Music legend Phil Collins seen in rare appearance amid health battle Phil Collins was out in force to support his son Matthew as he played for Austrian football club WSG Tirol at the weekend, with the music legend making a rare appearance Singer and drummer Phil Collins has been candid about his health struggles (Image: undefined via Getty Images ) Music icon Phil Collins made a rare public appearance this weekend to support his son Matthew Collins during a crucial match with Austrian football team WSG Tirol. The father and son were spotted together in the stands, capturing a rare moment in a heartfelt photo after the game. Best known for timeless hits like In the Air Tonight, the 74-year-old musician shares Matthew and Nicholas with ex-wife Orianne Cevey, along with three other children: Joely, Lily, and Simon, 48. Phil met Orianne in the 1990s while she was working as his translator in Switzerland. The two married in 1999 but later parted ways in 2008. ‌ Despite WSG Tirol's narrow 3-2 defeat to Hartberg in the play-off on Saturday, Phil stayed to show support for his 20-year-old son and the team. ‌ Phil Collins' footballer son Matthew, 20, shares rare Instagram snap with his father as he supports him at game Interestingly, Matthew's connection to the Genesis frontman wasn't immediately known when he joined the squad. Head coach Manuel Ludwiger explained, "We Google the players we take on trial to find out about their past careers, it was only then that we found out Matthew is Phil Collins' son. We haven't signed him as a publicity stunt. It is purely down to his footballing ability.", reports the Mirror. Phil has openly discussed Matthew's deep-seated passion for football, recalling a conversation that showed his son's confidence in becoming a professional player. "Matt loves music, but loves his football even more," Phil noted. For the latest TV and showbiz gossip sign up to our newsletter Earlier this year, Phil candidly shared news about his deteriorating health that's led to a complete lack of interest in creating music. The legendary drummer and singer, who hung up his sticks in 2022 due to escalating physical difficulties stemming from a spinal injury in 2007, gave a touching update on his wellbeing, having also been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in 2017. ‌ Speaking to Mojo magazine, he said, "I keep thinking I should go downstairs to the studio and see what happens. But I'm not hungry for it anymore." The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member added, "The thing is, I've been sick, I mean very sick." Recounting his long battle with spinal issues since 2009, he said, "My vertebrae have been crushing my spinal cord because of the position I drum in. It comes from years of playing. ‌ "I can't even hold the sticks properly without it being painful. I even used to tape the sticks to my hands to get through. Don't worry, I can still sing." In the poignant documentary released last year, 'Phil Collins: Drummer First', which was filmed over two years, Phil revisits his journey, placing emphasis on his drumming rather than his famous vocals. The deeply emotional film depicts the gifted artist grappling with the harsh reality that drumming, an art form once intrinsic to his life, had slipped away, and his days performing live were conclusively behind him. In the documentary, Phil addresses the impact of his health on his ability to play drums, saying: "It's still kind of sinking in a little bit. You know, I'm 71. I've spent all my life playing drums. To suddenly not be able to do that is a shock. ‌ "If I wake up one day and I can hold a pair of drumsticks, then I will have a crack at it. I just feel like I've used up my air miles," and confessed: "To be suddenly not be able to do that is a shock. If I can't do what I did as well as I did it, I'd rather relax and not do anything." Phil also expressed how his physical decline has affected him mentally: "I'm not a singer who plays the drums. I'm more of a drummer who sings a bit." Phil Collins seen with footballer son in rare appearance after health issues

Phil Collins has been spotted in a loving family photo with his 20-year-old football star son while facing ongoing health issues. The legendary Genesis songwriter and drummer, 74, retired from music some time ago after battling severe nerve damage and deteriorating mobility. He's been unable to play his drums since 2019 and called time on his music career in 2022, instead choosing to prioritise his health and time with his family. And part of that precious family time has involved the In the Air Tonight singer going to watch his footballer son Mathew in a game over the weekend. Mathew, 20, who Phil shares with ex-wife Orianne Cevey, plays for WSG Tirol II, which is the youth academy team of Austrian club WSG Tirol. In a lovely photo, Mathew posed with dad Phil in the stands of the club's stadium, with the younger Collins family member still dressed in his football kit. Dad Phil opted for a snuggly fleeced jacket and plain black trousers, and was all smiles as he proudly watched his son during WSG Tirol II's 2-1 win over league rivals Fugen. The caption read, 'Two big wins today!', with Mathew seeing Phil's presence at the game as a big victory amid his superstar dad's chronic health battle. In the comments, Charlie McDowell -husband of Phil's daughter Lily Collins and the son of actor Malcolm McDowell – said 'Love this so much,' sending love to his brother-in-law and father-in-law. Surrey-born Emily In Paris star Lily also commented, saying 'I love everything about this,' offering congratulations to Mathew on his big win. Mathew's brother Nicholas followed his father's footsteps a little more closely by becoming a drummer, eventually playing for Genesis during some live shows. However, Phil himself is a fan of Tottenham Hotspur and has been following football for some time – he has also made supportive comments about Mathew's career in the past. Several years ago, he said in a statement: 'Matt loves music, but loves his football even more. He is certain he'll turn professional.' Mathew began his youth career playing for Astoria Walldorf's under-19s team before joining Hanover 96, who currently play in the second division in Germany. He signed a contract with WSG Tirol in 2023 and was moved into their academy set-up in order to develop his potential, with a view to one day playing to the first team. Sunday's game was attended by just 200 people – one of which was Phil – and saw WSG Tirol II stay in third place in their division as the season comes to a close. WSG Tirol II currently play in the Regionalliga Tirol, which is the fourth tier of Austrian football. Mathew has scored two goals for his team during this campaign, with his most recent coming in October 2024. Speaking about Mathew's dad, WSG Tirol II's manager Manuel Ludwiger said: 'We research the players we take on trial to find out about their past careers. It was only then that we found out Matthew is Phil Collins' son.' 'We haven't signed him as a publicity stunt. It is purely down to his footballing ability.' After recovering from hearing loss during the early 2000s, Phil's career got back on track, recording two further solo albums – Testify in 2002, and Going Back in 2010 – and a 2007 Genesis live album. More Trending However, in 2009, Phil needed surgery on a neck problem that had been plaguing him for some time – sadly, he lost feeling in his fingers and could only play drums if the sticks were taped to his hands. In 2014, he revealed that an undiagnosed nerve problem had been causing the issues and underwent further operations in 2015 – sadly the procedure still didn't reverse his issues. Shows in June 2017 were cancelled after Phil slipped over in a hotel room and badly injured himself, with the cause later revealed to be his foot drop, resulting from his 2015 operation. At that point, he began to use a cane to walk and stayed seated during Genesis shows, eventually retiring from performing a few years later. Got a story? More info This past weekend, music icon Phil Collins was spotted cheering on his son Matthew during a key match, as the two shared a heartwarming moment in a rare photo together. The 'In The Air Tonight' hitmaker has five kids, including Nicholas and Matthew with ex-partner Orianne Cevey, as well as his daughters Joely, Lily, and eldest son Simon, 48. Orianne, who became Phil's wife in 1999 after meeting him in Switzerland where she worked as his translator, parted ways with the musician in 2008 after nearly a decade of marriage. Matthew, a budding footballer for Austrian team WSG Tirol saw his father journey to Austria to watch him play, despite their side losing 3-2 against Hartberg in the play-offs on Saturday, the Collins family stayed on to lend their support post-game. WSG Tirol coach Manuel Ludwiger admitted he had no clue about the famous lineage of his new signee. He said: "We Google the players we take on trial to find out about their past careers, it was only then that we found out Matthew is Phil Collins' son. We haven't signed him as a publicity stunt. It is purely down to his footballing ability." Phil opened up about his boy's zeal for the beautiful game, reckoning that from a tender age, Matthew had the makings of a pro. "Matt loves music, but loves his football even more," he proclaimed. "He is certain he'll turn professional. 'The other day he said: 'Another five years and I'll be gone'." Genesis legend Phil Collins has candidly shared that his ailing health has stifled his passion for music-making. The iconic 74-year-old, who hung up his sticks in 2022 due to aggravating physical struggles linked to a 2007 back injury, reflected on his poignant journey and recent challenges, including a type 2 diabetes diagnosis he received in 2017. Opening up to Mojo magazine, he revealed: "I keep thinking I should go downstairs to the studio and see what happens. But I'm not hungry for it anymore." (Image:) The revered drummer and songwriter, whose accolades include Grammy triumphs and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, confided: "The thing is, I've been sick, I mean very sick." Phil first discussed his spine woes publicly in 2009, explaining: "My vertebrae have been crushing my spinal cord because of the position I drum in. It comes from years of playing." Despite the setbacks, Phil assured: "I can't even hold the sticks properly without it being painful. I even used to tape the sticks to my hands to get through. Don't worry, I can still sing." Last year saw the release of "Phil Collins: Drummer First," an intimate documentary reflecting on Phil's storied career behind the drums rather than the microphone. Filmed over two years, the potent documentary captures the heart-rending reality as Phil confronts the loss of his drumming capabilities, facing the finality of never gracing the stage again. The reality is still slowly setting in for Phil, who at 71, is grappling with the loss of his lifelong passion for drumming. Sitting at his drum kit, clutching his sticks, he reflected: "It's still kind of sinking in a little bit. You know, I'm 71. I've spent all my life playing drums. To suddenly not be able to do that is a shock. "If I wake up one day and I can hold a pair of drumsticks, then I will have a crack at it. I just feel like I've used up my air miles. To be suddenly not be able to do that is a shock. If I can't do what I did as well as I did it, I'd rather relax and not do anything." Phil found his physical decline deeply mentally challenging, telling saying: "I'm not a singer who plays the drums. I'm more of a drummer who sings a bit."

Phil Collins poses with footballer son in rare photo and makes sweet gesture

Phil Collins travelled to Austria to watch his son Matthew's play-off match but it wasn't to be for the 20-year-old after Hartberg shattered his promotion dreams Music legend Phil Collins was there to support son Matthew in his big game this weekend as they posed for a rare photo together in the stands. The musician, whose hits include 80s anthem In The Air Tonight, has two children, Nicholas and Matthew who he shares with Orianne Cevey, as well as daughters Joely and Lily, and son Simon, 48. ‌ Phil and Orianne met in the 90s when she was working as his translator in Switzerland, and they eventually tied the knot in 1999, but divorced nine years later in 2008. ‌ Matthew plays for Austrian football club WSG Tirol, and Phil travelled over to see him in action. They may have lost their play-off match to Hartberg 3-2 on Saturday, but the family stuck around to show their support after the match. Coach Manuel Ludwiger said he had no idea his player was related to Phil when they signed him. '"We Google the players we take on trial to find out about their past careers, it was only then that we found out Matthew is Phil Collins' son. We haven't signed him as a publicity stunt. It is purely down to his footballing ability." Phil spoke about son's passion for football and knew he had a shot at turning pro from an early age. "Matt loves music, but loves his football even more," he said. "He is certain he'll turn professional. 'The other day he said, "Another five years and I'll be gone". Genesis star Phil earlier this year opened up about being so ill that he's completely lost interest in making music. The 74-year-old drummer, singer, and songwriter - who retired in 2022 after he experienced worsening physical limitations as a result of a 2007 spinal injury - made the admission as he gave a poignant update on his health battles, after also being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in 2017. ‌ He told Mojo magazine: 'I keep thinking I should go downstairs to the studio and see what happens. But I'm not hungry for it anymore.' Grammy winner and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Phil added: 'The thing is, I've been sick, I mean very sick.' The musician first opened up about about his spinal problems in 2009, saying: 'My vertebrae have been crushing my spinal cord because of the position I drum in. It comes from years of playing.' Phil added: 'I can't even hold the sticks properly without it being painful. I even used to tape the sticks to my hands to get through. Don't worry, I can still sing.' Phil looked back at his life and music in his documentary, Phil Collins: Drummer First, which came out late last year after two years of filming. In the moving film, the star focused on his drumming career rather than his vocal fame. Some emotional scenes also show the multi-talented musician coming to terms with the fact that drumming was a skill lost to him, and that he'd never perform live again. "It's still kind of sinking in a little bit. You know, I'm 71. I've spent all my life playing drums. To suddenly not be able to do that is a shock," Phil said as he sat at his drum kit and held his sticks. He also shared: "If I wake up one day and I can hold a pair of drumsticks, then I will have a crack at it. I just feel like I've used up my air miles," and admitted: "To be suddenly not be able to do that is a shock. If I can't do what I did as well as I did it, I'd rather relax and not do anything." Explaining just how mentally debilitating his physical deterioration was to him, he also added: "I'm not a singer who plays the drums. I'm more of a drummer who sings a bit."

Phil Collins' footballer son Matthew, 20, shares rare Instagram snap with his father as he supports him at game

Phil Collins ' footballer son Matthew shared a rare Instagram snap with his father as he supported him at a game this weekend. The sporting star, 20, plays for Austrian side WSG Tirol and musician Phil, 74, was in the crowds on Sunday to see him play. Wearing his green and white football kit Matthew beamed next to his famous dad who wore a casual outfit. Matthew captioned his post: 'big wins today!' as he put his arm around Phil. Phil has five children with Matthew the youngest of them. His proud half sister, the actress Lily Collins, reshared the post and penned over the top: 'I love everything about this' along with a white heart emoji. The English footballer signed a contract with WSG Tirol in 2023. He played for Hannover's U19s earlier in his career but after the German club released him, he went on to impress on trial in Austria. Previously revealing his shock at the player's lineage, coach Manuel Ludwiger said: 'We Google the players we take on trial to find out about their past careers. 'It was only then that we found out Matthew is Phil Collins' son. 'We haven't signed him as a publicity stunt. It is purely down to his footballing ability.' Phil isn't Matthew's only superstar relative, however. His half sister Lily has made it big as an actress, most notably in the lead role in Emily in Paris. Several years ago, rock great Phil opened up on his son's passion for sport. 'Matt loves music, but loves his football even more,' he said. 'He is certain he'll turn professional. 'The other day he said, "Another five years and I'll be gone". 'He also looks at everything, Bundesliga, French league, everything.' Lily is back filming the next season of Emily In Paris just three months after welcoming daughter Tove with husband Charlie McDowell. In her post at the time Lily expressed her 'infinite gratitude' towards the surrogate who helped her become a mother. But after sharing an image of newborn Tove on Instagram, the actress was attacked online, with many accusing her of being part of a growing 'unethical' A-list trend. The backlash was so severe that US film producer Charlie released a statement asking people to spend 'less time spewing hateful words' as he said no one will know the true motivations behind why the couple chose to use a surrogate.
