SWCorp installs CCTV in Melaka to stop illegal waste dumping

MELAKA: The Melaka Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp) is intensifying efforts to tackle illegal waste disposal by deploying CCTV cameras at key dumping sites. Four locations—Telok Mas, Alor Gajah, Batu Berendam, and Jasin—have already been fitted with mobile surveillance units. SWCorp director Nor Zaki Md Nor stated that this measure aims to identify offenders and support legal enforcement. 'The CCTV initiative has reduced illegal dumping by 60 to 70 percent in monitored areas, leading to the closure of several hotspots,' he said during the Gotong-Royong Cuci Duyong programme in Kampung Pengkalan Rama Tengah. The programme, part of the Wakil Rakyat Untuk Rakyat (WRUR) initiative, was officiated by Duyong assemblyman Datuk Mohd Noor Helmy Abdul Halem. Nor Zaki highlighted that most illegal dumping involves construction, commercial, and industrial waste handled by unlicensed operators. Last year, one case resulted in a RM20,000 court fine. Additionally, SWCorp is running the Clean City Campaign, targeting urban cleanliness in collaboration with WRUR. 'We clean thoroughly, even in areas outside our jurisdiction,' Nor Zaki added. Mohd Noor Helmy noted that 180 volunteers, including SWCorp staff, RELA members, and residents, participated in the gotong-royong. Kampung Pengkalan Rama Tengah was chosen due to its exclusion from regular cleaning services by local councils. - Bernama

SWCorp Installs CCTV To Combat Illegal Waste Disposal In Melaka

GENERAL MELAKA, July 20 (Bernama) -- The Melaka Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp) is stepping up efforts to combat illegal waste dumping by installing closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras to monitor the situation and facilitate legal action. Its director, Nor Zaki Md Nor, said four out of 12 recurring illegal dumping hotspots in the state, Telok Mas, Alor Gajah, Batu Berendam, and Jasin, have so far been equipped with mobile CCTV units. He told reporters in Kampung Pengkalan Rama Tengah today that the initiative, which began this year, will be expanded to other identified locations in stages. 'The installation of CCTV is a new approach we're implementing to curb illegal dumping by identifying offenders and facilitating legal action. 'So far, we've seen promising results, with a 60 to 70 percent reduction at these sites, eventually leading to the closure of several hotspots,' he said after the Gotong-Royong Cuci Duyong programme. The programme was held in conjunction with the Wakil Rakyat Untuk Rakyat (WRUR) initiative for the Duyong state constituency, officiated by Duyong assemblyman Datuk Mohd Noor Helmy Abdul Halem. Nor Zaki noted that most of the illegal dumping sites were used for the disposal of solid waste from the construction, commercial, industrial and institutional sectors, involving unlicensed cleaning operators. He added that last year, one case involving illegal dumping was successfully brought to court, resulting in a RM20,000 fine. Separately, he said the Clean City Campaign is currently in progress, focusing on cleaning up towns and urban centres in conjunction with the WRUR programme.

Eight Transit Homes Completed In Eight Melaka Constituencies

MELAKA, July 17 (Bernama) -- A total of eight transit homes, costing RM560,000, have been completed by the Melaka Housing Board (LPM) in eight state legislative assemblies (DUN) in the state as of mid-July. Housing, Local Government, Drainage, Climate Change and Disaster Management Committee deputy senior exco Datuk Zulkiflee Mohd Zin said the completed transit homes were in Tanjung Bidara, Paya Rumput, Taboh Naning, Merlimau, Duyong, Lendu, Pengkalan Batu and Pantai Kundur. He said the 'One DUN, One Transit House' initiative, previously known as 'Rumah Bencana', began to be implemented in 2023, functioning as temporary accommodation for people affected by disasters such as fires, floods, storms and other emergencies. "Currently, there is another transit home in the construction process in the Serkam constituency, while in other DUNs, they (transit homes) will be built in stages in line with the state government's commitment to provide temporary shelter to help people affected by disasters. "We suggest that the transit homes be built near or within the area of the State Legislative Assembly Development and Coordination Committee (Japerun) Office because it will be monitored and managed by them," he told reporters here today. He said this after officiating the Duyong DUN Transit Home handover ceremony in conjunction with the Wakil Rakyat Untuk Rakyat (WRUR) Programme, attended by Duyong assemblyman Datuk Mohd Noor Helmy Abdul Halem. At the ceremony, Zulkiflee also gave out the transit home handover letter by LPM executive director Datuk Murad Husin to Mohd Noor Helmy. Zulkiflee said the cost of the transit homes being built was RM70,000 per unit, and accommodation in these homes was provided free of charge, including the cost of utility bills to be borne by Japerun. "We are hoping that the construction of transit homes will be completed soon in all 28 state assemblies in Melaka so that it can be used by the people in need," he also said.

Melaka AADK reports 87% increase in client recovery rate in 2024

MELAKA: The recovery rate among clients of the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) in Melaka rose to 87% in 2024, up from 85% in 2023, according to its state director Noor Azrimah Ahmad. She said the figure was higher than the recovery rate targeted by AADK headquarters, which was set at 75 per cent. She said the rise in the recovery rate was driven by several factors, including the effectiveness of the Community-Based Treatment and Rehabilitation Programme, as well as the clients' physical and psychological resilience, and strong support from their families and the community. "With the cooperation of various parties, including the state government, the agency also regularly carries out programmes to reach out to the clients, helping them to foster the self-will to reintegrate into the community. "Through the programme, we conduct engagement sessions with clients either one-on-one or in groups, which they are required to attend at the agency's district office. The programme is also carried out within the community under the Program Wakil Rakyat Untuk Rakyat (WRUR)," she said last night. She spoke to reporters after the Second Chance: Kita Bantu Kita programme with the programme's clients, held in conjunction with the WRUR initiative for the Duyong state constituency. The event was opened by state science, technology, innovation and digital communication chairman Datuk Fairul Nizam Roslan, which was also attended by Duyong assemblyman Datuk Mohd Noor Helmy Abdul Halem. Elaborating, Noor Azrimah said the data shows that there are currently 1,400 AADK clients in the state who are still undergoing rehabilitation treatment. She said most clients had a history of abusing synthetic drugs, particularly amphetamine-type stimulants such as methamphetamine and ecstasy, noting that the relapse rate last year stood at 40%. "Therefore, families play a crucial role in supporting and helping clients stay away from drug abuse, while the community must also break the stigma against them by offering opportunities for reintegration," she added. Meanwhile, Mohd Noor Helmy said the Second Chance: Kita Bantu Kita programme with clients would continue to be held in the constituency to ensure these individuals do not feel sidelined, while also providing support to help them break free from unhealthy activities. "The WRUR is a starting point for us to reach out to this group, and I believe the programme has the potential to create a positive impact and bridge the gap between AADK clients and the community," he added. - Bernama
