Engg admission: Soon, four CAPs and seat confirmation by round 3
Mumbai: For admissions to engineering institutions in Maharashtra, state govt plans to conduct four centralised admission process (CAP) rounds, instead of three, and impose a stringent rule for seat confirmation in the first three rounds from this academic year. While a govt resolution (GR) to this effect is yet to be released, state higher and technical education Minister Chandrakant Patil announced the change in the engineering admission process during a media interaction on Thursday. Engineering admissions are likely to commence after MHT-CET results are out by mid-June. These changes will ensure more engineering seats are filled through the centralised admission rounds and to prevent students from blocking seats until the last admission round, said officials. Seats blocked until the end of the centralised rounds are filled at institutional level, thereby denying a fair chance to students with lower merit ranks. In this year's admission process, if students are allotted seats in the college of their first choice in the first round, they will have to secure them. Additionally, according to the new rule, if students are allotted seats in one of their top three choices of colleges in the second round and one of the top six choices in their third round, they will have to secure their seats too, said an official. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Promoções imperdíveis de voos baratos Voos | Anúncios de Pesquisa Saiba Mais Undo Until last year, students were compelled to confirm their admissions only if they got their first preference. "Several students hold on to the seats they get in the initial rounds by using the 'float' option and continue to wait for a betterment chance, thereby blocking the seats until the end of all the rounds. These seats later get converted to management seats, which are filled at the institutional level. Since students continue to block CAP seats, many with lower merit ranks do not get a fair chance in the centralised rounds," said Vinod Mohitkar, director of technical education. He added that the state used to follow this process about a decade ago, which was changed in the later years. In the fourth round, students will have to take any seat that is allotted to them. Institutional rounds are conducted to fill the remaining vacant seats. Patil said they want to bring in more transparency in the admission process and also ensure a majority of seats in colleges are filled through the state's centralised process before going to the institutional round. He added that the changes are similar to the ones introduced for polytechnic admissions a few days ago.

Diploma admissions in state to have four rounds
The Central Admission Process (CAP) for diploma admissions in the state to courses like engineering, hotel management and catering, pharmacy, surface coating technology, etc. will have four rounds instead of three from 2025-26 onwards, according to a government resolution by the Higher and Technical Education Department. According to the new rules, the seats available for rounds rounds II, III and IV will be published on the website. The candidates eligible for these rounds will be allowed to fill in and/or edit the online option form filled in the previous round. Vinod Mohitkar, Maharashtra's Director of Technical Education, said that the changes in rules were brought in to increase the admission numbers for the diploma courses. Previously, candidates who had been allotted a seat other than first preference and had confirmed the seat to the Admission Reporting Centre (ARC), could fill in a fresh form for their seat preference. However, according to the new rules, if a candidate is allotted the seat as per his first three or first six preferences in Round-II or Round-III respectively, the candidate has to accept the seat alloted. The new rules say, '…such allotment shall be auto freezed and the candidate shall accept the allotment so made.' After accepting this seat, that candidate will not be eligible for participation in the subsequent CAP rounds. The new rules specify that if the allotment made in Round-II or Round-III is not from the first three or six respective preferences submitted by candidates, they have the option to accept or not accept the allotted seat. In either case, the candidate will be eligible for participation in the subsequent rounds. No betterment option will be available to candidates after round IV and the allotment made or retained in this round will be the final allotment. However, for 'working professionals', Round-II will be the final allotment and no betterment option available after this round. Like previous years, every stage in the CAP admission process will be conducted with the HD (Home District) and OHD (Other than Home District) tag. If seats remain vacant, then the same stage will be conducted without these tags. Further, the technical education department has also instructed colleges that an information brochure or prospectus of the Institution specifying details like accreditation, status, fee structure, hostels and other facilities, academic, curricular, and co-curricular activities and features has to be published before the commencement of the admission process.
