Tesco shoppers divided over 'sweet sandwich' in meal deal dubbed 'abomination'

The sandwich left one shopper feeling like she was "doing a Bushtucker Trial" We all love a sweet treat and a sugary pick-me-up in the afternoon, but one major supermarket has left shoppers totally divided over its newest addition to the popular meal deal selection - with one calling it an "abomination". ‌ Tesco has unveiled the Birthday Cake Sandwich, which some have called "delicious," while others have questioned who on earth is responsible for dreaming it up. In any case, it is certainly perfect for marking a special occasion. ‌ At £3, the sandwich consists of "sweet brioche-style bread with cream cheese icing and delicious strawberry jam", as stated on its own packaging. It can be combined with a snack and beverage as part of the current meal deal offer. ‌ "Get it while you can," the wrapper states. "Enjoy the sweet brioche-style bread with cream cheese icing and delicious strawberry jam. An all-time favourite treat in an all-time favourite deal." Bella Hill, a content creator, shared news of the product after discovering it at her local Tesco branch on Monday, August 4. Bella uploaded a TikTok featuring the dessert-inspired sandwich, with her initial reaction being that the concoction looked like "colourful coleslaw". ‌ Before eating it, she revealed she "felt like she was doing a Bushtucker Trial". She dramatically told her followers: "I would rather eat a bug than eat that." After taking a bite, Bella let the flavours sink in before revealing: "The after-taste is like Victoria Sponge Cake. If you like icing and strawberry jam, you're going to absolutely love that. The bread is delicious." ‌ Bella rated her experience a 6/10, and the comments poured in within an hour. ‌ Shoppers were swift to draw comparisons between this fresh Tesco offering containing 31g of sugar and the internet sensation that was M&S's strawberries and cream-filled sandwich. The Red Diamond Strawberry and Creme sandwich was priced at £2.80, launched around Wimbledon time in June 2025, and dominated social media. But M&S soon became the butt of the joke after Aldi - once again - re-launched their supermarket feud. The budget retailer is known for its witty social media banter, especially at the expense of M&S, and following the Colin Vs Cuthbert caterpillar cake debacle, Aldi took aim at the strawberry and cream sandwich. ‌ Aldi responded to M&S's new creation by 'launching' their own spoof sando, mocking their rival's posh version. The German supermarket's version features carrots and cream on a soft sweetened loaf. However, not everyone was impressed with Tesco's attempt, with one person on another platform complaining: "This is getting ridiculous now!" Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Another critic expressed their dismay, writing: "Jeez they will put anything between a couple of slices of bread these days! Just because you can doesn't mean you should!" Tesco offers its meal deal for £3.60 with a Clubcard or £4 without. Tesco states that this price is for the standard meal deal, which includes a choice of a sandwich (now featuring cake), wrap, pasta, or salad, plus a snack and a drink. The Birthday Cake Sandwich is being promoted as a limited edition item, meaning it won't be on the shelves indefinitely. Those curious to sample it should check out the supermarket's grab-and-go section.

Home Bargains item sparks debate as people either 'love it or hate it'

People were in two minds about the item that's common at most birthday parties - but others backed it as a tasty bargain Home Bargains shoppers have been divided over an item on shop shelves that has been branded "cheap and nasty", while others say it is "moreish" and "surprisingly nice." A handful were still processing the news that one of the nation's favourite bargain shops even sold the item to begin with. ‌ Most birthday celebrations require a cake, but even a supermarket version can end up costing more than £10, depending on what you opt for. But, if you're only feeding a small crowd, this Home Bargains offer might be ideal. ‌ Posting on the official Snack Reviews Facebook group, lead member Daniel Chubb wrote: "Looks like I'm having a birthday today. And tomorrow. And probably Wednesday too. Victoria Sponge Cake £3.99 at Home Bargains." ‌ In the photos, the shopper showed off a brightly decorated birthday cake from Comerfords Family Bakery with cream, chocolate, and sprinkles and layers of raspberry jam for just £3.99. The cake doesn't give a serving size on the packaging, but it appears to be big enough to make about eight slices—ideal for small parties and gatherings. People were divided on Facebook after the post went online. Some were clueless that Home Bargains even sold cakes, others loved and a few were unconvinced. One said: "It's surprisingly nice, my toddler decided her daddy was going to have it for his birthday so I had to buy it!" ‌ Another added: "Am I the only one who didn't know Home Bargains even sold cakes?" A third wrote: "It's really nice. I thought it would be c***, but I loved it and have bought it a few times since." Someone else put: "I've had this cake and it's really moreish!" A fifth person claimed: "That looks foul. It's so easy to make [one] fresh!" A Home Bargains shopper added: "Tasted like shaving foam!" And, one more said: "Cakes are something I don't mess with. The cheap ones are never good!" The discount retailer might be known for its Star Buys, discount home goods, and sweet snacks, but some people are grabbing items from the everyday food section. Some Home Bargains stores have their own bakery section, as well as frozen and fresh food on offer. ‌ In other Home Bargains news, shoppers have been raving about the latest "girly range" of items featuring the trendy pink bow pattern. From bedroom and bathroom to kitchen goods, shoppers had a whole new range to check out, starting from £1.49. Also, in one of the latest Star buy offers, shoppers who frequently visit the discount store may have noticed a £35 set that's 'ideal for travel' is now on offer for just £8. Parents off on holiday—or just for days out in the UK—have been grabbing this Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature Portable Travel Baby Bottle & Food Warmer.

Raffles The Palm Dubai launches 'royal' afternoon tea

Raffles The Palm Dubai has unveiled an all-new afternoon tea experience, 'The Grand Palaces Afternoon Tea', set within the opulent surroundings of the lobby's grand Blüthner Hall. Guests are invited to embark on an immersive journey through the culinary splendours of Europe's royal palaces, from England and France to Austria and beyond, where each bite is inspired by the taste of the sophisticated flavours and grandeur traditions that once graced the tables of monarchs. Taking place daily from 2pm to 6pm at AED395 per couple, each course, crafted by Executive Pastry Chef Samith James, is a nod to the rich traditions and sophisticated tastes that defined the lives of kings and queens. Elevating this experience is the meticulous thought and care infused into every detail. Guests are welcomed with a bespoke gold accented hand-written letter by Chef James, as he narrates the culinary journey they will embark on, accompanied by a regal scroll featuring sketches of each palace and its pastry, which takes guests through a visual journey of European grandeur. Starting with the quintessential British ritual inspired by the grandeur of Buckingham Palace, guests will savour delicate flavours of cucumber sandwiches and the timeless Victoria Sponge Cake, a favourite of Queen Victoria herself. The journey continues to the opulent Palace of Versailles, where visitors are treated to the palatial flavours inspired by Marie Antoinette's lavish lifestyle, embodied in the exquisite Orange Blossom Macaroon. Further into this culinary voyage, the experience captures the essence of Vienna's renowned Schönbrunn Palace with the legendary Sacher Torte, a decadent chocolate cake layered with apricot jam, an ode to the city's rich culinary history. The comforting warmth of Belgium's Royal Palace is also celebrated with a modern take on the beloved Speculoos Cake, a delightful blend of spiced biscuits and rich chocolate, embodying the warmth of traditional Belgian confectionery. Each element of the menu serves as a tribute to the storied history and cultural richness of the historical palaces. The honey-drenched Medovnik Cake pays homage to the Czech Republic's regal traditions, offering layers of honey-infused sponge and creamy filling, while the Kyiv Cake showcases the artistic legacy of Ukraine's Mariyinski Palace with its delicate sponge and meringue layers.
