NO MORE PANTING, ONLY PEDALLING
Rajkot: Before the Covid-19 pandemic, even climbing a few steps left them breathless — regular exercise was out of the question. But three years on, these same people are now pedalling across hundreds of kilometres, taking on cycling expeditions with stamina and enthusiasm like never before. Punita Virani, 51, a lecturer at Bhavsinhji Polytechnic Institute, pedals nearly 20 km daily as part of her regular routine. On Sundays, she ups the ante, covering 50 km to 70 km on cycling expeditions. Recently, she cycled nearly 100 km in a single day to the scenic union territory of Diu. Virani's fitness journey began during the Covid-19 pandemic. "I never got myself tested for Covid, but feared I caught the virus from my family members. Doctors noticed I was breathless even after climbing a few stairs and recommended I begin some physical activity," she recalled. Initially, she turned to yoga, but persistent knee pain made it difficult to continue. "That's when I started cycling. Not only did it ease my knee pain, but it soon became my passion," said Virani. Virani rides to and from college and actively encourages colleagues and friends to take up cycling for better health. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Banheiro escorregadio? Even minimal physical activity left him exhausted. Doctors informed Zala, a campus officer at Maharaja Krishnakumarsinhji Bhavnagar University, that the virus impacted his stamina and advised him to begin regular exercise. He took up sports and soon began cycling as part of his routine. "I started with just 10–15 km a day. Gradually, my lung capacity improved, the fatigue reduced, and before I knew it, I was cycling 30 km daily," said Zala. With renewed strength and growing confidence, Zala began undertaking long-distance expeditions — from Bhavnagar to Diu and Lathi in Amreli, and even a 350-km ride from Diu to Okha. He is now aiming to cycle across Gujarat's entire coastal highway from Bhavnagar to Narayan Sarovar in Kutch, spanning 650 km. "There was a time when I couldn't climb the staircase at my college. Recently, I completed the 10,000 steps of Mount Girnar in just four-and-a-half hours," he said with pride. To inspire others, Zala also founded a cycling club that now has over 100 active members, many of whom have made cycling a part of their lifestyle.

Canada election results 2025 live: First polls close on East Coast
Canadians wait to see which candidate will lead their country, and tackle US tariffs and the high cost of living, as the federal election draws to a first closed at 8.30pm Newfoundland Time (23:00 GMT) in the far east of Canada and will continue westward until the last poll ends at 7pm Pacific Time (02:00 GMT).Ahead of the election, polls showed the Liberals leading with nearly 43 percent, above Conservatives at just more than 39 percent, according to a CBC tracker. The New Democratic Party was polling third at about 9 percent, followed by Bloc Quebecois at 6 percent. Update: Date: 9m ago (00:15 GMT) Title: Both sides sounding optimistic Content: Politicians from Canada's Liberal and Conservative parties have been speaking to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC). Liberal MP Arif Virani, from Toronto's Parkdale-High Park riding, said that 'there's a lot of cautious optimism out there' about today's results. Virani, who is not running for re-election, said voters are 'gravitating' towards Liberal leader Carney and his plan to take on Trump,' who Virani said is posing 'an existential challenge' for Canada. Meanwhile, Jason Kenney, the former premier of Alberta and a former Conservative cabinet minister, said that Canadians are looking for change when it comes to 'taking on Trump right now'. 'And that's where Mr Poilievre wanted to steer Canadians,' Kenney said. Update: Date: 24m ago (00:00 GMT) Title: Liberal Party came out on top in Canada's east in 2021 Content: The Liberals will be hoping for a repeat of their 2021 performance in the eastern provinces, where voting has already ended in Canada. The Liberals won a majority of the districts in all four provinces, including a clean sweep of the four ridings in Prince Edward Island. In Newfoundland and Labrador, they took six districts to the Conservatives one, while in Nova Scotia, the Liberals won eight districts, and three went to the Conservatives. In New Brunswick, the results were a little closer, with the Liberals winning six ridings to the Conservatives' four. No other party won any seats in the four provinces. Vote counting has started in these provinces, but it is still much too early to get a clear idea of the final results. Update: Date: 39m ago (23:45 GMT) Title: Who is Pierre Poilievre? Content: As leader of the Conservative Party, Poilievre, a longtime member of Parliament, tapped into popular discontent with Trudeau and the Liberals, hitting them on cost-of-living issues, immigration, and hot-button cultural topics. For a while, it seemed to be working. A moribund Trudeau sank in the polls, and Poilievre looked to be on the edge of a smashing victory, with a mid-January poll finding him ahead by up to 26 points. But that lead has all but evaporated amid doubts that the Conservatives have what it takes to stand up to their counterparts in the US amid an escalating trade war that has angered many Canadians. You can read our profile of Poilievre here. Update: Date: 54m ago (23:30 GMT) Title: Polls close in Atlantic Canada Content: That's the provinces of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. There's still another two hours to go until voting ends in the vastly more populous provinces of Ontario, Quebec and Alberta. Soon after that, we should get a good idea of how well each party has done on a national level. Update: Date: 1h ago (23:15 GMT) Title: Who is Mark Carney? Content: In March, Carney was selected as Trudeau's successor as head of the Liberal Party. While he has pitched himself as a political outsider, Carney, an economist and former central banker, had served as an adviser to the Liberal Party under Trudeau. He hopes that experience will resonate with Canadians who are looking for a leader capable of navigating the troubled waters with the United States, Canada's largest trading partner, amid the threat of heightened tariffs and musings of annexation by President Donald Trump. You can read our profile of Carney here. Update: Date: 1h ago (23:00 GMT) Title: First polls close in Canada Content: And they're in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, in Canada's far-east. We'll get you the first results from the province as soon as they come through. Update: Date: 1h ago (22:55 GMT) Title: Will Liberals complete their months-long reversal of fortune? Content: I'm at the Liberal Party's election night headquarters in Ottawa. In January, you would have expected this to have been a sad place on election night, because the Liberal Party was 25 points behind the Conservative Party in polls. But then came Donald Trump, his tariffs on Canada, and his talk of making Canada the 51st state. Also in January, unpopular Liberal Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced he was going to step down. In March, Mark Carney took over, and since then, the Liberal Party's fortunes have changed dramatically. They're now on the offence, and polls are suggesting that they are likely to win a larger share of the votes – and possibly an outright majority. Update: Date: 1h ago (22:45 GMT) Title: When and where will the results be available? Content: Elections Canada says it expects to count the 'vast majority' of ballots on election night. Each polling place counts its vote on election day by hand after polls close and reports the results to the district's local Elections Canada office, which then posts the results on the Elections Canada website. Results are also released directly to Canadian news organisations. Results from mail voting and ballots cast at special locations, such as military bases and correctional institutions, are also reported on the Elections Canada website and released to the news media, but they may take longer to tabulate. Only preliminary results are available on election night. Vote totals are double-checked in the days following the election, but final, official results typically are not available until about six months after election day, according to Elections Canada. Elections Canada does not declare winners in any district or in the overall contest for prime minister. Canadian media organisations typically announce winners based on their own independent analysis of election results. Update: Date: 1h ago (22:40 GMT) Title: NDP leader hails party's voters Content: With his New Democratic Party (NDP) expecting some losses tonight, Jagmeet Singh sounded upbeat as he spoke to supporters in Port Moody, British Columbia. He said the NDP has successfully pushed for policies that help Canadians over the decades, despite being in the minority, including pushing for dental care coverage. 'Because you vote NDP, we're able to fight for you,' Singh said. 'Because you vote NDP, we're able to lift up people, fight for ordinary folks, not for the billionaires. We're able to stand up to any government that wants to cut the things that you value.' Update: Date: 1h ago (22:37 GMT) Title: What time do polls close? Content: Canadians are voting in six different time zones, with the first results set to begin trickling in soon from Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada's easternmost province. Voting hours are staggered so that the majority of results will be available at approximately the same time nationwide. Here are the opening and closing times for each zone, according to Elections Canada: *In Saskatchewan, which shares two time zones, polls close at 7:30pm.
