Olorato Mongale: Suspect's parents arrested for aiding escape in murder case

Police arrested a suspect's parents for tipping him off to evade capture in connection with Olorato Mongale's murder. The mother and father of one of the suspects linked to Olorato Mongale's death are in custody for allegedly tipping off their son that the police are looking for him. The South African Police Service (Saps) provided an update to the murder case of the 30-year-old student on Thursday evening. The police announced on social media that they had taken into custody the parents of one of the suspects, who is currently on the run. Mongale murder suspect's parents in custody 'The father is the owner of the VW Polo, while the mother is believed to have tipped off the son that police are at the parents' house looking for him,' Saps said. The mother's actions allowed their son to evade arrest on Wednesday evening, the police said. When officers arrived in Inanda, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), where the suspect stayed, he had already left. The development comes as investigators have made significant breakthroughs in KZN. Vehicle used in crime recovered They recovered the car allegedly used in the crime and arrested an elderly man believed to be connected to the case. The police had already processed two of the three suspects in the system before connecting them to Mongale's death. Mathe revealed that the police arrested Bongani Mthimkhulu and Phila Makhanya last on 20 April, on charges of kidnapping and robbery in the Brockbunny area. ALSO READ: Olorato Mongale: Family reels as only child is violently ripped from her mother The officer discovered the suspects had just kidnapped and robbed a woman, using the same VW Polo that would later become central to the Mongale murder investigation. Both suspects appeared in court on 22 April, secured bail on 26 April, and remained free while police began linking them to additional crimes. Since authorities released contact information for Brigadier Nama, who is handling the case, the public has responded in large numbers. Suspects' criminal history 'Since issuing this number, hundreds of ladies are calling. A lot of women are calling and giving out information on how they met, particularly Bongani Mthimkhulu and Phila Makhanya, on several occasions,' she said. Mathe encouraged more women to come forward with information about their experiences with the suspects. The grim discovery was made by a shepherd in Mangaung. Police are investigating a case of murder after the body of an unknown male was discovered burning in the bushes in the Free State. The grim discovery was made by a shepherd in Mangaung, Phase 6, near Dewetsdorp Road on Tuesday, just before 9am. Burning body Police spokesperson Sergeant Mahlomola Kareli said when officers arrived on scene, they found the 'smouldering remains' of a male, estimated to be around 35 years old. 'The victim was reportedly wearing blue jeans and black takkies. No form of identification was found at the scene. 'The motive for the killing and the circumstances surrounding the incident are currently being investigated, and police are appealing to the public for assistance in identifying the deceased,' Kareli said. Kareli is urging anyone with information that could assist in identifying the victim, or who has any knowledge regarding this incident, to contact their nearest police station or call the national Crime Stop line at 08600 10111. 'All information will be treated with the strictest confidentiality,' he said. 'Her body was found in less than two hours at around 4:50 pm in Lombardy West on Sunday afternoon by the Saps with the assistance of community members. 'Gauteng police are investigating the possibility that 'John' was with another male suspect when they allegedly murdered Olorato,' Mathe said. Other cases Mathe added that Gauteng police are also investigating a similar case after a 39-year-old woman was also found dumped in Catherine Street in Sandown, Sandton on 8 May 2025. 'Just last week, police pounced on a man who was targeting women on Facebook using a fake profile and identity. The 24-year-old man is still in custody and has already appeared before the Bolobedu Magistrates court on a charge of kidnapping and rape. 'He had lured a 28-year-old female to Limpopo under false pretences and raped her repeatedly. She was later rescued by police at a filling station in Giyani,' Mathe said. GBV Mathe stressed that while police investigating teams are on the ground in the Mongale case and several other GBV cases, 'we are urging women to be extra vigilant and look out for the VW Polo'. 'Women are also urged to always report their whereabouts to friends and family when meeting new friends or going out on dates. Avoid meeting strangers in secluded areas and only in public spaces'. Update: Car parts, suspected to belong to the VW Polo of police Constables, found National police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe has confirmed that vehicle parts including a front and rear vehicle bumper have been found. They were discovered by the search and rescue teams working to find the VW Polo the three Constables were traveling in. Constable Keamogetswe Buys (30), Constable Boipelo Senoge and Constable Cebekhulu Linda (24) went missing on April 23 on their way to Limpopo from Bloemfontein. Also read: Five bodies pulled from Hennops River near Midrand Their bodies, together with two other people, were found six days later at the Hennops River in Centurion. On April 30, Mathe said experts are trying to establish if these vehicle parts are linked to the VW polo that the three police officers were travelling in. 'A police reflector jacket belonging to one of the deceased police officers has also been found. SAPS divers, City of Tshwane divers and EMS, SAPS Special Task Force (STF) divers, Search and Rescue South Africa,have located a metal object that they suspect may be the missing vehicle. This metal object was felt by divers 4km from the N1,' said Mathe. Authorities hope to establish whether the Constables were involved in an accident or what might have transpired. Mathe added that there is no confirmation as yet as this metal object is covered by debris. SAPS Crime Intelligence, the cyber crime unit, detectives, Lyttleton Community Police Forum (CPF) Traffic, fidelity secure fire, vision tactical private security are also forming part of this operation. Mathe concluded that all three families of the Constables have been notified of the latest developments.
