Parliament Monsoon Session: Modi holds meeting with senior ministers

In his customary remarks ahead of the commencement of the Parliament Session, he said, 'This monsoon session is like a 'Vijay Utsav' celebration of victory. The whole world has seen the strength of India's military power. The target set by the Indian Army in Operation Sindoor was achieved 100 per cent. Under Operation Sindoor, the houses of the masters of terrorists were razed to the ground within 22 minutes. The world has been very attracted to this new form of Made in India military power. These days, whenever I meet people of the world, the world's attraction towards the Made in India weapons being made by India is increasing.' Sources said that the meeting, held at Parliament House in the national capital likely discussed and made decisions regarding the ongoing Monsoon Session, which began today. The Prime Minister was apprised about the discussions in the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) and the opposition's insistence on his making a statement in the House according to sources. The PM was also briefed about the opposition's ruckus, particularly their demand for his availability to speak on the issue of 'Operation Sindoor, they said. Meanwhile, earlier today, Congress and other parties of the INDIA bloc identified eight key issues to be raised during the monsoon session of Parliament. These include the Pahalgam terror attack and the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in Bihar. Opposition members had given adjournment notices, which were not accepted. Opposition parties had been raising slogans in the Lok Sabha in support of their demands in the House. The Lok Sabha was first adjourned until 12:00 p.m. and then until 2:00 p.m. '… The Defence Minister is allowed to speak in the House, but Opposition members, including me, who is the LoP, are not allowed to speak…This is a new approach… The convention states that if people from the government side can speak, then we should also be given space to speak,' Rahul Gandhi told reporters. Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra referred to Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju's remarks that the government is ready for discussion on Operation Sindoor.'If they (the government) are ready for discussion, they should let the Leader of the Opposition speak. He stood up to speak, so he should be allowed to speak,' she said. (ANI) This report is auto-generated from ANI news service. ThePrint holds no responsibility for its content. It's my right as the Leader of the Opposition, but never allowed to speak in the House, says Rahul Gandhi

It was his right as the Leader of the Opposition to speak in the House, but he was not being allowed to speak, while Ministers could make their statements, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said on Monday (July 21, 2025). Mr. Gandhi made these remarks to reporters after the Lok Sabha witnessed an uproar over the Opposition's demand for a discussion on Operation Sindoor, and the Pahalgam terror attack, on the first day of the Monsoon Session. 'The question is that the Defence Minister and their (the BJP) people are allowed to speak, but if someone from the Opposition wants to say something, he is not allowed,' Mr. Gandhi said, adding, 'I am the Leader of the Opposition, it is my right [to speak in Parliament]. I am never allowed to speak.' This was a 'new approach' towards an Opposition leader, Mr. Gandhi said. 'The debate will happen if they allow states that if people from the government say something, we (the Opposition) should also be given space. We wanted to say two words, but the Opposition was not allowed,' he said. When reporters pointed out that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had termed the Monsoon Session as 'Vijay Utsav', with the world having seen the capability of the armed forces, Mr. Gandhi said, 'He [Mr. Modi] ran out of the House in a second.'

Dhaka School Jet Crash Kills 19 V.S. Achuthanandan Dies at 101

A devastating Bangladesh Air Force F-7 BGI jet crash struck Milestone School and College in Dhaka's Uttara area, killing at least 19 people—most of them children—and injuring over 70. The crash triggered a massive fire, widespread panic, and a national day of mourning has been declared for July 22. The pilot, Flight Lieutenant Towkir Islam, is in intensive care, and the cause of the crash is under investigation. In India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Monsoon Session of Parliament, calling it a 'Vijay Utsav' to celebrate achievements like Operation Sindoor and advancements in defence and space. However, the session quickly descended into chaos, with the Lok Sabha adjourned due to opposition protests over the Pahalgam terror attack and other issues. Still, the Rajya Sabha passed key bills, including the Bills of Lading Bill, 2025. Veteran CPI(M) leader and former Kerala Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan passed away at 101. A founding member of the party, he was widely respected for his anti-corruption stance and dedication to leftist ideology. Other headlines include the Nimisha Priya crowdfunding controversy and the Supreme Court's continued stay on the release of Udaipur Files. Script & Voiceover: Zeeshan Akhtar Editing: Zeeshan Akhtar

Operation Sindoor to come up for discussion next week in Parliament

The government on Monday agreed to have a discussion on Operation Sindoor in the two Houses of Parliament, and it is likely to take place next week after Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi returns from his visits to the United Kingdom (UK) and Maldives. Modi is scheduled to be in the UK on July 23-24 and in Maldives on July 25-26. Indications that the government was prepared to have a discussion on Operation Sindoor came in the morning in the PM's customary remarks before the start of the session. He described Parliament's monsoon session as a 'Vijay Utsav' and expressed confidence that members of Parliament (MPs) would articulate this sentiment in one voice. 'This monsoon session is a very proud session for the country. It is like a 'Vijay Utsav' (celebration of victory) for the nation. The world witnessed the capability of armed forces. They achieved their targets 100 per cent,' the PM said in a reference to Operation Sindoor. Alluding to astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla becoming the first Indian to set foot on the facility, the PM said the Indian flag was recently unfurled at the International Space Station. He also spoke of the 'shrinking footprint of Naxalism' and that the red zone was turning into a green-growth zone, which, he said, was evidence that the Constitution was prevailing over bombs and guns. Modi spoke of the bountiful monsoon helping economic activities. He said water reservoir levels had trebled in the past 10 years, which would benefit the economy. The PM said prior to 2014, India grappled with double-digit inflation. 'Today, with inflation rates hovering around 2 per cent, citizens are experiencing relief and improved ease of living. Low inflation, coupled with high growth, reflects a strong and steady development journey,' he said. Parties in the INDIA bloc have demanded the PM address Parliament on Operation Sindoor and also clarify American President Donald Trump's claims that he got India and Pakistan to end hostilities. In his pre-session remarks Modi lauded the multiparty delegations, which comprised MPs from different parties, which visited various parts of the world to convey India's position post-Operation Sindoor. Later in the day, at a meeting of the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) of the Lok Sabha, government representatives noted the PM was going abroad this week, and a debate on Operation Sindoor would take place when he was present in the House next week. Some Opposition members also called for a debate on the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in Bihar and the situation in Manipur. With the impasse continuing, the Lower House was adjourned for the day as protesting Opposition members disrupted proceedings. Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi criticised the government for not including the Opposition's demand for a discussion on the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor in this week's agenda.

Opposition Wants PM Modi To Lead Op Sindoor Debate, But Here's Why Govt Prefers Rajnath Singh

The precedent was set during the Galwan Valley clashes on the Indo-China border in 2020 when Defence Minister Rajnath Singh addressed Parliament The opposition wants Prime Minister Narendra Modi to speak on Operation Sindoor in Parliament, but the Centre is insisting that Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will lead the charge as it was a military operation. The precedent was set during the Galwan Valley clashes in 2020 on the Indo-China border when Defence Minister Rajnath Singh addressed Parliament. Similarly, during Operation Sindoor, Modi addressed the nation, but Singh delivered the official statement in Parliament. Last year, after the political upheaval in Bangladesh when former prime minister Sheikh Hasina fled to India, it was Foreign Minister S Jaishankar who briefed both the Houses. In all-party meetings held before each Parliament session, Singh or JP Nadda typically chair them. On Monday, senior ministers met Modi in Parliament and appraised him of the opposition's demand of him making a statement on Operation Sindoor. He will be available in Parliament only next week when he returns from his foreign tour. The opposition has demanded that the Prime Minister should be present at all-party meetings and address Parliament on major issues. The Congress questioned why he was leaving for a four-day foreign tour this week when Parliament is in session and wants to discuss Operation Sindoor. The BJP views this as an attempt by the opposition parties to target Modi on every issue. The government wants to take a clear stand on US President Donald Trump's claims about the 'ceasefire" between India and Pakistan, as the PM did during his 35-minute phone call with Trump last month but is cautious not to affect the upcoming Indo-US trade deal. It is unclear when the discussion on Operation Sindoor will happen – the opposition wants it next week when Modi returns. VIJAY UTSAV, SAYS PM MODI The PM set the tone for the monsoon session on Monday by suggesting that it should be celebrated as a 'Vijay Utsav' given Operation Sindoor's success. The opposition quickly responded. 'Yes, Operation Sindoor was a success and a response to terror activities from Pakistan soil. I was part of the all-party delegations that went abroad. However, you can only celebrate when you have the terrorists who carried out the attack. The closure for the families will come when these terrorists are killed or hanged. We haven't yet found the terrorists…and the true Vijay Utsav will be the day we do that…and also know the lapses," Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi told News18. The BJP has questioned why the opposition believes Trump's claims over the country's PM. Shiv Sena leader and NDA ally Milind Deora told News18 that the 'opposition should have faith in our Prime Minister over other state heads". BJP MP from Gorakhpur, Ravi Kishan said it is a 'victory session" for the government. 'We smashed Pakistan very badly and the world has seen it. I take pride in what my PM says…and I won't comment on what Trump has said," Kishan said. Congress MP Imran Masood said Modi should publicly contradict Trump's claims. 'We want our PM to look strong. We want the government to lay out facts," he said. Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive.
