Skubal twirls gem and Vierling lifts Tigers over Rangers 2-1 to stop 6-game slide
Vierling's base hit up the middle off Chris Martin (1-6) scored Gleyber Torres after the Rangers finally got something going against Tigers ace Tarik Skubal in the seventh.
Skubal, the reigning AL Cy Young Award winner and starter in last Tuesday's All-Star Game, was cruising with a two-hit shutout going into the seventh. He left with runners at the corners and two outs, and Adolis García scored on a wild pitch by Tyler Holton (5-3).
Will Vest entered in the eighth and got four straight outs for his 16th save.
Skubal struck out 11 and walked none on 105 pitches in his seventh double-digit strikeout game this season.
Zach McKinstry singled home Wenceel Pérez in the second for Detroit's first run.
Texas left-hander Jacob Latz allowed six hits and two walks over five innings in his third start this year and the fourth of his 72 big league appearances. Latz pitched in place of Nathan Eovaldi, who reported back tightness Saturday.
Corey Seager, the lone left-handed batter in the starting lineup against the left-handed Skubal, had the first two hits off him. Seager extended his on-base streak to 21 games, the longest active run in the American League.

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — All offseason, Tyreek Hill has heard the clip of himself frustratingly declaring 'I'm out' on the Miami Dolphins after last season's disappointing finish. The Dolphins star receiver doesn't feel that way anymore. He regrets making those comments. And he said among his goals this season is to reveal a version of himself — a more subdued, mature one — that he hasn't shown yet in his career. 'I literally heard that all offseason some kind of way on YouTube shorts because my kids stay on YouTube.' Hill said Tuesday as Dolphins veterans reported to training camp. 'And I'm like, 'I don't want to put that out there for my boys to see.' Last season's outburst that included taking himself out in the second half of Miami's regular-season finale against the New York Jets was an example of antics the All-Pro receiver said can't continue to happen. He has since had talks with teammates and coach Mike McDaniel on how to be more of a leader moving forward, especially as he hopes to help the Dolphins deliver the playoff win that has eluded them for more than two decades. 'That's why this year, this whole entire offseason, I've been busting my tail,' Hill said. 'I told my dad, I said, 'I want to see what it looks like whenever I focus just on football, and I just focus on myself and family. Because I feel like I really haven't been giving the best version of me, of Tyreek, my whole entire career. … I just want to see what that version of myself looks like. I'm looking forward to it.' Hill is coming off one of his worst seasons as a pro in 2024. He finished with 81 catches for 959 yards and six touchdowns — his fewest receptions and yards since an injury-filled 2019 season when he played for Kansas City, and a steep drop-off from his NFL-leading 2023 season in which he caught 119 passes for 1,799 yards and 13 touchdowns. He said he's finding motivation for the upcoming season in a few places, such as family. 'My kids are Justin Jefferson fanatics,' Hill quipped. 'They really enjoy Justin Jefferson a lot. I was talking to my son on FaceTime last night, and his mom told me 'One of the kids came up to him and was like, 'You're Tyreek Hill's son?'' And he was like, 'No, Justin Jefferson's my dad.'' WNBA set to quickly tip off second half of season after short All-Star break
NEW YORK (AP) — The WNBA tips off the second half of its season on Tuesday night with 10 of the 13 teams playing. One player who won't be competing for the immediate future is Caitlin Clark, who is recovering from a right groin injury she suffered last week. Clark missed Indiana's final game before the All-Star break with an injured right groin and pulled out of Friday night's 3-point contest as well as Saturday's All-Star Game. Clark told reporters on Saturday night that she had been getting treatment during the festivities, which also took place in Indianapolis. While she is improving, Indiana coach Stephanie White said, the Fever intend to be cautious with Clark, who missed 10 games during the first half of the season with three different muscle injuries. Players weren't thrilled having to play so soon after the All-Star break and hope to add more of a break in the next collective bargaining agreement that they are currently negotiating with the league. Atlanta has back-to-back games on Tuesday and Wednesday while New York and many other teams have three games this week. 'It's kind of the health and safety of it all,' New York's Breanna Stewart said. 'Players having time to rest and recover, but also if we want the product in the All-Star Game to be better we have to have time between games like there's no way that you're going to have a super competitive All-Star Game when we play Tuesday.' New York added some reinforcements for the second half of the season, getting a commitment from Emma Meesseman to join the team once she gets her visa. The Liberty also added Stephanie Talbot, who was waived by Golden State, strengthening the Liberty's bench. New York also got back a healthy Jonquel Jones, who missed the last month before the break to recover from a sprained ankle. The defending champion Liberty currently are second in the standings behind Minnesota. Strong ratings The WNBA 3-point contest and skills challenge averaged 1.3 million viewers Friday night, making it the most watched for that event ever. The All-Star Game, which wasn't extremely competitive with Team Collier winning 151-131 over Team Clark, drew an average of 2.2 million viewers Saturday. It was the second most watched All-Star Game, only trailing last year's contest. Power poll rankings Minnesota reclaimed the top spot in the poll from Phoenix after beating the Mercury last week. Phoenix dropped one spot. New York, Atlanta and Seattle were the next three. Indiana was sixth with Las Vegas and Washington following. Golden State, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas and Connecticut rounded out the poll. Player of the week A'ja Wilson of Las Vegas had 37 points and 10 rebounds in the Aces' lone game last week that was a 90-86 victory over Dallas. Other players receiving votes included Stewart and Los Angeles' Dearica Hamby. Game of the week Phoenix at New York, Friday. Rangers' Jacob deGrom looks for another 'effortless' outing vs. A's
(Photo credit: Brett Davis-Imagn Images) The surging Texas Rangers will turn to ace Jacob deGrom on Tuesday when they host the Athletics in the second contest of a three-game series in Arlington, Texas. deGrom (9-2, 2.32 ERA) will start his 19th game of the year on Tuesday against fellow right-hander J.T. Ginn (1-2, 4.91). The Rangers took the first game of the set on Monday, posting a 7-2 win behind a three-run homer by Michael Helman, a solo shot by the newly recalled Josh Jung and a solid start by rookie Jack Leiter. Texas has won six of its past eight games and has captured two straight series over teams that lead their respective divisions. The Athletics have dropped three of their past four games and fell to 3-5 in the first eight contests against the Rangers this season. deGrom skipped pitching in the All-Star Game and was passed over for his normal spot in the Rangers' rotation after the break in order to save his strength for the stretch run. He will pitch on Tuesday with 10 days between starts and is 5-0 over the past eight appearances with three no-decisions, including in his last two outings. deGrom hasn't lost a game since surrendering two runs on five hits in 5 1/3 innings against Toronto at home on May 26. He allowed two runs -- both on solo home runs -- on four hits and a walk with eight strikeouts in a six-inning stint in Houston on July 12. 'The thing about Jacob is it's so effortless,' Texas manager Bruce Bochy said. 'Not a lot of stressful innings. As much as anything with Jacob is that he's just so happy that he feels good. He's back having fun playing the game.' deGrom's no-decision against the Angels on July 7 ended his franchise record of 14 consecutive starts going at least five innings without giving up more than two runs. deGrom is 2-1 with a 3.38 ERA in four lifetime appearances against the Athletics. Two of those starts were this season, producing a win at home on April 29 and a no-decision five nights earlier on the road; he gave up a combined two runs on 10 hits over 11 1/3 innings in that pair of games, striking out 13 while not walking a batter. The A's were dealt a blow on Monday when outfielder Denzel Clarke was sent to the injured list with a right adductor strain that could keep the erstwhile defensive star out for an extended time. 'It's probably going to be a couple of weeks (before Clarke can begin working his way back),' Athletics manager Mark Kotsay said Monday. 'Had this injury not taken place and he'd finished the rest of the season, I was confident that we could have gotten him close to 300 at-bats. We're just hoping that he can get back with us at some point this year and finish off the season.' Ginn is 1-0 with a 5.00 ERA in two career starts against the Rangers. He permitted three runs on six hits in 3 2/3 innings in a no-decision versus Texas on April 24.
