Allure Magazine Launches Philippines Edition

Allure, the Condé Nast-owned beauty publication, is expanding its global footprint with the launch of a Philippines edition, marking the brand's second foray into Asia following its Korean edition. The magazine, which released its first issue today, is published through a licensing agreement with Mega Global Licensing Inc., a Manila-based firm that also licenses Vogue Philippines. The new edition will be led by Rissa Mananquil Trillo, a beauty industry veteran and the founder of Filipina-focused skincare brand Happy Skin, who was appointed editor-in-chief in November 2024. Mananquil Trillo hopes to leverage the legacy title to redefine what 'beauty looks like for Filipinos today — giving space to our own stories, our skin tones, our rituals, and our identities,' she said in a statement to The Business of Beauty. 'We're here to raise the standard, challenge the narrative, and make sure the world sees the richness of Filipino beauty — because we've always belonged on the global stage,' Mananquil Trillo added. The inaugural issue, out today, features actress Heart Evangelista alongside social media personality Bretman Rock. Its cover story, titled The Morena Manual, explores evolving Filipino beauty ideals, focusing on melanated skin. Recurring sections include The Beauty Brief, for makeup service; Meet the Expert, spotlighting industry professionals; A Balanced Life, covering wellness and mental health; and Beyond Beauty, which will explore sociocultural issues such as lookism discrimination in the workplace. The edition will publish three issues annually, with content distributed across its website and Instagram. Allure's entrance into the Philippines aligns with Condé Nast's broader push to tap into high-growth emerging markets. With a young population, increasing GDP, and a thriving digital landscape, the Philippines represents a key opportunity in Southeast Asia's expanding beauty and media economy.

Filipina teenager Alexandra Eala's dream run at Miami Open ends with narrow defeat to Jessica Pegula

Filipina teenager Alexandra Eala's fairytale run at this year's Miami Open has come to an end after the 19-year-old lost to US star Jessica Pegula in the semifinals on Thursday. Eala had made history with a string of impressive results at the tournament, where she beat grand slam champions such as Iga Świątek, Jelena Ostapenko and Madison Keys. The current world No. 140 had hopes of reaching her first WTA final but saw that dream dashed by world No. 4 Pegula, with the American winning in three tight sets – 7-6 (3), 5-7, 6-3. Despite losing, Eala wore a beaming smile on her face before walking off the court, with the crowd applauding her for a memorable run. 'To have a week like this, the stars need to align and they did this week, and hopefully I can keep that up, that is my goal now, to keep this up,' Eala said, per BBC Sport. Eala has been one of tennis' most exciting prospects for some time, winning the US Open girls' singles title in 2022 and the girls' doubles titles at the 2021 French Open and 2020 Australian Open. Her 2022 victory vaulted her to stardom back home and led to her gracing the cover of Vogue Philippines soon after. Three years on and it seems Eala has finally found her feet on the senior tour. Her dream run in Miami saw her became the first Filipina to reach a WTA semifinal and she will also become the first Filipina to break into the world's top 100 after reaching the final four. 'She's really good. She's a really good tennis player, goes for her shots, takes the ball early, competes really well, she's beaten a lot of top players this week,' Pegula said after winning the match. 'I don't think she needs me to tell her that she's a great player, that we're not going to see enough of her. We definitely are, and she proved that tonight.' Pegula will now face world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in the Miami Open final. Sabalenka booked her ticket in straight sets – 6-2, 6-2 – against Jasmina Paolini in the other semifinal on Thursday. Despite all the success in her career, Sabalenka has never reached the final of the Miami Open but was grateful for elements of her game clicking during an impressive semifinal performance. 'I definitely say that this was one of the best matches in the season so far,' Sabalenka said after a dominant display where she hit 31 winners. 'I don't know. I was just so focused on myself, on the things I had to do today. 'It felt like everything was just, like, going smoothly my way. Yeah, super happy with the performance. I felt like I was in the zone.' The Miami Open final will take place on Saturday at Hard Rock Stadium.

Miami Open: Filipina teenager Alexandra Eala stuns five-time grand slam champion Iga Świątek to reach semifinals

Alexandra Eala continued her stunning run at the Miami Open by beating five-time grand slam champion Iga Świątek in straight sets to reach the first semifinal of her young career. The 19-year-old wild card won 6-2, 7-5 thanks to an accomplished display of power and precision, in particular on her lefty forehand and return of serve. No. 2 seeded Świątek is now the third grand slam champion Eala, the world No. 140, has defeated en route to the last four in Miami, having already taken down Jelena Ostapenko and Madison Keys. Eala has continued making Philippines tennis history in Miami, becoming the first Filipina to reach a WTA semifinal. She will also become the first Filipina to break into the world's top 100. In beating Ostapenko, Eala recorded her and the Philippines' first win over a top-30 player. Both she – and, as a result, her country – now have three. When Świątek hit her backhand long on match point, Eala turned to face her box with a stunned expression on her face. 'I don't know what to say,' the 19-year-old said in her on-court interview. 'I'm in complete disbelief right now, and I'm on cloud nine.' While this was the first time Eala and Świątek had faced off on the court, it wasn't the first time the pair had met. Eala began training at the Rafael Nadal Academy in Spain when she was 13 years old and, at her graduation ceremony in 2023, Świątek was there as a keynote speaker. When shown a photo of the two of them standing next to Nadal, Eala's disbelief only grew. 'It's so surreal,' she said, per the WTA. 'I feel like I'm the exact same person as I was in that photo. But of course, circumstances have changed! I'm so happy and so blessed to be able to compete with such a player on this stage. 'My coach told me to run, to go for every ball, to take all the opportunities I can because a five-time (grand) slam champion is not going to give you the win.' The teenager has long been one of tennis' most exciting prospects, winning the US Open girls' singles title in 2022 and the girls' doubles titles at the 2021 French Open and 2020 Australian Open. Her 2022 victory vaulted her to stardom back home and led to her gracing the cover of Vogue Philippines soon after. Eala will next face No. 4 seed Jessica Pegula, who battled past a resurgent Emma Raducanu 6-4, 6-7(3), 6-2, as she bids for yet more history. 'We are extremely proud of you, Alex,' fellow lefty and 22-time grand slam singles champion Nadal wrote on X. 'What an incredible tournament! Let's keep dreaming!' In the other semifinal, Aryna Sabalenka will face Jasmine Paolini after the Belarusian world No. 1 extended her unbeaten head-to-head record over Zheng Qinwen to 6-0 with a 6-2, 7-5 win.
