Melaka AADK Reports 87 Pct Increase In Client Recovery Rate Last Year

Barnama2 days ago
MELAKA, July 16 (Bernama) -- The recovery rate among clients of the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) in Melaka rose to 87 per cent last year, up from 85 per cent in 2023, according to state AADK director Noor Azrimah Ahmad.
She said the figure was higher than the recovery rate targeted by AADK headquarters, which was set at 75 per cent.
According to her, the rise in the recovery rate was driven by several factors, including the effectiveness of the Community-Based Treatment and Rehabilitation Programme (RPDK), as well as the clients' physical and psychological resilience, and strong support from their families and the community.
'Besides that, the AADK, with the cooperation of various parties, including the state government, regularly carries out programmes to reach out to the clients, helping them to foster self-will to reintegrate into the community.
'Through the RPDK programme, we conduct engagement sessions with clients either one-on-one or in groups, which they are required to attend at the district AADK office. The programme is also carried out within the community under the Program Wakil Rakyat Untuk Rakyat (WRUR),' she said last night.
She spoke to reporters after the Second Chance: Kita Bantu Kita programme with RPDK clients, held in conjunction with the WRUR initiative for the Duyong state constituency. The event was officiated by State Science, Technology, Innovation and Digital Communication Committee chairman Datuk Fairul Nizam Roslan, which was also attended by Duyong assemblyman Datuk Mohd Noor Helmy Abdul Halem.
Elaborating, Noor Azrimah said based on data, there are currently 1,400 AADK clients in the state who are still undergoing rehabilitation treatment.
She said most of the clients were involved in the abuse of synthetic drugs, particularly amphetamine-type stimulants such as methamphetamine and ecstasy, noting that the relapse rate last year stood at 40 per cent.
'Therefore, families play a crucial role in supporting and helping clients stay away from drug abuse, while the community must also break the stigma against them by offering opportunities for reintegration,' she added.

HRPB Adopts PACS For Digital Radiology Storage, Boosts Healthcare Efficiency

IPOH, July 18 (Bernama) -- Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital (HRPB) here has adopted the Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS), a move expected to improve diagnostic efficiency, accelerate patient treatment and reduce reliance on film and physical storage space. Perak Health Department deputy director (Medical) Dr Roniyuzam Abd Malek said the move aligns with the government's efforts to digitalise the national healthcare system. He said PACS enables radiology images such as X-rays, CT scans and MRIs to be stored, accessed and shared digitally, eliminating the need for physical film. 'This also facilitates data sharing within the Ipoh cluster hospitals, reduces the risk of medical errors and enhances patient safety. 'I am confident PACS will benefit not only doctors and radiology staff but the entire healthcare team, as timely and accurate treatment starts with efficient diagnosis,' he said at the state PACS handover ceremony, which was also attended by HRPB director Dr Saiful Azlan Sharif here today. Dr Roniyuzam said the Radiology Department previously faced challenges such as lengthy data retrieval processes, rising film printing costs, and the growing patient load. 'There was also the risk of misplaced films, and repeated radiography tests would increase patients' radiation exposure, particularly among children. 'Therefore, the implementation of PACS at HRPB marks a significant step forward in the digital evolution of healthcare services,' he said. The PACS project at HRPB is part of the Health Ministry's strategic initiative to provide efficient and secure digital storage and access for radiology images.

Malaysia Unveils AI-Powered Heart2Miss Breakthroughs At ESC-Heart Failure Congress

KUALA LUMPUR, July 18 (Bernama) -- Groundbreaking findings from Malaysia's Heart2Miss heart failure screening programme were presented at the European Society of Cardiology–Heart Failure Congress on May 18, 2025, in Serbia, highlighting major advances in early heart failure detection powered by artificial intelligence (AI). Supported by AstraZeneca Malaysia, the initiative uses state-of-the-art cardiac ultrasound analysis and was launched in June 2024 with backing from Sarawak's Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government, Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian. In a statement, AstraZeneca said the programme's effectiveness was demonstrated through the screening of 1,000 high-risk patients within a year, identifying 120 positive cases, by using a decentralised, community-based rapid cardiac ultrasound triage model. 'This approach leveraged the expertise of underemployed bioscience graduates as mobile community sonographers, reducing the burden on tertiary centres while enhancing patient referrals and outpatient management. 'Additionally, it facilitated earlier interventions and provided new career opportunities in health diagnostics,' the statement read. According to the statement, the programme's implementation at Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) has significantly streamlined referrals and outpatient care, cutting patient wait times for appointments from nine months to just a few days at nearby health clinics. Heart2Miss Principal Investigator Dr Diana Hui-Ping Foo highlighted that the initiative demonstrates the power of combining innovation with equity, leveraging AI-echo ( telehealth and task-shifting to enable early heart failure detection at the community level. 'By training underutilised bioscience graduates as mobile echo screeners and introducing an intermediary care tier, we enhance primary care support and reduce burden on tertiary cardiac services,' said Foo, who is also the SGH Clinician-Researcher and Head of Human Physiology Lab. Dr Diana Foo spearheaded the study alongside Dr Alan Fong, SGH's Head of Clinical Research Centre. Their collaboration with AstraZeneca Malaysia has been recognised as a model public-private partnership in advancing health outcomes.

Domestic violence surge spurs action from ministry

Advocates for change: Participant Nor Azila Muda, 47, (centre) holding a sign calling for the elimination of violence against women at the Women's Wellbeing Advocacy Programme @ Domestic Violence (Aku Wanita @ KRT) in Kuala Ibai. — Bernama KUALA TERENGGANU: A total of 2,467 cases of domestic violence were recorded nationwide from January to April this year, most of them involving housewives, says Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Ahmad. The Deputy Women, Family and Community Development Minister said studies showed that most of the abuses were committed by people close to the victim. 'There may be some (victims) who do not even realised they are being abused because the abuse is not just physical, it is emotional. 'Sometimes the perpetrators also use 'reverse psychology',' Noraini said, Bernama reported. 'Studies also found that most abuse is committed by the people closest to the victim or among family members,' she told reporters after launching the Women's Wellbeing Advocacy Programme @ Domestic Violence (Aku Wanita @ KRT) here yesterday. Noraini said that from January to April, 104 cases of domestic violence were recorded in Terengganu. Although the number was a decrease compared to 130 cases recorded during the same period last year, the figure was still worrying, she added. The ministry has started various initiatives to help reduce the number of domestic violence cases, including through the Aku Wanita @ KRT Programme. Through the programme, issues related to domestic violence will be discussed in depth with experts and survivors who will share how they escaped and recovered from abusive relationships. 'In addition, a psychological intervention session called 'K-Chat' has also been introduced through this programme.' The session is a group intervention between survivors with trained counsellors and facilitators to help participants understand and deal with issues that have befallen them due to the abuse, she added.
