Elderly woman says 8 heartbreaking words after being hit by 'distracted' driver

The elderly woman who was struck by Frienna Rockett, 29, said the collision had left her struggling to leave the house and that she was not in pain "all day, every day" An elderly woman said eight heart-breaking words after she was mowed down by a "distracted" driver. Frienna Rockett, 29, had not been paying attention to the road as she had been trying to locate her sister's home when she broke a red light on St Peter's Road, Crumlin, Dublin, when she ploughed into the 81-tear-old woman, Dublin's Circuit Criminal Court heard. Rockett, from Ballybrack, in County Wexford, and pleaded guilty to one count of careless driving causing serious bodily harm on December 16, 2022. ‌ It was heard she had no previous convictions. The elderly woman suffered a bleed to the brain, multiple fractures to her legs, pelvis and clavicle, as well as a dislocated shoulder. ‌ She went on to spend some time in intensive care as well as in rehabilitation following the collision. In a victim impact statement read out by the prosecution, the victim said the collision had been "devastating" to her mental health. She had been fit and active but now cannot go line dancing, or meet her friends as she struggles to leave home. 'My life is very sad and lonely now,' she said. The woman is now "terrified" to walk close to the road or be around traffic. She also lives in constant pain, making getting around difficult. She added, she could no longer drive or take public transport, now relying on a walking aid and mobility scooter. Speaking about her injuries, the victim said she was in pain "all day, every day." She added: "I'm pretty much helpless. I feel vulnerable all the time and live with a lot of fear." The court heard how Rockett had been driving her Volkswagen Gold at about 12:30pm on the day of the collision when she knocked down the woman. She stayed at the scene and alerted emergency services. ‌ She tested negative for intoxicating substances and her paperwork and insurance was in order, the court heard. When questioned by police, Rocket said she had been driving "at a snail's pace" and that the woman "came out from nowhere," while the traffic light at the crossing had been green. But CCTV footage of the incident along with footage taken from a dashcam of a van travelling directly behind Rockett showed her car did indeed break the red light, the Irish Mirror reported. When the video was played in court, the victim covered her eyes to avoid watching it. Rockett later said she took her eyes off the road to look for her sister's home. Judge Pauline Codd noted drivers must always be careful when driving, particularly in residential areas. "The consequences are enormous for (the victim),' she said. 'Her life as she knew it has been undone by this accident. One never intends to go out and do it, but when one is driving a car there is a massive responsibility. It can have fatal consequences. I consider going through a red light to be a very serious matter, especially at a pedestrian crossing." The court heard the maximum sentence for careless driving causing serious bodily harm is two years' imprisonment and/ or a fine of up to €10,000. Judge Codd adjourned the matter until June 4.

Putin mouthpieces declare 'British blood must be spilled' in terrifying WW3 threat after Kremlin accuses Britain of supplying explosives that killed top general

Vladimir Putin 's propagandists have declared that British blood 'must be spilled' in a haunting World War III threat, after they accused Britain of supplying the explosives that killed a top general in a Moscow car bomb last week. Lieutenant General Yaroslav Moskalik died in Moscow last week near his home in the eastern suburb of Balashikha after a Volkswagen Gold filled with explosives was detonated in his presence. The dead military man was a deputy head of the main operational department in the General Staff of the Russian army. While the Kremlin last week blamed Ukraine for the attack, Putin's propagandists have now turned their ire on Britain. So-called military expert Andrei Klintsevich told Russia 1 that Britain's security service handed explosives to the perpetrators 'by the ton.' Propagandist Vladimir Solovyov angrily added: 'We do realise that someone is creative a network of planted explosives and [transporting] these explosives. 'When we say that British security services are behind every terrorist attack, it means that the blood of the British who authorised the killings on Russian soil must be spilled. 'They must realise that they will pay personally. An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.' Solovyov threatened revenge on the alleged suppliers of the explosives and British intelligence. 'If these factories blow up [as well as] the headquarters of the intelligence agencies that gave the go-ahead for the terrorist attacks, they should not be surprised,' he said. The commander was personally in charge of briefing Vladimir Putin on the war in south-eastern Crimea. The bombing has been blamed on Ukraine, as was the December assassination of Lt-Gen Igor Kirillov, 54, in charge of Russia 's radiation, chemical and biological defence troops, who died in a bomb blast as he emerged from his apartment building in Moscow. This month also saw the killing in a car bombing of electronic warfare expert Yevgeny Rytikov, 34, head of the design bureau at the Bryansk Electromechanical Plant. Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky appeared to take responsibility for the assassinations, saying he was this week briefed by his head of Foreign Intelligence 'on the liquidation of individuals from the top command of the Russian armed forces'. He said: 'Thank you for your work.' It comes after Putin lackey Dmitry Medvedev warned that Sweden and Finland, two of NATO's latest members, are now potential targets of nuclear revenge. The moment of the explosion said to have killed Yaroslav Moskalik, deputy head of the Main Operations Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces Dmitry Medvedev, who has styled himself as one of Russia 's most outspoken anti-Western hawks, appeared to be referring to Sweden and Finland, the last two countries to join the Western military alliance. If conflict were to arise, nuclear weapons would not be off the table, the TASS state news agency reported. 'The non-aligned status gave them [Finland and Sweden] certain international perks, given their geopolitical position and many other factors,' Medvedev said. 'And now they are part of a bloc hostile to us which means they automatically became a target for our armed forces, including potential retaliatory strikes and even the nuclear component or preventive measures within the framework of a military doctrine.' Sweden was granted full membership of NATO last March, while Finland joined in April 2023, extending the alliance's border with Russia by over 1,300km. Last week, Moscow also warned Britain against deploying a 'coalition of the willing' in Ukraine, declaring it could lead to a nuclear World War Three. Putin hawk Sergei Shoigu, secretary of the powerful Russian security council and ex-defence minister, said Russia rejected Western boots on the ground in the war-torn country.

Cullman man arrested after high-speed chase, foot pursuit in Decatur park

Apr. 9—A Cullman man was arrested in Decatur on Friday after fleeing from police officers in his vehicle — with his teenage son inside — and later on foot through Austinville Park, according to a police affidavit. Christopher Wayne Lynn, 39, faces 11 charges including unlawful possession of a controlled substance, third-degree domestic violence, and attempting to elude a police officer. After the arrest, he was transported to Morgan County Jail and held in lieu of a $7,300 bond, according to jail records, and remained in custody as of Tuesday afternoon. According to the affidavit, a Decatur police officer noticed Lynn driving a silver Volkswagen Gold with no tag and improper headlights. "Upon initiating a vehicle stop near Corrine Avenue and Austinville Road Southwest, the vehicle continued eastbound before entering the parking lot of 108 14th Street Southwest," the affidavit said. "The vehicle then went off road in between two businesses, breaking through a wooden fence before reentering Austinville Road." The affidavit said Lynn ran two red lights and reached speeds of up to 70 miles per hour in a 30 mph zone. "The pursuit ended with Lynn's vehicle (becoming) disabled at Austinville Park after causing property damage," the affidavit said. "Lynn fled the scene of the accident before being placed under arrest." The affidavit said after a brief foot chase through Austinville Park, police apprehended Lynn and three bags of synthetic marijuana, or spice, were found near where he wrecked and an additional four bags were found on 14th Street Southwest. The bags weighed a total of 10 grams. Lynn's 17-year-old son was with him in the vehicle during the police chase and when he wrecked, according to the affidavit. Lynn in 2019 pleaded guilty to first-degree robbery in connection with an armed robbery of the CVS Pharmacy on Beltline Road, according to court records. He was sentenced to five years in prison followed by five years of probation. His probation was at one time revoked when he allegedly got drunk and assaulted his father and juvenile son at a campground in Tennessee. — or 256-340-2442.
