Metallica, Virginia Tech light up Richter scale with 'Enter Sandman'
"Exit light. Enter night. Take my hand. We're off to never-never land" is what the Virginia Tech Hokies hear before they take the field for a home game at Lane Stadium. And that tradition was embraced on Wednesday night, as Metallica performed "Enter Sandman," which is played as the Hokies' football team runs out of the tunnel before games, at Lane Stadium. Furthermore, in blasting the iconic heavy metal song, Metallica and the home crowd lit the Richter scale up during the playing of "Enter Sandman." The Wednesday night concert was part of Metallica's M72 World Tour. As for the timeless song, "Enter Sandman" was released by Metallica in 1991, and it ultimately became one of the most played songs at professional sporting events. "Enter Sandman" is arguably most associated with being the walkout song for New York Yankees Hall of Fame closer Mariano Rivera, though fellow Hall of Fame reliever Billy Wagner also came out to the hit song before taking the hill. Furthermore, the horse "Sandman" — who was named after the song — finished seventh in the 151st running of the Kentucky Derby last weekend; Metallica's James Hetfield met "Sandman" in the week leading up to the race. As for the home team, the Hokies are coming off a 6-7 season that saw them go 4-4 in ACC play — good for ninth in the conference. They lost to Minnesota in the Duke's Mayo Bowl. Head coach Brent Pry is entering his fourth season as Virginia Tech's head coach, with the Hokies posting a 16-21 record from 2022-24. Want great stories delivered right to your inbox? Chiefs scouting report: Virginia Tech Hokies WR Jaylin Lane
The Kansas City Chiefs struggled to field a competitive wide receiver room last season. General manager Brett Veach has the opportunity to inject new talent into the offense this offseason. The 2025 NFL draft lacks standout wide receiver prospects, but a few sneaky options offer nice value. Virginia Tech Hokies wide receiver Jaylin Lane is an explosive athlete with elite special teams upside. He amassed more than 1,500 combined kick and punt return yards across his five-year college career. Lane primarily lined up out wide while at Middle Tennessee State but played in the slot once he transferred to Virginia Tech in 2023. Lane bursts off the line and uses his 4.34 40-yard dash speed to stack cornerbacks in man coverage. He overtakes off-man coverage quickly and also separates from defenders on crossing routes. Many of his best downfield targets came against two-high shells that exposed the deep middle of the field. Lane's quick footwork and loose frame help him suddenly decelerate and make sharp cuts at the top of the stem. He flashes the agility and body control to run whip routes and other complex patterns. Lane generates natural separation by breaking down and shaking the cornerback at the top of the stem or simply blowing past his opponent. Lane's true value shows up after the catch. His speed and rare acceleration erase pursuit angles and create chunk plays on schemed touches. Lane is shifty and speedy and uses his experience as a return man to maximize his blockers in space. He combines sidesteps, spins and other jukes to make defenders miss. Jaylin Lane with a crazy tight rope.A 96th percentile athlete at the Combine. — Hayden Winks (@HaydenWinks) March 2, 2025 Lane carries good weight for a 5'9 3/4'' slot receiver, but his play strength creates some limitations against press coverage. He needs to expand his release package and refine his underdeveloped route tree. Lane relied on a heavy diet of schemed touches at Virginia Tech and needs to transition into a more typical slot role at the NFL level. The Chiefs possess enough draft capital to move up and down the board. Having two third round picks makes them flexible if they want to trade pick 95 for several selections on Day 3. That provides a path for the team to pick Lane in the fourth round while securing additional assets. Chiefs scouting report: Virginia Tech Hokies WR Da'Quan Felton
The Kansas City Chiefs drafted plenty of slot receivers in recent years, but the team needs to add some size to its wide receiver room. The 2025 NFL draft primarily features slot options toward the back of the top 100 selections, but a handful of Day 3 prospects possess the height and weight combinations to add another dimension to Kansas City's offense. Senior Bowl Director Jim Nagy lists Virginia Tech Hokies wideout Da'Quan Felton as standing 6'4 1/4" and weighing 216 lbs with 33-inch arms. Despite his size, Felton quickly eats the cornerback's cushion in off-man and threatens defenses vertically. His speed helps him stack cornerbacks out of press coverage. Felton's speed popped more often in 2023 than in 2024, but Virginia Tech's offense deserves plenty of blame for that decline. Felton's frame presents a large target for press corners. He needs to diversify his release package but already uses swipes to clear the corner's hands before accelerating vertically. Felton identifies and sits in holes in zone coverage at the short and intermediate levels. He works back to the football to prevent defenders from undercutting the throw. Felton isn't twitchy and doesn't break many tackle attempts. However, his acceleration and top speed challenge pursuit angles when he catches the ball in stride on slants and crossing routes. Felton's size makes him an effective stalk blocker to contribute in the run game or on wide receiver screens. Felton's lack of dynamic athleticism and inconsistent ability to separate on complex routes limit his ceiling as a prospect. The Chiefs could begin thinking about calling his name in the draft's middle rounds. This article originally appeared on Chiefs Wire: Chiefs scouting report: Virginia Tech Hokies WR Da'Quan Felton
