All Hands Community Camp empowers kids with diverse activities
WICHITA FALLS (KFDX/KJTL) — From first aid training to free meals, one Wichita Falls summer camp is doing a whole lot more than just keeping kids busy. This summer, kids in Wichita Falls have the chance to dive into more than just fun. The All Hands Playwell Summer Camp is packed with activities designed to support kids emotionally, socially, and academically, all for just $20. WFISD awarded best communities for music education All Hands Community Camp Leader, Eternity Jackson, said it's more than just a summer camp; at All Hands Cultural Community Center, it's a place where kids come to grow. 'Relationships come first with the students, and we just empower individuals to grow personally, grow spiritually, kind of establish their identity and who they are. And then also on top of that, just having that career readiness,' Jackson said. For just $20 per child, campers can choose from a variety of activities, including swimming, cosmetology, gardening, math lessons, Bible study, and more. 'Culinary arts, first aid, cosmetology, art classes, gardening, reading, math, gym and life skills, as well as spiritual classes like bible study,' Jackson said. One of the most pivotal classes is life skills, taught by Camp Leader Eternity Jackson. 'I teach everything from anger management, stress management, mental health classes, physical health, like nutrition. It ranges from the small things to the large things and there all hands on,' Jackson said. 'So it's not like, oh, they're just doing a worksheet. You know, they're actually going to walk through those scenarios and kind of teach it back to us like, okay, this is what I learned. And now I'm going to actually apply it to my life.' Free meals are also included, making this camp a lifeline for working families during the long summer months. 'In all honesty, we understand that people, especially in this area can't really afford it. So, even with the donations, like a lot of people donate to this program just because they have seen the results in the past, it doesn't only benefit their behavior here, it also benefits their behavior at school and in the community,' Jackson said. From swimming to school preparation, all hands are working together to ensure every child has a safe and supportive place to grow this summer. There is still time to enroll! WFISD bands to represent community in 2026 London parade, seeking sponsors
WICHITA FALLS (KFDX/KJTL) — It's the kind of opportunity most high school band students only dream about, marching in London's iconic New Year's Day parade. But it'll take more than talent to get there. Almost 300 band students from Legacy and Memorial high schools have the chance to represent Wichita Falls in the 2026 London New Year's Day parade, and now, school leaders are turning to the community to help make the journey a reality. They're calling it a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, because that's precisely what it is. These students will represent not only WFISD but also Wichita Falls on an international stage. It's a chance to showcase their talent and all the work they've put in. Both schools will march as one band, showcasing unity as they play before a live audience of over half a million people and a TV audience of 300 million. However, the journey to London comes with a steep price tag. With airfare, lodging, meals, and other expenses, the total price is close to $1 million. So, organizers are reaching out to the community for support, either in the form of sponsors or donations, to make these students' dreams come true. The great thing is, every donation is 100% tax-deductible. 'Our band booster organizations for both schools are a 501 (c) (3). So, every donation is tax-deductible. It's tax-deductible for our businesses in our community, and a 100% write-off for all of them. So, if you go to our link, you can find all that information on there and you can have an automatic receipt for your tax records', said legacy high school band director, Loy Studer. For anyone who gives, you're not just helping a kid get to London, you're changing lives. Donation Link: WFISD Bands Donations Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Changes made to upcoming Wichita Falls Symphony Orchestra performance
WICHITA FALLS (KFDX/KJTL) — A performer's cancellation will cause the Wichita Falls Symphony Orchestra concert on Saturday, April 26, to undergo changes. Executive Director Alicia Deges said the original performer, Valeriy Sokolov, had to cancel at the last minute, so they decided to bring in a new performer, violinist Elizabeth Pitcairn. WFISD school board presents turnaround plan for Hirschi Middle School Pitcairn will perform on her legendary Red Violin of film and folklore as part of a bravado overture, violin concerto, and symphonic dances. Deges said this is a concert you won't want to miss. 'She's the owner of the famous red violin. She plays the violin that's known as the red Mendelssohn Stradivarius that was made by Stradivarius in 1720, and so we're really excited to be able to have her come to perform the Mendelssohn violin concerto,' Deges said. The concert will be held on April 26 at First Baptist Church. A pre-concert talk will begin at 6:45 p.m., and the concert will start at 7:30 p.m. For more information on how to purchase your tickets, click here. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
