessary infrastructure. 'Earlier, such tasks were handled by multiple agencies, leading to issues such waterlogging and unconnected drainage. Now, these problems will be resolved solely by NHAI at its own expense, with support from the Delhi Public Works Department,' said CM Gupta. NHAI has also sanctioned ₹150 crore for construction of RUBs (Road Under Bridges) and ROBs (Road Over Bridges) to eliminate bottlenecks caused by railway crossings. 'A total of ₹1.25 lakh crore worth projects for decongestion projects have been initiated in Delhi by the central government. I want to thank the Centre for supporting Delhi,' said CM Gupta. She further said that all future road projects would maximise the use of inert construction material. This initiative will not only reduce burden on landfill sites but also re-purpose the waste into valuable construction resources, she said.
