Govt to pursue cases of Goans detained in US, says Sawant
Porvorim: Several Goans have been detained in the US over visa issues, and state govt must provide assistance to them at the earliest, Benaulim MLA Venzy Viegas said on Monday in the assembly. CM Pramod Sawant said any Goan families with members stuck in the US over visa issues should contact govt, and the issue would be pursued with Centre at the earliest. 'When cases come to the notice of the NRI commission and my office, we will help by following up with the embassy concerned,' said Sawant. Viegas said it is a grave situation concerning a number of individuals from India, including Goa, who were arrested and detained in jails and immigration detention centres in the US. These arrests are due to expired visas or lack of valid documentation.

Protect comunidade land, AAP tells Pillai
Panaji: Representatives of several comunidades, led by AAP legislators Venzy Viegas and Cruz Silva, met outgoing governor P S Sreedharan Pillai to ask him to convince govt to withdraw the bill that seeks to legalise encroachments. The comunidade representative said that regularising illegal structures in the state will trigger widespread encroachments. 'Please do not legalise these structures because this will open the floodgates for unending encroachments in Goa. We have started a six-day campaign to save comunidades where we will spend two days in each of the comunidade zones,' said attorney of the Assagao comunidade, Nelson Fernandes, after meeting the governor. Pillai informed the delegation that since a new governor has been appointed for Goa, the issue was out of his hands. 'How can govt bring in a law to legalise what was illegally built on someone else's land? People are building homes, flats, and structures on comunidade land without asking the comunidades. If that is the case, then we should all build structures on govt land or other people's land as this law will benefit us. Whatever they are going to do in assembly is going to be bad in law,' said Viegas. Viegas also wrote to the governor requesting early sanction of Rs 1 lakh each for over 17 museums in Goa, as discussed during the governor's visit to Goa Chitra Museum in June.

No alliance at the top, but Congress, AAP discuss strategy ahead of Goa assembly session
Even though Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal has announced that there would be no alliance with the Congress, local leaders of the two parties have come together to coordinate the opposition's strategy ahead of the monsoon session of the Goa assembly. The session will be held from July 21 to August 8. Congress and AAP MLAs attended a meeting called by Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao on July 15, while the leaders of other opposition parties including the Goa Forward Party and Revolutionary Goans Party remained absent. "I convened a meeting with the opposition MLAs, including AAP MLAs Venzy Viegas and Cruz Silva, and Congress's Carlos Alvares Ferreira and Altone D'Costa," Mr. Alemao said in a statement. The purpose was to draw up the opposition's strategy, he said. "The discussion was productive, with valuable inputs from MLAs Venzy Viegas, Carlos, Altone and Cruz on how to hold the BJP government accountable," said Mr. Alemao who belongs to the Congress. "We are united in our determination to protect Goa from the corrupt BJP government's clutches," he added. Congress MLAs have submitted over 750 Legislative Assembly Questions (LAQs) for the session, Mr. Alemao said. AAP Goa president Amit Palekar said to attend the meeting was the decision of the legislative wing of his party. The AAP and Congress have decided to demand accountability from the BJP government on the floor of the House, he said, adding that a collective strategy was decided for the sake of the people of Goa. In a joint statement issued on Tuesday (July 15, 2025), AAP MLAs Viegas and Silva said, "United we stand for Goa's justice. For meaningful change in the assembly, AAP and opposition parties must align their political and legislative wings. Common political discipline and collective action should happen."
