Time of India12-06-2025
Coimbatore: School education minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi said a circular will be issued to all schools in the state mandating to educate students on road safety signs and rules during the morning assembly sessions.
"Like listening to the explanation of a Thirukkural, or a proverb, or current affairs/general knowledge, the students will listen to the explanation of a road safety sign. Explanation of signboards will be made a part of morning assembly sessions in schools," he said after launching the Students' Workbook and Faculty Guide for Uyir Kutty Cops Road Safety Curriculum for the academic year 2025-26 in the city on Thursday.
Nearly 812 teachers from both private and govt schools were trained on the faculty guide provided in the road safety curriculum.
The workbook on road safety will be issued to 3 lakh students in 2,000 schools of Coimbatore from classes 4 to 8.
Dr Rajasekaran, managing trustee, UYIR, an NGO, recommended bringing Road Safety Education under the school curriculum.
He said, "About 1,85,000 fatal road accidents occur every year across the country.

Three months after repair, two lanes of Butibori flyover remain closed

1 2 Nagpur: Nearly three months after the Butibori flyover was reopened to traffic following a major repair work, two of its six lanes continue to remain closed. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has barricaded the outermost lanes on either side of the structure, citing safety precautions. However, the presence of an uneven joint where the repair work was carried out — combined with the prolonged closure of two lanes — has added to the concerns of motorists who use the flyover daily. The flyover, built at a cost of Rs70 crore, was inaugurated in June 2021 to ease congestion at one of the most accident-prone junctions near Nagpur, which had recorded over 100 fatalities in the past. On December 24 last year, an overloaded over-dimensional vehicle (ODC) passed dangerously close to the edge of the flyover on the Nagpur-Wardha side, causing a part of one of its span to cave in. Following the incident, NHAI closed the flyover for nearly five months, leading to heavy traffic jam on the road beneath. Experts from Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT) were roped in for a detailed structural review after which the repair work was carried out. The flyover was reopened in May this year, though with restrictions — two outermost lanes on either side remained barricaded. A senior NHAI official said the flyover is safe despite the visible unevenness. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo "The repair work was carried out after a report from experts at VNIT. It is completely safe, but the joint cannot return to its original place," the official said. On closure of the two outermost lanes, the officer said it is a precautionary move. "We have approached VNIT, which will advise us on measures to stop heavy and over-dimensional vehicles from running on the edge of the flyover. Once VNIT suggests measures, we will start the work. Later, light vehicles like cars and bikes will be allowed on the outermost lanes, but heavy vehicles will be strictly prohibited. We are expecting suggestions from VNIT next week," he said. With only four of the six lanes in use, traffic congestion is common, especially during peak hours when trucks and passenger vehicles crowd the busy stretch. For many locals, the uneven joint at the repaired patch, along with the barricaded lanes, has raised doubts about the long-term durability of the flyover. Safari vehicles in R'bore granted 1-year extension

1 2 Jaipur: Forest department has granted a one-year extension to safari vehicles in Ranthambhore Tiger Reserve. According to the order, the field director must ensure that vehicles permitted for safaris are safe, suitable for tourism, and meet prescribed safari standards before allowing the extension. Officials said the model validity of these vehicles will expire in 2026, after which they will not be permitted for tourism operations. However, following requests from associations and the absence of practical alternatives, a temporary extension was provided. "Tourists prefer Gypsies due to their manoeuvrability and suitability for rugged terrain. With the extension, Gypsies will continue for one safari season starting Oct 1," an official said. Currently, 556 vehicles are registered for tourism at Ranthambhore, including 269 Gypsies and 287 Canters. The Ranthambhore Vehicle Safari Owners' Union earlier submitted a memorandum to the forest department seeking an extension. The challenge, however, lies in the fact that Gypsy manufacturing was discontinued in 2016. While diesel vehicles are available in the market, their higher emissions make them unsuitable for protected areas. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Officials said a petrol-based model was expected to emerge as an alternative, as petrol vehicles typically cause less pollution and are considered more compatible with eco-sensitive tourism. But no viable petrol option was developed, leaving both the department and safari operators without a substitute. Forest officials noted that a similar directive was earlier issued for replacing old Canters with newer models. Implementation was delayed due to the ongoing tourist season, but an extension was provided. With several companies offering Canters with improved technology and lower emissions, the department directed that alternatives be explored. Officials admit that unless a suitable petrol or eco-friendly vehicle is identified, both forest department and safari operators may face uncertainty when the validity of Gypsies ends in 2026.
