The Print4 days ago
In his customary remarks ahead of the commencement of the Parliament Session, he said, 'This monsoon session is like a 'Vijay Utsav' celebration of victory. The whole world has seen the strength of India's military power. The target set by the Indian Army in Operation Sindoor was achieved 100 per cent. Under Operation Sindoor, the houses of the masters of terrorists were razed to the ground within 22 minutes. The world has been very attracted to this new form of Made in India military power. These days, whenever I meet people of the world, the world's attraction towards the Made in India weapons being made by India is increasing.'
Sources said that the meeting, held at Parliament House in the national capital likely discussed and made decisions regarding the ongoing Monsoon Session, which began today. The Prime Minister was apprised about the discussions in the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) and the opposition's insistence on his making a statement in the House according to sources. The PM was also briefed about the opposition's ruckus, particularly their demand for his availability to speak on the issue of 'Operation Sindoor, they said.
Meanwhile, earlier today, Congress and other parties of the INDIA bloc identified eight key issues to be raised during the monsoon session of Parliament. These include the Pahalgam terror attack and the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in Bihar. Opposition members had given adjournment notices, which were not accepted.
Opposition parties had been raising slogans in the Lok Sabha in support of their demands in the House. The Lok Sabha was first adjourned until 12:00 p.m. and then until 2:00 p.m.
'… The Defence Minister is allowed to speak in the House, but Opposition members, including me, who is the LoP, are not allowed to speak…This is a new approach… The convention states that if people from the government side can speak, then we should also be given space to speak,' Rahul Gandhi told reporters.
Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra referred to Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju's remarks that the government is ready for discussion on Operation Sindoor.'If they (the government) are ready for discussion, they should let the Leader of the Opposition speak. He stood up to speak, so he should be allowed to speak,' she said. (ANI)

Bihar hikes journalist pensions to ₹15,000 ahead of assembly polls; CM Nitish Kumar says, ‘khayal rakh rhe'

Ahead of the assembly elections in the state, Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar made a major announcement for journalists. The pension amount being given to accredited journalists in Bihar will be increased from ₹ 6,000 to ₹ 15,000. In a post on X, Nitish Kumar said, 'I am pleased to inform that under the 'Bihar Patrakaar Samman Pension Scheme', instructions have been given to the department to provide a monthly pension of ₹ 15,000 instead of ₹ 6,000 to all eligible journalists.' Additionally, in the event of the death of journalists receiving a pension under the 'Bihar Patrakaar Samman Pension Scheme', instructions have been given to provide their dependent spouse with a monthly pension of ₹ 10,000 instead of ₹ 3,000 for their lifetime, he added. Nitish noted, 'Journalists play a crucial role in democracy. They are the fourth pillar of democracy and have a significant role in social development. We have been taking care of journalists' facilities from the beginning so that they can perform their journalism impartially and live with dignity after retirement.' This comes at a time when the Election Commission's ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls ahead of the Bihar assembly polls has erupted in a massive row in the country, with the opposition INDIA bloc alleging that it will delete a significant chunk of voters. As per the latest data released by the Election Commission of India on July 25, 99.8 per cent of Bihar electors have been covered so far in the Special Intensive Revision exercise. Forms of 7.23 crore electors have been received and digitised; the names of all these electors will be included in the Draft Electoral Roll. The digitisation of forms, along with BLO reports, of the remaining electors will also be completed by August 1, 2025, the poll body stated. The opposition parties have repeatedly called for a discussion in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha regarding the revision exercise, moving adjournment motions every day since the start of the monsoon session and alleging that manipulation of voter rolls is taking place under the guise of the SIR. Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) MP Mahua Maji, Deputy Opposition leader in Lok Sabha Gaurav Gogoi, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MP Manoj Jha, among multiple other leaders, attended the protest. Carrying a banner which read 'SIR-Attack on Democracy,' the MPs stood at Makar Dwar, demanding that the voter list revision be halted. Journalists play a crucial role in democracy. They are the fourth pillar of democracy and have a significant role in social development. Bihar elections are expected to be held later this year, in October or November; however, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has not announced an official date. (With inputs from agencies) Key Takeaways The pension increase reflects the government's acknowledgment of journalists' contributions. The timing of the announcement may be strategic, coinciding with upcoming assembly elections. A monthly pension for dependents of deceased journalists has also been raised, emphasizing long-term support.

PM Modi's 'friendship' with President Trump proving to be hollow: Congress

The Congress on Saturday (July 26, 2025) alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'much-boasted friendship' with U.S. President Donald Trump is now proving to be hollow and cited several overtures the latter recently made to Pakistan. In a post on X, Congress general secretary, communications, Jairam Ramesh, also alleged that Indian diplomacy was failing in the light of the U.S. partnering with Pakistan. 'The abject failure of Indian diplomacy, especially in the past two months, is revealed most tellingly by four facts. These expose the tall claims made by the Prime Minister and his drum-beaters and cheerleaders,' he said in his post. On June 10, 2025, he claimed, Gen Michael Kurilla, the head of the U.S. Central Command, hailed Pakistan as a phenomenal partner of the U.S. in countering terrorism. On June 18, 2025, Mr. Trump held an unprecedented luncheon meeting with Pakistan Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir in the White House, Ramesh noted. 'Two months earlier, Munir's inflammatory, incendiary, and communally provocative remarks had provided the backdrop to the brutal Pahalgam terror attacks on April 22, 2025,' he said. Just yesterday, the Congress leader claimed that U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio met Pakistani Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar and thanked Pakistan for its partnership in countering terrorism and preserving regional stability. 'The PM's clean chit to China on June 19, 2020, has already cost India heavily. His much-boasted friendship with President Trump is now proving to be hollow,' Mr. Ramesh said in his post.
