Sanitation worker falls into manhole, dies
Tuticorin: A 40-year-old disabled sanitation worker died after falling into a manhole on Sunday when he attempted to clear a sewage block in an underground drain at Tiruchendur in Tuticorin. Sources said he did not have any safety gear on while carrying out the work, and may have inhaled toxic fumes in the drain. Several contract workers of Tiruchendur municipality were engaged in clearing blocks in the drainage in the morning, ahead of the Vaikasi Visakam festival at the Murugan temple, which attracts thousands of devotees. Police said P Sudalaimani of Gangaikondan in Tirunelveli, a disabled man, was among the workers attending to a complaint of near Tiruchendur Govt Hospital. As he was trying to clear the blockage, he accidentally fell into a manhole and landed inside the drain. Though other workers tried to lift him, they were unable to reach him in time. Fire and rescue services department and police arrived and pulled him out. An unconscious Sudalaimani was taken to the GH, where doctors declared him brought dead. He is suspected to have died after inhaling toxic fumes. The body of the deceased was sent for post-mortem examination. Tiruchendur taluk police registered a case and were investigating further.

Police prepare for Vaikasi Visakam fest in Madurai
Madurai: City police has announced various traffic arrangements in view of the Vaikasi Visakam festival to be held at the Arulmigu Subramania Swamy temple in Thiruparankundram on Monday. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now A statement said a large number of devotees will come to the Thiruparankundram Murugan temple on Monday. Vehicles going from Thirunagar to Madurai are prohibited from entering the Girivala path and Thiruparankundram overbridge. Vehicles of devotees are allowed to be parked only in permitted parking areas such as the ground near the Park bus stop and Thiruparankundram Teppakulam paid parking space, and two-wheelers are allowed to only single park from the Thiruparankundram arch to Okkalikkar Mandapam. Meanwhile, vehicles are prohibited from entering from Thiruparankundram Mayil Mandapam to Thiruparankundram Sannathi Street as well as the four temple car streets. Vehicles of devotees from Avaniyapuram can be parked in permitted parking spaces near Saravana Poigai. Police urged devotees who will be carrying milk pots, 'kavadi' and performing 'alagu' piercing to make use of separate arrangements for them from Thiruparankundram 16 Kal Mandapam. Arrangements for drinking water and first aid have been made at various points.

Tiruchendur temple gears up for Vaikasi Visakam festival on June 9
The Vaikasi Visakam festival is set to take place on June 9 (Monday) at the Tiruchendur Subramanya Swamy temple. In anticipation of the event, a large number of devotees have begun arriving on foot pilgrimage. The temple administration has announced that a special queue has been arranged exclusively for these pilgrims. As part of the festival, the temple will open at 1 a.m. followed by Viswaroopa Deeparadhana at 1:30 a.m. and other pujas and rituals throughout the day. On the Vaikasi Visakam day, lord Jayanthinathar will appear in Shanmugavilasa Mandapam at 7 p.m. and bless the sages by removing their curses. Devotees from across Tamil Nadu and other states are expected to visit the temple for the festival. A significant number of pilgrims have already started arriving by foot. For the devotees arriving by foot through the Thoothukudi route, the temple administration has arranged to issue identification wristbands near Arumuganeri DCW bus stop, starting from June 8 (Sunday), 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Tuesday (June 10). People wearing this wristband will be allowed to have darshan of the deity through a special queue. The festival arrangements are being closely monitored by the temple administration.

Thoothukudi collector reviews arrangements for Tiruchendur temple consecration ceremony
The consecration ceremony of Tiruchendur Subramanya Swamy temple is scheduled to take place on July 7. In view of this a preparatory meeting to discuss the necessary arrangements was held at Thoothukudi district collectorate, presided over by the District Collector K. Elambahavath. During the meeting the collector stated that the yagasalai puja related to consecration ceremony would begin on July 1 and on the day of consecration ceremony over 10-lakh people are expected to gather for the festival. He directed the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board (TWAD) to ensure uninterrupted supply of at least five lakh litres of drinking water daily throughout the festival period. He emphasised the importance of providing safe drinking water, setting up temporary toilets and parking areas under the Tiruchendur Municipality. He insisted on evicting the stray dogs and cattle from the temple premises and the municipality was also directed to ensure regular garbage clearance throughout the town. Mr. Elambahavath directed the highway officials to expedite the repair of Tiruchendur-Thoothukudi road and internal roads in the Tiruchendur town. Additionally, drainage connections blockages should be cleared and uninterrupted power supply ensured. A medical team must be stationed within the temple premises with 24x7 ambulance service and emergency treatment facilities. The police department was instructed to ensure adequate security arrangements to prevent overcrowding and to regulate the movement of devotees for smooth darshan. The Vaikasi Visakam festival at Tiruchendur is scheduled for June 9. Since this event also draws lakhs of devotees, the District Collector advised the officials to make necessary arrangements to accommodate the visiting devotees during this festival as well.

Three get one-year jail for casteist abuse during temple festival in Tenkasi
TENKASI: The Principal District Court in Tenkasi sentenced three men belonging to the dominant castes to one year of imprisonment for verbally abusing two Schedule Caste (SC) residents. The convicts - K Saravanakumar, V Subramanian, and R Senthurpandi - used casteist slurs against the victims, Vivek Kumar and Kalidass, both from the SC community in Sangupuram village near Vasudevanallur, during the Kaliamman Temple's Vaikasi Visakam festival in 2015. According to the prosecution, the incident occurred when the two SC men offered prayers in front of the temple car as part of the ritual. The accused objected to their presence, hurled caste-based insults, and stated that individuals from their community had no right to stand before the chariot and worship the deity. Based on the complaint of a 'nattamai' of scheduled caste community, the Vasudevanallur police booked the trio under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Additionally, the court imposed a fine of Rs 1,000 on each of them. Special Public Prosecutor S Marikutty appeared for the victims.
