Phil Collins seen with footballer son in rare appearance after health issues

Metro19-05-2025

Phil Collins has been spotted in a loving family photo with his 20-year-old football star son while facing ongoing health issues.
The legendary Genesis songwriter and drummer, 74, retired from music some time ago after battling severe nerve damage and deteriorating mobility.
He's been unable to play his drums since 2019 and called time on his music career in 2022, instead choosing to prioritise his health and time with his family.
And part of that precious family time has involved the In the Air Tonight singer going to watch his footballer son Mathew in a game over the weekend.
Mathew, 20, who Phil shares with ex-wife Orianne Cevey, plays for WSG Tirol II, which is the youth academy team of Austrian club WSG Tirol.
In a lovely photo, Mathew posed with dad Phil in the stands of the club's stadium, with the younger Collins family member still dressed in his football kit.
Dad Phil opted for a snuggly fleeced jacket and plain black trousers, and was all smiles as he proudly watched his son during WSG Tirol II's 2-1 win over league rivals Fugen.
The caption read, 'Two big wins today!', with Mathew seeing Phil's presence at the game as a big victory amid his superstar dad's chronic health battle.
In the comments, Charlie McDowell -husband of Phil's daughter Lily Collins and the son of actor Malcolm McDowell – said 'Love this so much,' sending love to his brother-in-law and father-in-law.
Surrey-born Emily In Paris star Lily also commented, saying 'I love everything about this,' offering congratulations to Mathew on his big win.
Mathew's brother Nicholas followed his father's footsteps a little more closely by becoming a drummer, eventually playing for Genesis during some live shows.
However, Phil himself is a fan of Tottenham Hotspur and has been following football for some time – he has also made supportive comments about Mathew's career in the past.
Several years ago, he said in a statement: 'Matt loves music, but loves his football even more. He is certain he'll turn professional.'
Mathew began his youth career playing for Astoria Walldorf's under-19s team before joining Hanover 96, who currently play in the second division in Germany.
He signed a contract with WSG Tirol in 2023 and was moved into their academy set-up in order to develop his potential, with a view to one day playing to the first team.
Sunday's game was attended by just 200 people – one of which was Phil – and saw WSG Tirol II stay in third place in their division as the season comes to a close.
WSG Tirol II currently play in the Regionalliga Tirol, which is the fourth tier of Austrian football.
Mathew has scored two goals for his team during this campaign, with his most recent coming in October 2024.
Speaking about Mathew's dad, WSG Tirol II's manager Manuel Ludwiger said: 'We research the players we take on trial to find out about their past careers. It was only then that we found out Matthew is Phil Collins' son.'
'We haven't signed him as a publicity stunt. It is purely down to his footballing ability.'
After recovering from hearing loss during the early 2000s, Phil's career got back on track, recording two further solo albums – Testify in 2002, and Going Back in 2010 – and a 2007 Genesis live album. More Trending
However, in 2009, Phil needed surgery on a neck problem that had been plaguing him for some time – sadly, he lost feeling in his fingers and could only play drums if the sticks were taped to his hands.
In 2014, he revealed that an undiagnosed nerve problem had been causing the issues and underwent further operations in 2015 – sadly the procedure still didn't reverse his issues.
Shows in June 2017 were cancelled after Phil slipped over in a hotel room and badly injured himself, with the cause later revealed to be his foot drop, resulting from his 2015 operation.
At that point, he began to use a cane to walk and stayed seated during Genesis shows, eventually retiring from performing a few years later.

Ross Kemp says he owes EastEnders ‘a great debt' and refuses to rule out return

The 60-year-old returned to EastEnders as Grant Mitchell after almost 10 years away during its 40th anniversary celebrations earlier this year, as his character returned to Albert Square to help his brother Phil with his mental health problems. Grant recently left Walford again for his home in Portugal. Asked on ITV's Loose Women whether he would return to the role again, Kemp said: 'You just don't know, do you? You don't know what's in the minds of the people who work on it. 'I've also (always) known that without it, I wouldn't have had the career that I've had, I've always owed it a great debt and it was very good to me, and hopefully I was good to it, and why not keep it that way? 'I've always believed that you should leave doors swinging rather than shut them.' Kemp, who went on to produce a number of documentaries since first leaving EastEnders in 1999 including Ross Kemp On Gangs, Ross Kemp In Afghanistan and Ross Kemp: Extreme World, said he enjoyed returning to the soap. He explained: 'It was so wonderful to jump into Grant's leather jacket again, which I can still get in. 'It's a family, it's an ongoing thing, and I'm talking about the past, and they're really busy doing their own thing, I just parachute in, and I exit generally by the tube station. 'But they've got to be welcoming, because it's like a high-speed train, you've got to jump on it at the right time or you miss it. 'So luckily, Steve McFadden (who plays Phil), and Paul Bradley (who plays Nigel Bates), and Letitia (Dean, who plays Sharon Watts) opened the door for me, and it was like going back home, and it was great.' Kemp began on the soap in 1990, and his previous appearance prior to his 2025 return, in 2016, marked his on-screen mother Dame Barbara Windsor's final episode as Peggy Mitchell. The actor currently hosts the BBC gameshow Bridge Of Lies, which challenges contestants to cross a digital bridge by choosing a true statement over a set of wrong ones.

'Speedo Summer' is here and the lads are getting their legs out

Whatever you call them, tiny swimwear for men is big business this summer, with searches up 41% in the UK. GQ has declared 2025 the year of 'Speedo summer,' while retailers are pushing short-shorts as the halfway house for men ready to dip their toes (or thighs) in the trend. 'They're designed to be noticed,' men's fashion stylist Phill Tarling tells Metro. 'They're not something to wear if you're a shrinking violet.' Though the Speedo style is synonymous with the brand, Nike, Reebok and Adidas all have versions to wear by the pool this summer, as do the likes of Roberto Cavalli and Moschino. They can thank Dolce & Gabbana and Theo James's barely-there briefs for contributing to the resurgence. Meanwhile, men's shorts designed for wearing out and about are getting shorter too, thanks to celebs like Harry Styles and Paul Mescal rocking a three-inch inseam. But Phil argues there's more to it than that, with the current trend a potential sign that straight men are becoming more fluid around style and perceptions of sexuality. 'For years, short shorts and Speedos were associated with the gay community,' he says. 'It's not so gay anymore to wear short shorts. It's metro, it's hetero, it's any sexuality. Men embrace Speedos because they can.' Our European counterparts have long embraced a thigh flash, with public swimming pools in France require men to wear tight-fitting trunks for hygiene reasons. You won't catch many long shorts in Australia, the birthplace of the Speedo, and warm countries including Spain, Portugal and Italy favour itty bitty boxers, too. So, with climate change causing record temperatures, it makes sense for the UK to follow suit. Short-shorts are particularly popular among Gen Z, says Phil, because they 'have their own rules on how they live' and aren't afraid to buck longstanding traditions ('my daughters' boyfriends all wear short shorts with Crocs and socks – it's a thing I don't understand!). He also thinks older guys are 'more acutely aware of their bodies now more than ever', so flesh-flashing fashion has prospered among those wanting to show off fitness gains. On the flip side though, stylist Nick Hem does point out that we don't often see short-shorts and speedos modelled by diverse body types. 'We're seeing some advertising with a broader range of body types – I've really noticed that with women – but with men's stuff, it's very athletic, going back to that old David Gandy era,' he tells Metro. Nick urges men to buy your speedos from a reputable brand, to ensure you aren't left with undies that turn transparent once you're in the water. 'We also need to talk about grooming,' he laughs. 'Without dictating it to people, I think that you've got to try and ensure that you keep a tidy appearance. Speedos always look better when…how do I put this…when things are neat.' More Trending Speedos can be really 'fun and playful,' so go to town with the huge variety of prints on offer. When it comes to short shorts, Phil recommends buying a chino material in the classic male shades, navy or beige, if you're feeling tentative. You could even try denim and turn them up to trial a shorter-short without splashing the cash. The golden rule? Make sure you feel good before you walk out the door. 'If you're on the beach, you've got to be able to walk with your head high and with confidence in your step,' says Nick. 'That's how you have to rock Speedos.' BBC viewers hail 'authentic and unpretentious' crime drama about real serial killer

The Black Forest Murders is a four-part series that was released in Germany in 2021 and has now landed on BBC iPlayer after being acquired by the broadcaster. BBC iPlayer has become the new home for an "intense" crime drama steeped in real events. The Black Forest Murders is a four-part series delving into the harrowing investigation of two young women's deaths in the south of Germany. Drawn from the factual Walter Roth book 'Soko Earle', the show fuses two actual criminal affairs from 2016, transforming them into enthralling police narrative fiction. ‌ The drama unfolds as the police uncover the body of a young woman, brutally murdered by a faceless assailant, igniting their hunt for the ruthless killer amidst a burgeoning pile of clues. ‌ Concurrently, the sleuths find themselves ensnared in another homicide case, leaving doubts about possible links to the first incident while uncanny similarities with an Austrian case from years before surface. Nina Kunzendorf stars as Barbara Kramer, with Tilman Strauß playing Thomas Riedle, complemented by a cast featuring Aliki Hirsch, Boidar Kocevski, Atrin Haghdoust, and David Richter, reports the Express. The description teases: "The clock is ticking... When a woman is bludgeoned to death, detectives face mounting pressure to crack the case and catch a killer. Intense crime drama inspired by real-life cases." Initially debuting in Germany, viewers there have extolled the series, with many binge-watching it in one intense session. A review acclaimed: "I watched the entire series in one sitting and thought it was excellent. The meticulous investigation was amazing. Nina Kunzendorf was at her best as a fair and likeable boss in a strong team." ‌ One viewer praised the four-part series enthusing, "I found this four-part series extremely good. It was exciting, with good dialogue, some of which was mumbled-it was due to the dialect -and a very good portrayal of a real series of murders. The actors did a very good job, especially Ms. Kramer, who acted convincingly. It was a glimpse behind the scenes of a special investigation unit. I'd be happy if there were more short series." Another said they couldn't help binge-watching: "We liked the series so much that we watched all the episodes right away. And it never got boring. This crime thriller was free of staged chases and unnecessary action-just good, real police work. Good actors, though difficult to understand at times." ‌ A third chimed in: "A wonderfully authentic and unpretentious narrative, a crime story like you'd only wish for, not cluttered with ridiculous subplots and overly contrived action. A fantastic team around Nina Kunzendorf, who always remains believable. Fantastic! I wish there were more original productions with such a dense atmosphere and such well-acted acting,". Following its acquisition by BBC, Sue Deeks, Head of BBC Programme Acquisition, remarked: "The Black Forest Murders is an authentic and compelling crime series focussing on the work of a meticulous investigative team." She further commented on the depth of the series adding: "As well as being a gripping murder mystery, the series offers a detailed look at the challenges of solving complex crimes, and the psychological toll on those involved in such high-stakes investigations." Black Forest Murders can be viewed on BBC iPlayer.
