Free State police probe murder after burning body found in bush
The grim discovery was made by a shepherd in Mangaung.
Police are investigating a case of murder after the body of an unknown male was discovered burning in the bushes in the Free State.
The grim discovery was made by a shepherd in Mangaung, Phase 6, near Dewetsdorp Road on Tuesday, just before 9am.
Burning body
Police spokesperson Sergeant Mahlomola Kareli said when officers arrived on scene, they found the 'smouldering remains' of a male, estimated to be around 35 years old.
'The victim was reportedly wearing blue jeans and black takkies. No form of identification was found at the scene.
'The motive for the killing and the circumstances surrounding the incident are currently being investigated, and police are appealing to the public for assistance in identifying the deceased,' Kareli said.
Kareli is urging anyone with information that could assist in identifying the victim, or who has any knowledge regarding this incident, to contact their nearest police station or call the national Crime Stop line at 08600 10111.
'All information will be treated with the strictest confidentiality,' he said.

Woman killer
Meanwhile, Gauteng police are searching for a man who uses the name John (pseudonym), believed to be linked to the murder of a 30-year-old Johannesburg woman.
According to police, Olorato Mongale was last seen on Sunday went she went on a date with her 'alleged killer' who picked her up from her residential complex driving a white VW polo with cloned number plate that belongs to a Toyota Hilux.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said during investigations it emerged that the vehicle is fitted with fake registration number plates.
Body discovered
Mathe said some of Mongale's belongings, including a phone and a handbag, were found on 9th Road in Kew, Johannesburg.
'Her body was found in less than two hours at around 4.50pm in Lombardy West on Sunday afternoon by the police with the assistance of community members,' Mathe said.

Image: Marshall Security Meanwhile, a suspect was arrested for possessing a stolen Toyota Cross in uMhlanga on Friday. Powell said that at approximately 7.15pm, the SOT received intelligence about a suspicious silver Toyota Cross circulating in the Gateway precinct. The SOT, Durban North SAPS and Excellerate Security members were deployed to find the vehicle. Officers observed a silver Toyota Cross on Twilight Drive at 9.15pm. Subsequently, they performed a safe stop of the vehicle on Twilight Road. 'A check of the registration plates showed they were registered to an SAPS provincial vehicle, yet the driver could not provide any police credentials,' Powell said. 'Durban North SAPS officers conducted a VIN scan that confirmed the car is positively listed in a Sydenham theft-of-motor-vehicle case opened on May 4, 2025, identifying it as a stolen Toyota Cross.' Colonel Robert Netshiunda, spokesperson for the KwaZulu-Natal police, confirmed the arrest of a 23-year-old man found in possession of a suspected stolen vehicle. The vehicle was reportedly stolen on Theresa Road in Sydenham on May 4, 2025. 'He appeared in the Durban Magistrate's Court on June 9, 2025,' Netshiunda said.

Mashatile's VIP protectors' occurrence report doesn't mention assault
One of the officers from Deputy President Paul Mashatile's protection team told the VIP incident management officer that a speeding VW Polo driver was trying to get close to the main car the day the VIP officers allegedly assaulted a motorist. Sgt Goodwill Rikhotso, an incident management officer at the VIP police unit, revealed this at the Randburg magistrate's court on Tuesday. He testified in the case of the eight VIP protection unit officers from Mashatile's protection team who allegedly assaulted a motorist on the N1 highway in Johannesburg in July 2023. Rikhotso, who writes accident and incident reports in the VIP unit, testified that one of the accused officers, W/O Phineas Boshielo, reported to him about the July 2 2023 incident. However, the incident report didn't mention anything about an assault incident. 'W/O Boshielo reported that at about 16:00 bravo convoy were run on the N1 north road from Soweto when a blue Polo driving behind the convoy, trying to get close to the main car,' Rikhotso read from the report he compiled during the examination in chief. The state led the evidence of Rikhotso, who testified that they were speaking in Tswana when Boshielo called him, and there was no miscommunication between them. 'They first backup shielded the main car against driver of the Polo. They ordered the driver to reduce speed but instead he continue to race with the convoy and they end up forcing him out the road,' Rikhotso read the report. Rikhotso testified that Boshielo reported that: 'They stopped him [driver] and inside the Polo there were three males and one female, smashed on the windows trying to run away but the first backup managed to catch them and they searched them and the vehicle as well but they did not find any weapons in the vehicle. 'Later the first backup joined the convoy, and Capt Lepota was informed about the incident.' Shadrack Kojoana, Johannes Mampuru, Pomso Mofokeng, Harmans Ramokhonami, Phineas Boshielo, Churchill Mkhize, Lesibana Rambau and Moses Tshidada face 12 counts, including assault, malicious damage to property, pointing of a firearm, contravening the Road Traffic Act, reckless and negligent driving and attempting to defeat the ends of justice. The case was adjourned to Wednesday for the defence lawyer, Mswazi Makhubele, to consult the accused before cross-examining Rikhotso.
