Delhi HC seeks Yasin Malik's reply in 4 wks on NIA's plea for death penalty

NEW DELHI: Delhi HC Monday asked Kashmiri separatist Yasin Malik to respond within four weeks to a National Investigation Agency plea seeking death penalty for him in a terror funding case. The Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) chief, who previously sought to argue his case against NIA's plea to enhance his life imprisonment to death, was supposed to appear virtually from Tihar Jail, but he wasn't produced. A bench of justices Vivek Chaudhary and Shalinder Kaur noted that Malik also didn't file a reply to the NIA's plea and directed the jail authorities to produce him virtually on the next hearing on Nov 10.

State govt hosp performs PIPAC therapy for abdominal cancer

Raipur: Doctors at the Surgical Oncology Department of state-run Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar Memorial Hospital achieved a significant medical milestone by successfully treating a patient with Peritoneal Carcinomatosis (cancer of the lining of the abdomen) using the Pressurised Intraperitoneal Aerosol Chemotherapy (PIPAC) technique. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The 54-year-old female patient successfully completed three sessions of the therapy, marking the first such instance in any govt hospital in central India, claimed the hospital spokesperson. According to Dr Ashutosh Gupta of the Regional Cancer Institute, PIPAC is a new and advanced technique where chemotherapy drugs are delivered as a fine aerosol mist directly into the abdominal cavity under pressure. This method ensures the medicine targets cancer cells directly, minimising the systemic side effects associated with traditional chemotherapy. The procedure is less invasive, requiring only two small incisions, which provides greater comfort to the patient compared to conventional surgery. This procedure is especially beneficial for patients for whom standard chemotherapy or surgery is no longer effective. Research suggests that 60-80% of patients who undergo PIPAC therapy show improvement. Medical experts note that it is rare for patients to complete more than one session of this therapy due to potential complications arising from inadequate patient selection or post-operative care. However, the patient at Pandit Nehru Memorial Hospital completed all three sessions and is now in a stable condition, leading a normal life. Dr Vivek Chaudhary, Dean of Pt Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Raipur, said this success is a result of the extensive experience, expertise, and proper use of advanced techniques by the oncological surgery team. He described the department's achievement as a new ray of hope for cancer patients across Chhattisgarh and central India. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Dr Santosh Sonkar, Superintendent of Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar Hospital, said the successful completion of three PIPAC sessions for advanced abdominal cancer highlights the institution's capabilities. He said it also offers hope to other patients with this type of cancer and establishes the hospital as a leading medical institution in central India. Key facts about the treatment include that PIPAC involves delivering chemotherapy drugs as a fine mist into the peritoneal cavity. This method is used for advanced cancer patients for whom conventional surgery or chemotherapy is not viable. It has been found to be useful in advanced abdominal cancers such as colon, ovarian, and peritoneal metastasis. The technique is an advanced, research-based method available only at a limited number of specialised centres. In India, this procedure was initially started at a few private and advanced govt institutions such as AIIMS Delhi and Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai. The successful completion of this procedure by this state govt hospital is a notable achievement, according to the hospital spokesperson.

Unable to represent constituency due to court rider: Engineer Rashid to HC

Appearing before a bench of Justices Vivek Chaudhary and Anup Jairam Bhambhani, Rashid sought the modification of an order passed by a coordinate bench Press Trust of India New Delhi Jammu and Kashmir MP Engineer Rashid, accused in alleged terror funding case, on Wednesday informed the Delhi High Court that he was unable to represent his constituency owing to a rider imposed on him to pay daily costs to attend the parliamentary session. Appearing before a bench of Justices Vivek Chaudhary and Anup Jairam Bhambhani, Rashid sought the modification of an order passed by a coordinate bench. The order directed him to deposit Rs 4 lakh with the prison authorities as travel expenses for attending Parliament. During the hearing, the bench remarked that when custody parole is granted, it is ordinarily at the cost of the person. At this, senior advocate N Hariharan, appearing for Rashid said the condition was unreasonable because "he (Rashid) is an elected representative of the people of a parliamentary constituency and unable to represent them due to inability to pay the same". Hariharan continued, "If the condition imposed is such that he is unable to go (to the parliament), we are interfering with the basic elements of democracy in this country." He claimed when Rashid took the oath, "the state never asked for expenses". "These are conditions imposed to somehow see to it that the voice of my constituency is not heard there," the senior lawyer added. The counsel pointed out he was not seeking a review of the order but "only the modification of the conditions". "The order is he be taken into custody, subject to conditions. I am saying the condition is erroneous amounting to defeating the order itself," he said. The bench posted the matter for August 12. The Baramulla MP, who defeated Omar Abdullah in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, is facing trial in a terror funding case with allegations that he funded separatists and terror groups in Jammu and Kashmir. He has been lodged in Delhi's Tihar Jail since 2019 after the NIA arrested him in the 2017 terror-funding case. He was granted interim bail for one month in September last year to campaign in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly election. The NIA's FIR alleged Rashid's name cropped up during the interrogation of businessman and co-accused Zahoor Watali. Synopsis Engineer Rashid, a Jammu and Kashmir MP accused in a terror funding case, has approached the Delhi High Court, citing his inability to represent his constituency due to a condition requiring him to pay daily costs for attending Parliament. HC seeks NIA reply on Rashid's plea against terror charges

. NEW DELHI: Delhi high court Thursday sought NIA 's reply on Baramulla MP Abdul Rashid Sheikh's plea challenging the framing of charges against him in a terror funding case.A bench of justices Vivek Chaudhary and Shalinder Kaur also called for the trial court record in the matter and listed the plea for hearing on Oct 6. The hearing on Rashid's plea challenging a trial court order that asked him to bear travel expenses of Rs 1.44 lakh a day for attending Parliament session in custody between July 24 and Aug 4 is also pending. Sheikh has also sought regular bail, arguing he has already spent over five years in custody and the delayed trial is unlikely to be concluded soon. "Due to his passionate engagement in mainstream politics, he became a potential target for those who preached separatist ideologies, including militant outfits, labelling him as a traitor," the plea submitted. "A mere political comment on the hanging of Afzal Guru or criticising a judgment of courts cannot be construed to mean an association with terrorists," it submitted.
