The first episode of "WWE SmackDown" since "Backlash 2025" will air live on Friday, and there are some things to look out for. At the conclusion of "Backlash," John Cena successfully retained the Undisputed WWE Championship by pinning Randy Orton. Cena isn't scheduled to appear on the blue brand at this time. With reports surfacing on Cody Rhodes' inevitable return to TV in the near future, it leaves one to wonder if the wheels are in motion for a rematch between "The American Nightmare" and Cena. Fatu looked none too pleased with Cobb's appearance, as he's told Sikoa that he doesn't need his help. Things are expected to reach a boiling point between Fatu and Sikoa, but when? Tiffany Stratton's Title Run Threatened? Tiffany Stratton confronts Nia Jax over her sneak attacks during "WWE SmackDown."(via WWE) Tiffany Stratton is the reigning WWE Women's Champion, who is coming off the biggest win of her career against Flair at "WrestleMania 41." Still, Stratton can't seem to move on from Nia Jax. The two have history, as they were former allies before Stratton successfully cashed in the "Money in the Bank" briefcase to take the title from Jax. WWE Makes Shocking Talent Releases Just Before 'Friday Night SmackDown'
WWE made some office cuts on Friday, but now talent releases have been reported. Fightful reports that Dakota Kai, Braun Strowman, Shayna Baszler, Kayden Carter, and Katana Chance have been let go from their WWE contracts. The report noted that internal memos were sent out informing those in the company of the latest talent cuts. Advertisement This isn't the first time Strowman has been released by WWE. The former WWE titleholder was cut in 2021. "The Monster Among Men" was brought back in 2022 when Paul "Triple H" Levesque became the chief content officer of WWE. Strowman had recently been involved in the WWE United States Championship picture. The now-former Damage CTRL member was first let go by WWE in 2022. At the time, the company hadn't planned on renewing her expiring deal. Kai was brought back to WWE several months later. Baszler had been a member of the WWE roster since 2017. She enjoyed success on "WWE NXT," where she won the top female championship on the brand. WWE Officials Surprised by Huge 'Friday Night SmackDown' Change
Fans weren't the only ones surprised by a major change on Friday's episode of "WWE SmackDown." The aftermath of "WrestleMania 41" continued on the blue brand, and there were a few noteworthy moments on the show. Aleister Black made his return to WWE, taking The Miz out with Black Mass. There was also a triple threat tag team TLC match for the WWE Tag Team Championship, which garnered heavy praise from experts. Advertisement There was also one surprising moment on the show that featured a huge title change. Chelsea Green lost the WWE Women's United States Championship to Zelina Vega in an upset. It's one of the more stunning title changes under the creative watch of Paul "Triple H" Levesque, given how popular Green has become. Chelsea Green delivers a knee strike to Zelina Vega on Friday's episode of "WWE SmackDown."(via WWE) PWInsider reports that the title change even caught WWE officials off guard. It was mentioned in the report that Vega's title win was kept under wraps. Many backstage didn't know the championship would change hands until the match played out on "SmackDown." Many wonder if this title reign will be short-lived for Vega or if Green is moving up on the card. WWE recently gave Green her own faction, The Secret Hervice. WWE Women's Champion Tiffany Stratton will be seeking new challengers, and Green would fit the bill if she's ultimately elevated on WWE programming. For now, it appears Stratton's next challenger will be Nia Jax. Green became the inaugural champion by defeating Michin on the Dec. 14, 2024 episode of "WWE Saturday Night's Main Event." Her reign lasted over 130 days.
