ASEAN Tech Summit 2025 to boost regional innovation

THE ASEAN Technology Cooperation & Development Summit 2025 was officially unveiled at The Exchange 106 in Kuala Lumpur on August 6, 2025. Hosted by Intrinsic SEA, the summit is a strategic side event of WE2025: Future in Motion and is designed to advance cross-border technology cooperation and support the WE2025 mission of promoting inclusive innovation, sustainable development, and regional economic leadership. The two-day event will take place from November 25–26, 2025, at MITEC in Kuala Lumpur. The soft launch was officiated by Datuk Mohammad Yusof Apdal, the Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation. Other notable figures present included Ravenna Chen, CEO of Intrinsic SEA; Dr. Zhao Xiangdong, Counsellor for Science and Technology, Embassy of the People's Republic of China; Richard Teo, Executive Chairman of Qube Integrated Malaysia; and Mr. Hafiidz Amer, CSO of Exchange 106. The summit is expected to bring together over 100 companies, more than 50 global investors, and 2,000 innovators and ecosystem leaders from various countries, including ASEAN nations, China, Canada, Australia, the Middle East, Europe, and Japan. The event aims to position Malaysia as a regional innovation hub and a key enabler for ASEAN-wide collaboration in science, technology, and innovation. The summit will feature a technology exhibition with over 100 booths highlighting cutting-edge innovations. The event will also focus on five strategic pillars: Future Mobility & Smart Transportation, Future Healthcare & Digital Medicine, Future Consumer & Digital Commerce, Future Building & Safety Emergency Response, and Future Employment & Entrepreneurship. The programme will include a visionary opening ceremony, leadership keynotes, ministerial roundtables, and an ASEAN startup and investor showcase. Yusof highlighted that the summit aligns with Malaysia's ambition to lead regional innovation and supports the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation's (MOSTI) mission to transform the country into a global technology developer by 2030. He also emphasised the importance of gender-inclusive innovation ecosystems, noting that platforms like this summit are vital for closing the gender gap in STEM. Teo added that while the summit is open to all, it ensures women have meaningful opportunities to lead in tech innovation. In her statement, Chen, emphasised that the summit is not just about building connections but about 'delivering outcomes'. She added, 'By aligning regional strengths in technology and industry, we aim to catalyse real collaboration: accelerating project implementation, integrating technology into key value chains, and fostering a globally competitive ecosystem that empowers ASEAN's next wave of growth and innovation'. Chen also noted that the summit is a 'strategic commitment' aligned with Malaysia's fifth ASEAN Chairmanship, the 10th anniversary of the ASEAN Community, and the shared aspirations of ASEAN Vision 2045. KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia is expanding its investment in research and development (R&D) as part of its push to become a high-technology nation by 2030, said Deputy Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Mohammad Yusof Apdal. He highlighted that Malaysia's gross expenditure on R&D (GERD) reached 1.01% of gross domestic product in 2022, a notable increase, with more than 51% contributed by the industry sector. 'Looking ahead, we are targeting GERD to reach 2.5% by 2030, in line with our national goal of transforming into a high-technology nation,' Mohammad Yusof said in his speech at the soft launch of the Asean Technology Cooperation and Development Summit 2025 today. He said the mission of the Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry (Mosti) is anchored in a vision to transform Malaysia from a technology user into a technology developer with global market capabilities by 2030. 'We are committed to unlocking value through innovation that is commercially viable, socially inclusive, and globally relevant.' Mohammad Yusuf said the government is accelerating real-world innovation with the National Technology and Innovation Sandbox (NTIS), providing a platform for pre-commercial technologies to be tested and adapted at scale. 'Since its inception, NTIS has supported numerous innovative solutions, focusing on applications ranging from precision drones to AI diagnostics and renewable energy systems.' Additionally, Malaysia is investing in talent as an estimated 600,000 Malaysians will need to be reskilled over the next three to five years due to artificial intelligence and automation. 'Mosti is addressing this challenge through structured training pathways, academic-industry partnerships, and regional innovation exchanges.' Mohammad Yusof said that as chair of Asean, Malaysia is committed to leading efforts that drive regional integration and forward-looking cooperation. 'One of our key priorities is to accelerate innovation and technology-driven development – not only within our borders, but across the wider Asean community.' The soft launch was attended by the embassy of China's science and technology counsellor Dr Zhao Xiangdong and second secretary for science and technology Dr Zhang Tianhang. The Asean Technology Cooperation and Development Summit 2025, organised by Intrinsic SEA, will be held alongside WE2025: Future in Motion, a three-day programme from Nov 25 to 27 organised by Qube Integrated Malaysia Sdn Bhd. The summit, to be held on Nov 25 and 26 at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre, Kuala Lumpur, is expected to secure over RM200 million in innovation and investment deals. Themed 'Future in Motion,' it will focus on five pillars – future mobility and smart transportation, future healthcare and digital medicine, future consumer and digital commerce, future building and safety emergency response, and future employment and entrepreneurship. KUALA LUMPUR: The Asean Technology Cooperation and Development Summit 2025 aims to secure over RM200 million in innovation and investment deals during its two-day run on November 25–26 at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (Mitec). Intrinsic SEA's chief executive officer, Ravenna Chen, said over 100 companies, more than 50 global investors and 2,000 innovators and ecosystem leaders from Asean, China, Canada, Europe and other regions are expected to attend the summit. "We plan to host over 50 top investors from across the globe, featuring five startup pitches and five scale-up pitches. In addition, four major corporate innovation platforms will be launched by companies that are well-prepared and actively seeking innovative solutions. "Internally, our management fund is worth 200 million Canadian dollars. We aim to leverage our networks in Canada, Japan and China to invest in South Asia as well," she told reporters at today's soft launch and media preview of the Asean Technology Cooperation and Development Summit 2025. The soft launch was graced by the Deputy Science, Technology and Innovation (Mosti) Minister Datuk Mohammad Yusof Apdal. The summit, organised by Intrinsic SEA, is a flagship forum held alongside WE2025: Future in Motion, a three-day programme from Nov 25–27, 2025, organised by Qube Integrated Malaysia Sdn Bhd. "WE" stands for Women's Economics, Empowerment, Women Entrepreneurship, Women Excellence and Women Evolution. The summit will focus on five strategic pillars, namely: future mobility and smart transportation, future healthcare and digital medicine, future consumer and digital commerce, future building and safety emergency response, and future employment and entrepreneurship. Govt will consider current economic conditions for any targeted RON95 subsidy implementation

KUALA LUMPUR: The government will take into account the current economic situation when deciding on the implementation of the RON95 targeted subsidy, said Deputy Economy Minister Datuk Hanifah Hajar Taib. The deputy minister said the subsidy's implementation requires an in-depth evaluation at the Cabinet level, including feedback from the relevant ministries. 'We need to look at the economic conditions, and any proposals will first be presented to the Cabinet,' he told reporters after the WE2025: Future in Motion pre-launch event, here today. The government is expected to implement targeted RON95 petrol subsidies by the middle of this year, and it is currently in the final phase of designing a fair and effective targeting system to ensure the implementation meets the objectives. According to Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan, the mechanism for implementing the targeted RON95 subsidy is being fine-tuned. He said this will involve a two-tier pricing system, possibly using the MyKad system. Amir Hamzah added that the government does not want to make any pre-announcements regarding the targeted RON95 subsidy implementation and expects to make announcements after the first half of the year.
