India's First Vande Bharat Sleeper Train: Check Launch Date And Route
While the first Vande Bharat Sleeper may run on Delhi-Mumbai or Delhi-Kolkata routes, Bihar polls could see it operate between Delhi and Howrah, connecting Bihar Passengers across India are eagerly awaiting the launch of the India's first Vande Bharat Sleeper Express, a premium train that promises greater comfort than the Rajdhani Express and higher speeds, significantly reducing travel time. Indian Railways has already started preparations, and unlike the initial Vande Bharat prototypes, this will be a newly built train with an updated design. The Vande Bharat Express has already won hearts nationwide, prompting the Ministry of Railways to expand its fleet rapidly. Currently, 75 Vande Bharat trains, offering 150 services, operate across the country, but all are chair-car configurations, which can be uncomfortable for long-distance journeys. The upcoming Sleeper Vande Bharat aims to fill this gap. Although the prototype was built and trialled earlier, deficiencies were identified during testing. Keeping passenger convenience in mind, the design has been refined, and the new train is now almost ready to roll out. According to the Railway Ministry, the Sleeper Vande Bharat will be introduced before the Bihar Assembly elections. With elections expected in November, the train could be operational by October. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has also emphasised expediting the launch. While the first service is planned for either the Delhi–Mumbai or Delhi–Kolkata route, strong indications suggest it will run between Delhi and Howrah to connect Bihar in time for the elections. At present, all 75 Vande Bharat trains are chair-car models, which require passengers to remain seated for the entire journey. For long-distance routes, this can be inconvenient, and the Sleeper Vande Bharat will address that by offering overnight travel in greater comfort. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The MP met the minister in New Delhi on Wednesday and said that the upcoming Vande Bharat sleeper variant, set to be launched in Sept 2025, marks yet another milestone in providing world-class rail travel to the common citizen. The Mangaluru and Bengaluru line is one of the most important intra-state corridors in Karnataka, connecting the coastal city of Mangaluru with the state capital. The route sees consistently high passenger demand from students, working professionals, tourists, and traders alike. Currently, only a handful of overnight trains serve the busy route, and they are often fully booked well in advance. A Vande Bharat sleeper service would offer faster, safer, and more comfortable overnight travel, significantly improving connectivity and passenger experience, he said. He appealed to the minister to include the Mangaluru-Bengaluru route among the priority corridors for the Vande Bharat sleeper express and direct the concerned officials to explore the operational and technical feasibility of the same. The number of Vande Bharat trains running in the country has increased to 51. Along with this, the facilities available in them also attract passengers. Like any other train in the Railways, Vande Bharat Express will also have a sleeper version. However, there is a wait time as full-scale production is yet to begin at the Marathwada Rail Coach Factory in Latur. Advertisement === When will the sleeper rakes be ready? Advertisement === What features will the sleeper variant have? The Vande Bharat Sleeper Express will consist of 16 coaches and is built for speeds up to 160 km/h. It will have a passenger capacity of 823, with each coach fitted with three toilets and a compact pantry to enhance passenger comfort. What will be the cost? The estimated cost of manufacturing one sleeper rake stands at Rs 120 crore. How Vande Bharat started? The Indian Railways network is one of the most extensive rail networks in the world. Although the Indian Railways already had high-speed premium trains like Rajdhani and Shatabdi Express, the need for a semi-high speed train was felt to provide modern facilities and high-speed experience to the passengers. In such a situation, in the year 2017, the Railways planned to develop semi-high-speed trains. For this, instead of signing an agreement with a foreign company, emphasis was laid on indigenous technology and the responsibility was given to Chennai-based Integral Coach Factory (ICF).
