Detroit Tigers' Matt Vierling re-injures right shoulder; Wenceel Pérez activated

Matt Vierling is still injured. The Detroit Tigers placed Vierling, an outfielder/third baseman who recently returned from a right shoulder injury, on the injured list Tuesday, May 27, with right shoulder inflammation. The 28-year-old had been active for just four days between stints on the injured list, playing in four games. Advertisement There wasn't an event that caused Vierling's right shoulder to become an issue again. "We put him on the injured list, which should tell you we don't think he can play," manager A.J. Hinch said before Tuesday's game against the San Francisco Giants at Comerica Park. "We'll have more information as we get more tests, and more doctors need to weigh in." The 25-year-old suffered the lower back injury in late March during the final Grapefruit League game in spring training. "We should not steal any joy away from getting Wenceel back," Hinch said. "This guy is so fun to be around. He's energetic, big smile, bounces around the clubhouse." Detroit Tigers outfielder Wenceel Pérez poses for a photo during picture day of spring training at TigerTown in Lakeland, Fla. on Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2025. Meanwhile, Vierling had been sidelined since Feb. 23 — the second game of spring training — with a strained rotator cuff muscle in his right shoulder. He spent three months recovering and rehabbing before the Tigers activated him Friday, May 23, against the Cleveland Guardians at Comerica Park. Advertisement Four days later, Vierling landed on the injured list again. It's the same shoulder. "There wasn't a singular event or an episode or anything," Hinch said. "He came in and complained of some shoulder soreness. We sent him for tests. He saw some doctors. We're going to need to get further testing, but we can't mess with this coming off the most recent shoulder issue that he's had." This story will be updated. The Detroit Tigers have been the feel-good story of the MLB season, rising from a sub-.500 team less that a year ago, to a playoff team that went to Game 5 of the American League Division Series, then to the best record in the AL after Memorial Day this season. But even as the Tigers are making their fans feel good, a long list of their players have been feeling bad. Detroit has been beset with injuries since spring training, and the team is still waiting on the return of at least eight players — including $15 million offseason free agent pitching acquisition Alex Cobb. DETROIT, MICHIGAN - SEPTEMBER 27: Matt Vierling #8 of the Detroit Tigers looks on against the Chicago White Sox at Comerica Park on September 27, 2024 in Detroit, outfield has been hit especially hard by the injury buzzsaw. Until last Friday, Parker Meadows, Wenceel Pérez and Matt Vierling all had yet to play a single game, after combining for 168 appearances in center field alone last season. The Tigers got what manager A.J. Hinch called a "big upgrade" to the outfield on Friday, however, when Vierling — who has been dealing with a strained rotator cuff muscle — was finally activated from the injured list. More MLB: MLB's Best Team Gets 'Big Upgrade'; Tigers Outfielder Activated For Season Debut The bad news for Detroit is, on Tuesday Vierling went right back on the IL. The reason, according to a report by The Detroit News, was that after Monday's game at home against the San Francisco Giants, the 28-year-old, five-year veteran reported a recurrence of the soreness in his right shoulder. "There wasn't a singular event or episode or anything. He came in after the game and reported some shoulder soreness so we sent him for tests, had him see some doctors," Hinch said, as quoted by The Detroit News. "We need to get further testing but we can't mess with this, especially off the recent shoulder issue he had." Vierling, who recorded two hits in the 11 at-bats since his return, was placed on the 10-day IL. But there was no word from the Tigers on how long he was expected to be shelved this time. The day was not without good news for the Tigers, however. Pérez — who was called "a fun, impactful player" by Hinch — was activated after appearing in just six rehab games in the minor leagues. The 24-year-old native of the Dominican Republic brings a high degree of versatility to the Tigers' lineup. He is a switch hitter, and according to Hinch, he will see time at all three outfield positions. More MLB: Tigers Get Good News on Veteran Bullpen Arm, But Option Rookie With 1.42 ERA

MLB's Best Team Gets 'Big Upgrade'; Tigers Outfielder Activated For Season Debut

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. One of the biggest surprises of this season has been the fact that the best team in baseball so far is the Detroit Tigers. Not only did they head into Friday's home game against the Cleveland Guardians at 33-18 -- an MLB-best .647 winning percentage -- the Tigers reached the top of ESPN's power rankings released on Thursday. Detroit started the season at No. 18 in the ESPN rankings, but has vaulted up the chart, winning 15 of its last 21 games. HOUSTON, TEXAS - OCTOBER 02: Matt Vierling #8 of the Detroit Tigers reacts after striking out against the Houston Astros in the first inning during Game Two of the Wild Card Series at Minute Maid Park on October 02, 2024 in Houston, Texas. More"Plenty is going right for the Tigers: the resurgence of Javier Baez ... in center field; Tarik Skubal's sterling defense of his AL Cy Young Award; former No. 1 picks Spencer Torkelson and Casey Mize finding their way; and the bullpen's dominance," wrote the ESPN power rankings staff. "Lost in those headlines is Gleyber Torres having a solid season, continuing where he left off down the stretch in 2024 with the Yankees." And yet, the Tigers have done it all while dealing with a series of injuries that would slow down many teams. Their $15 million free agent pitching acquisition Alex Cobb has yet to take the mound. Centerfielder Parker Meadows has also been out since spring training. Torres missed almost two weeks with an oblique strain. Those names are just a few of the Tigers' walking wounded. But one outfielder (who doubles as a third baseman), Matt Vierling, is finally ready to take his place in the Detroit lineup. After missing the entire season so far with a right rotator cuff strain, the 28-year-old, fifth-year player was finally activated from the injured list on Friday. More MLB: Tigers Trade Idea Gets $3 Million Phillies Outfielder For 1.00 ERA Relief Arm Vierling played an important role in last season's Tigers comeback, getting into the playoffs despite being two games under .500 as late as Aug. 22. With 16 home runs and a .735 OPS, Vierling's 3.0 WAR was second-highest of any position player on last year's Detroit team. Other than 32-year-old veteran Javy Baez, who has converted to a center fielder due to the multiple outfield injuries and has so far produced his best performance at the plate since 2021, the Detroit outfield has been a patchwork product. Vierling and Meadows have missed time with injuries, and Manuel Margot and Wenceel Perez have served IL stints as well. Despite being eligible to play, Vierling was not in the Tigers' starting lineup on Friday. More MLB: Braves Urged to 'Pull Plug' on Yankees Castoff Alex Verdugo as Numbers Plummet

Detroit Tigers OF/3B Matt Vierling returns from injured list; Sean Guenther optioned

At last, Matt Vierling has arrived. The Detroit Tigers activated Vierling — an outfielder/third baseman on the field and a team leader behind the scenes — from the injured list ahead of their Friday, May 23, game against the Cleveland Guardians at Comerica Park. He wasn't in the starting lineup, but he's available as a pinch-hitter off the bench. Advertisement The 28-year-old had been sidelined since Feb. 23 — the second game of spring training — with a strained rotator cuff in his right shoulder. In total, Vierling missed 51 games this season. But now, he's finally back. On May 24, the Tigers are expected to activate right-hander Casey Mize to start, which will lead to the demotion of a position player. Advertisement Vierling has been a mainstay for the Tigers the past two seasons. He had the best results of his four-year MLB career in the 2024 campaign, hitting .257 with 16 home runs, 41 walks and 121 strikeouts in 144 games. He plays all three outfield positions and third base, but he performs best in center field and right field. SHAWN WINDSOR: Playoff heartbreak? He spent five games at designated hitter, three games at third base for 21 innings, two games in right for 13 innings and one game in center for nine innings. Advertisement The Tigers took their time with Vierling's rehab assignment to ensure the rotator cuff strain in his right shoulder wouldn't resurface with throws from different angles. Injured Alex Cobb throws live batting practice; Detroit Tigers activate John Brebbia

The Detroit Tigers practically pulled right-hander Alex Cobb out of retirement by signing him to a one-year, $15 million contract in the offseason, but he still hasn't pitched in a game. He has been injured since early February. Advertisement Cobb took a "step forward" in his recovery from a right hip injury, according to manager A.J. Hinch, when he completed a live batting practice session May 9 at Comerica Park. The 37-year-old threw nearly 30 pitches, with Hinch, president of baseball operations Scott Harris and general manager Jeff Greenberg watching intently from behind home plate. "His stuff has been really, really good," Hinch said after Cobb's session. "He's still working through his recovery to get back, so we just need him to take small steps forward so that we can make an assessment on what's next for him. It was a very productive day." JEFF SEIDEL: I didn't expect to cover Tigers this long in 2025. But I'm sure glad I did Detroit Tigers pitcher Alex Cobb poses for a photo during picture day of spring training at TigerTown in Lakeland, Fla. on Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2025. In the session, Cobb simulated two innings, but in the first inning, he didn't look comfortable while getting off the mound and running to cover first base on a ground ball. Advertisement The good news: Cobb returned to the mound for the second inning. He faced outfielder Matt Vierling and third baseman Jace Jung in live batting practice, with Vierling rehabbing from a right shoulder strain that's sidelined him since late February. Vierling, though, is further ahead than Cobb in his rehab program, already having completed three games on a rehab assignment in Triple-A Toledo. He is hitting .286 (2-for-7) with one home run, four walks and three strikeouts in 11 plate appearances. Celebrate 125 epic seasons with the Tigers! But Vierling still hasn't played the outfield. After Cobb's session, Vierling threw for coaches and trainers in the outfield. He will continue his rehab assignment May 10 with the Mud Hens, possibly in the outfield. Advertisement Vierling must be activated by May 24. [ MUST LISTEN: Make "Days of Roar" your go-to Detroit Tigers podcast, available anywhere you listen to podcasts (Apple, Spotify) ] John Brebbia activated The Tigers reinstated right-handed reliever John Brebbia from the 15-day injured list. The 34-year-old has been sidelined since April 19 with a right triceps strain, missing 20 days. Before the injury, Brebbia allowed one run on three hits and five walks with nine strikeouts across nine innings in eight relief appearances. He walked two batters apiece in his final two outings. Brebbia completed two games on rehab assignment with Triple-A Toledo. Advertisement BÁEZ'S SECRET? Here's how Javy is on pace for best season since 2019 To create room on the roster, the Tigers optioned outfielder Brewer Hicklen, who recorded the first hit of his MLB career May 8 against the Colorado Rockies. Hicklen spent just one day on the team. What A.J. Hinch says Entering May 9, the Tigers are tied with the Los Angles Dodgers for MLB's best record, at 25-13. The Tigers also lead all teams with a plus-83 run differential. Here's what Hinch said about those facts: "In perspective, it's great for where we're at right now, and I'm very proud of how we're playing. It's just that our challenge is not about best record or not best record, or leading this or leading that. Two things can happen at the same time — I can be very proud of how we've gotten here and what we've done, but also uber-focused on our next series. I've preached that to you guys. I've preached that to our players. I preach it all the time because that's who I am and how I operate. I'm really happy with our guys and what we're putting into the preparation to get the results that we're getting. But it's not a daily check for me. It's part of a long season of the grind. The only way I know how to prepare is to get our guys focused. When you're getting those answers from them, it's my fault. All they're going to talk about is the next series because that's all they hear from me, but I'm very proud of our players and our organization, and the various people who are here, but also a bunch of guys who have popped up for a day or two or filled in when needed."
