Uzbek woman arrested for stealing valuable bags at Delhi airport

NEW DELHI: A 60-year-old Uzbek woman was arrested for stealing three valuable bags from another woman at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport. The accused, identified as Mayramkan Karabasheva Alibaevna, had come to India for business-related activities. A woman alleged that on June 15, she arrived at terminal-3 of IGI Airport from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. After collecting her baggage, she found that three handbags, which she had purchased from Kuala Lumpur, were missing from the luggage conveyor belt. She suspected that the bags had been stolen. During the investigation, police checked the CCTV footage of the airport terminal covering the entire route taken by the complainant, additional commissioner of police (IGI Airport) Usha Rangnani said. CCTV cameras revealed that a woman was deliberately seen picking up the handbags from the luggage conveyor belt and hurriedly exiting the premises in a cab, she said. Investigators traced the cab's registration number and ownership details. The owner confirmed that he had dropped the foreign woman in the Paharganj area. The accused was apprehended by the immigration authorities at the airport. The accused said that she frequently travelled to India for her garment waiting for her luggage at the conveyor belt that day, she noticed three handbags that appeared valuable, she said. So, she picked up the bags and exited the airport premises. All three stolen bags were recovered from a hotel room in Paharganj where one of her relatives was staying.

NEW DELHI: A 23-year-old man was arrested from IGI Airport on Monday for allegedly impersonating a Delhi Police sub-inspector to impress and deceive women, including staffers of the Delhi police. The CISF intercepted the man, identified as Sahil Kumar from Rajasthan's Alwar district, around 3.30 pm during routine profiling. He was wearing a T-shirt with the Delhi Police logo and carrying a forged ID card, Additional Commissioner of Police (IGI Airport) Usha Rangnani said. During questioning, Sahil failed to provide any credible details about his posting. He later admitted he was a student preparing for competitive exams and had no government job. He told police he had impersonated a 2024-batch Delhi Police SI to deceive multiple women, including staffers from the force, and had come to the airport to meet one of them. One Delhi Police staffer confirmed he had contacted her on social media posing as a police officer. Police recovered a fake ID card, forged appointment letter, documents, and a mobile phone with photos of him in uniform. He claimed he created the documents using Photoshop and bought the uniform from Delhi's Camp area, Rangnani said. Further probe is on.

A 23-year-old school dropout posing as a Delhi Police sub-inspector to 'mislead female acquaintances and social circle' was arrested at the Indira Gandhi International Airport on July 7, officers said Wednesday. According to the Delhi Police, the man has been identified as Sahil Kumar, a resident of Alwar in Rajasthan. Usha Rangnani, Additional Commissioner of Police, IGI Airport, said, 'He was impersonating a sub-inspector of Delhi Police using a forged identity card. Subsequently, a fake Delhi Police ID card (marked as PSI), a forged appointment letter, a handbag containing some blank case diaries, a blank page having stamp marks of DPA (Delhi Police Academy), and a mobile phone containing photographs in Delhi Police uniform, were recovered from his possession and seized'. During the investigation, the accused told the police he was a school dropout, and was living with a relative in Rohini, Delhi. When questioned about his presence at IGI Airport, he said came to the airport to meet one of his women acquaintances. 'The accused further confessed that he had fabricated his identity to mislead female acquaintances and social circle, and into believing he had been appointed as a sub-inspector in the Delhi Police. He admitted that he was, in fact, a student preparing for competitive examinations and held no formal employment with any government department. He also disclosed that he had procured a Delhi Police uniform from the Camp area in Delhi, and had created a fake identity card and appointment letter using self-taught skills in Photoshop,' Rangnani added. Upon inquiry, one of the women personnel of the Delhi Police confirmed that the man had contacted her via social media, posing as a 2024-batch sub-inspector posted at IGI Airport. According to the police, the Vigilance Team of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) intercepted and detained a man suspected of impersonating a Delhi Police officer at around 3.30 pm on July 7, during routine surveillance and profiling operations at the departure forecourt of Terminal 3. They said the suspect was wearing a white T-shirt with the emblem of the Delhi Police. When questioned, he was unable to provide a credible explanation for his current posting in the Delhi Police and offered vague and unconvincing excuses. An Air India flight bound for New York was forced to return to Mumbai mid-flight after a bomb threat was found in the aircraft toilets. Flight AI119 was around four hours into its almost 16-hour journey from India to the US when the 'potential security threat' was discovered on Monday (10 March). A Sahar police official said that one of 322 passengers and crew on board the Boeing 777 aircraft spotted a note with the message 'there is a bomb in the flight' in the bathroom, reported The New Indian Express. According to data from Flightradar24, the flight departed Mumbai International Airport for New York's JFK at around 2am local time before turning around in the airspace above Azerbaijan. Security agencies found the threat to be a hoax following 'mandatory checks' upon the flight's safe landing in Mumbai at 10.25am. The flight has been rescheduled to depart at 5am tomorrow (11 March), with the airline offering affected passengers overnight accommodation and meals on Monday. A spokesperson for Air India said: 'A potential security threat was detected mid-flight on AI119 operating Mumbai-New York (JFK) today, 10 March 2025. After following the necessary protocols, the flight air-returned to Mumbai, in the interest of the safety and security of all on board.' It added: 'Our colleagues on the ground are making sure to minimise the inconvenience caused to our passengers by this disruption.
