Anthony Gismondi: White wine is on a roll, especially in France's Rhône Valley
Article content The push to white wines makes much sense to this writer, given the quality of white Rhône wines and the region's appeal globally to wine drinkers. Article content We are experiencing many of the same shifts here in B.C., and with any cooperation from the weather gods, we may be able to duplicate the success the Rhône is experiencing with most of the same grapes. Article content Marsanne, Roussanne, and Viognier are already established here. We only need a lighter, fresher white to complete the mix, giving us another blend option to join our success with Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, and Albarino. Laudun whites are few and far between currently, but other Rhône whites are available in government, private retail, and restaurant locations. Article content Article content We just tasted the '22, which was still fresh, but the '23 jumps from the glass. The blend is Grenache Blanc, Bourboulenc and Roussanne. The result is pears and citrus winding through a floral opening and a mineral wet stone finish. Crisp and light, it is the perfect wine for West Coast seafood. It is listed in B.C. liquor stores and the price is a delight. The palate is equally finely tuned with spice and a balancing bitter note of minerality to offset the light pear, citrus and green fig fruit. Dry, elegant, and ready for spring and summer. Take your pick: scallops, soles, halibut, and sushi. They all work here. This Pinot Gris came out of Washington early morning and was processed at Poplar Grove the same day. The nose is a mix of sweet nectarine and pear with a thread of red apple. The sweetness on the nose is toned down by a fresher palate with some bitter mineral notes that tie it all together in the finish. It is easy to sip and fun to drink on sunny patios all spring and summer. Article content Blue Grouse Estate Reserve Pinot Gris 2023, Cowichan Valley, Vancouver Island Article content B.C. Pinot Gris is emerging from years of fruit salad editions to something far more interesting. On Vancouver Island, that takes me to northern Italy's finest DOCs — tempered by the bitters that come with its wet stone and mineral finish. Wow, what an effort. Island seafood is the match. Complexity and length are the keys to this wine's attractiveness. This Reserve is the way forward.

‘Magical' estate offers 360-degree mountain, river and vineyard views east of Sacramento

Imagine waking up every morning to the sun rising over the Sierra Nevada and the American River, and then unwinding with the sun going down over your own private vineyard and the rolling hills. 'It's absolutely the most magical place I've seen from the Sierra views, the sunrise, (to) the sunsets over the vineyard,' listing agent Andrea Duane of REAL Broker said about an extraordinary estate in the foothills above Sacramento. The home at 2195 Dias Dr. — which sits on nearly 99 acres with unobstructed views in every direction — is on the market for $2.25 million. The estate is the highest priced residential listing in the city of Placerville. If it sells near the asking price, it would be one of the highest sales ever for the town of 11,000 people located 40 miles east of Sacramento. Placerville has only seen five residential MLS sales ever above the $2 million mark, according to Ryan Lundquist, a Sacramento appraiser and housing market expert. The gated home, which has a four-acre hillside vineyard, lies only 3.5 miles from downtown Placerville. Sitting on the top of a ridge, the residence looks down upon Chili Bar, one of California's most popular whitewater stretches, and the old historic flume in the distance. Elenridge Vineyard, the name of the acreage where the estate grows Roussanne, Mourvedre and Viognier grapes, is maintained by a vineyard management company, Duane said. The sales price includes a 50-by-35-foot workshop with vineyard equipment. There are two more acres available for planting grapes, too. 'If you didn't want to take care of vineyard yourself, if you're not a hobby wine maker, you can just have it maintained solely by the vineyard management,' she said. The Spanish villa-style house displays wonderful architecture and custom details, such as colorful imported Spanish tiles, 12-foot vaulted wood-beamed ceilings, oversized windows and sturdy 2x6 frame construction. The open living space flows across 3,800 square feet with four bedrooms and three full bathrooms. 'My favorite room in the house is probably the living room, with the wood-beam ceilings anchored by that fireplace and gorgeous picture windows out to the Sierra and the river,' Duane said. She also pointed out her appreciation for the colorful, imported tiles adorning the risers going up the stairway to the second floor and the steps to the living room. 'As you're going up the staircases, you have all of these unique pieces of tile that have been collected over the years from the '50s and '60s that are thoughtfully inlaid throughout the house (and) bathrooms,' she said. The sellers are the original owners and the only family to have lived in the home, which was built in 1990. The house has an upstairs, primary bedroom and deck that look east toward the expansive mountain range. The ensuite bathroom has a luxurious 6-foot Jacuzzi-type tub. The chef's kitchen is an open concept design and leads into a formal dining room with panoramic windows. The listing suggests the property could be used to host wedding receptions, 'creative retreats,' or exclusive events 'amidst this dreamlike backdrop.' Opening this year in Goochland: A 7 Lady Vineyards tasting room and gourmet provisions shop
7 Lady Vineyards in Goochland is building a tasting room and gourmet provisions shop on the grounds of the massive estate it shares with event venue Dover Hall. Why it matters: It should open later this year and is just a short drive over the Henrico/Goochland line. State of play: Dover Hall owners Chad Hornik and Jeff Ottaviano planted the first seeds for their on-site vineyard in 2018, a year after the duo took over the 38,000-square-foot estate special events venue. 7 Lady's first estate-grown wines — Cabernet Franc and Viognier — were harvested in 2022 and both were honored by the Virginia Governor's Cup annual wine award. A wine club was added last year. The on-site tasting room is the latest development on the 55-acre property, which also includes the Dover Hall wedding and event venue. Zoom in: Construction is slated to begin soon to convert an existing barn into a 3,500-square-foot tasting room, complete with a terrace and in-house gourmet shop, which was first reported by BizSense. The gourmet provisions shop will feature locally-made items like curried chicken salad and homemade jams, plus a selection of meats, cheeses, olives and nuts so folks can make their own charcuterie spread, Ottaviano tells Axios. The items can be taken to-go, plated to enjoy in-house or put together as traveling charcuterie box for folks visiting multiple wineries that day. The tasting room will serve 7 Lady's portfolio of more than two dozen wines, which includes their varietals of Virginia wines, plus their wines made outside of the state, like their Malbec, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon. There are also plans for a 2,000-square-foot pavilion facing the pond on the property, which will get a lighted water fountain, plus fire pits, gazebos and additional seating on the nearby grounds. What's next: 7 Lady Vineyards' tasting room should open by the end of 2025.
