Road safety signs to be taught in schools: Minister
Coimbatore: School education minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi said a circular will be issued to all schools in the state mandating to educate students on road safety signs and rules during the morning assembly sessions.
"Like listening to the explanation of a Thirukkural, or a proverb, or current affairs/general knowledge, the students will listen to the explanation of a road safety sign. Explanation of signboards will be made a part of morning assembly sessions in schools," he said after launching the Students' Workbook and Faculty Guide for Uyir Kutty Cops Road Safety Curriculum for the academic year 2025-26 in the city on Thursday.
Nearly 812 teachers from both private and govt schools were trained on the faculty guide provided in the road safety curriculum.
The workbook on road safety will be issued to 3 lakh students in 2,000 schools of Coimbatore from classes 4 to 8.
Dr Rajasekaran, managing trustee, UYIR, an NGO, recommended bringing Road Safety Education under the school curriculum.
He said, "About 1,85,000 fatal road accidents occur every year across the country.
