Sky Sports: Erik ten Hag now poised to seal Man United reunion after igniting fresh transfer pursuit of ‘leader'
Erik ten Hag is set to reunite with one former Manchester United star as he prepares for his first campaign as Bayer Leverkusen boss. It's safe to say the Dutchman has big boots to fill after being chosen to succeed invincible Bundesliga-winning manager Xabi Alonso this summer, who departed the BayArena for Real Madrid back in May. Ten Hag had been out of work since being relieved of his duties by INEOS in October last year; the board opted to cut ties following a dismal start to the campaign and he left the club 14th-placed in the Premier League, having won only three of their opening nine matches, as well as 21st in the Europa League standings. Leverkusen finished runners-up behind Bayern Munich — who were restored to their usual perch atop the table — last season, meaning Ten Hag will have Champions League football to navigate throughout 2025/2026. The side has had to bid farewell to a handful of influential stars, with Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong making the move to Liverpool, Granit Xhaka signing for Sunderland and Jonathan Tah joining rivals Bayern. To replace the latter, a senior centre-half, Ten Hag has set his sights on a familiar face to bolster his ranks: Victor Lindelof. What next for Lindelof? Lindelof's eight-year stay at Old Trafford came to an end upon the culmination of his contract in June, with United opting against offering him fresh terms and instead allowing him to leave as a free agent. He has yet to make a decision on where he'll ply his trade next, having spent the best part of his senior career with the Reds and Benfica. As confirmed by Sky Sports' Florian Plettenberg this morning, the 31-year-old is now being targeted by Leverkusen for his 'experience' and 'leadership qualities'. Leverkusen eye move for ex-Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof
Bayer Leverkusen have set their sights on free agent Victor Lindelof to bolster their defence (h/t journalist Florian Plettenberg). Newly appointed manager Erik ten Hag has been overseeing a major rebuild this summer. He looks to sustain Leverkusen's upward trajectory in the new season despite losing several influential figures. Leverkusen have sold defenders Jonathan Tah and Odilon Kossounou to Bayern Munich and Atalanta respectively, but have acquired Jarell Quansah from Newcastle United. Ten Hag is eyeing more central defenders for his project and is considering the possibility of reuniting with Lindelof, with whom the Dutch manager worked at Manchester United. The Swedish centre-back parted ways with the Red Devils when his contract expired in June. It concluded his seven-year spell at Old Trafford, during which he featured in 285 games. Lindelof was also part of the United squad that won the FA Cup in 2023/24 under Ten Hag. Leverkusen appreciate the Swede's wealth of experience and leadership qualities, but they are yet to initiate concrete talks with him. Aston Villa, West Ham, Fiorentina and some of the Serie A clubs have been linked with Lindelof, but none have come forward with any encouraging offers. Lindelof has been plagued with a series of injuries over the last few years, which curtailed his progress, but he can rejuvenate his career at Leverkusen if he remains fully fit. Although he is not considered a long-term option, the Swede can be crucial to their Champions League ambitions in the upcoming season. Die Werkself are working in parallel on a deal to sign Sevilla centre-back Loic Bade. He is rated at around €25 million.

Four free agents yet to find new clubs this summer
It's been over a a month since this summer's free agents came out of contact, but several are yet to find new homes. We've looked at five former Premier League players who remain free agents as we enter August. Four free agents yet to find new clubs this summer Takehiro Tomiyasu Arsenal announced that month that the club had reached a mutual agreement with Takehiro Tomiyasu to end his contract with immediate effect. The Japan international impressed after his arrival from Bologna in 2021 but has been plagued by fitness problems in recent seasons. Tomiyasu featured for just six minutes in the Premier League last season and has started just 16 league games over the last three campaigns. The defender is expected to be out until October but could prove an attractive option for sides in search of depth on a budget. Though his injury record is a huge concern, Tomiyasu's age (26) and ability to operate right across the backline appeals. Dominic Calvert-Lewin Dominic Calvert-Lewin called time on his Everton career last month, after nine seasons at Goodison Park. The forward is another who has suffered with injury problems, failing to rediscover the form that saw him break into the England squad between 2020 and 2021. He scored just three league goals last season, though remains a brilliant aerial option for sides focused on a more direct approach. At 28, he will feel there's plenty left in the tank. Victor Lindelof Victor Lindelof is available on a free transfer after eight seasons at Manchester United. The Sweden international has departed the Red Devils after 284 appearances in all competitions. The 31-year-old's future remains clear despite transfer talks, as sides consider swooping to sign the experienced defender. Josh Brownhill Burnley have lost a pivotal part of their promotion-winning side after Josh Brownhill opted against signing a new contract at Turf Moor. The 29-year-old scored 18 goals and added six assists from midfield last season, with only Leeds United striker Joel Piroe outscoring Brownhill in the Championship. Leicester City are understood to have offered the midfielder a contract, as the Foxes rebuild after relegation from the Premier League last season. Ex-Man Utd star 'pushes' current team to sign player released by Ruben Amorim
Victor Lindelof was released by Manchester United at the end of the 2024-25 season and will now be looking for his next club - with Fiorentina a possible option as ex-team-mate David de Gea pushes for the move Former Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea is attempting to bring Victor Lindelof to Serie A side Fiorentina following his release from Old Trafford, reports claim. Defender Lindelof was released by United boss Ruben Amorim at the end of last season following eight seasons with the club. He still managed 25 appearances in all competitions for the Red Devils last season but only started six times in the Premier League, signalling the end of his time in Manchester. Lindelof proved to be a valuable member of the United squad during his spell as he made 284 appearances and won two trophies. The 30-year-old will now be looking ahead to his next chapter after becoming a free agent and Fiorentina have become an option for him. According to Corriere dello Sport, Lindelof's former United team-mate is "pushing" to bring the centre-back to the Viola. The pair spent six years together at United and De Gea's involvement in the deal comes after he himself revitalised his career after joining the club - playing 42 times for the team and making some fabulous saves. The report says Fiorentina are ready to offer Lindelof a contract at the club, knowing he can be snapped up for free. It adds that the club feel the Sweden star would offer "valuable experience" as well as back-up following the exits of Matias Moreno and Nicolas Valentini. Should Lindelof join the club, he will be playing in the UEFA Conference League after the club finished sixth in Serie A last season. Along with De Gea, Lindelof would also be playing alongside former Manchester City forward Edin Dzeko and ex-Everton star Moises Kean. Lindelof was one of three senior players who were released by Manchester United at the end of the campaign, including Christian Eriksen and Jonny Evans.
