SWCorp installs CCTV to combat illegal dumping in Melaka

MELAKA: The Melaka Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp) is stepping up efforts to combat illegal waste dumping by installing closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras to monitor the situation and facilitate legal action. Its director, Nor Zaki Md Nor, said four out of 12 recurring illegal dumping hotspots in the state, Telok Mas, Alor Gajah, Batu Berendam, and Jasin, have so far been equipped with mobile CCTV units. He told reporters in Kampung Pengkalan Rama Tengah today that the initiative, which began this year, will be expanded to other identified locations in stages. "The installation of CCTV is a new approach we're implementing to curb illegal dumping by identifying offenders and facilitating legal action. "So far, we've seen promising results, with a 60 to 70 percent reduction at these sites, eventually leading to the closure of several hotspots," he said after the Gotong-Royong Cuci Duyong programme. The programme was held in conjunction with the Wakil Rakyat Untuk Rakyat (WRUR) initiative for the Duyong state constituency, officiated by Duyong assemblyman Datuk Mohd Noor Helmy Abdul Halem. Nor Zaki said most of the illegal dumping sites were used for the disposal of solid waste from the construction, commercial, industrial and institutional sectors, involving unlicensed cleaning operators. He said that last year, one case involving illegal dumping was successfully brought to court, resulting in a RM20,000 fine. Separately, he said the Clean City Campaign is currently in progress, focusing on cleaning up towns and urban centres in conjunction with the WRUR programme. "The campaign involves thorough cleaning efforts, regardless of whether the area falls under our service jurisdiction or not," he said. Meanwhile, Mohd Noor Helmy said the Gotong-Royong Cuci Duyong programme saw the participation of 180 individuals, including SWCorp staff, members of the Malaysian Volunteer Department (Rela), and residents. He said that Kampung Pengkalan Rama Tengah was selected for the gotong-royong initiative to address cleanliness issues in areas not covered by the Historical Melaka City Council or SWCorp. – Bernama

Eight Transit Homes Completed In Eight Melaka Constituencies

MELAKA, July 17 (Bernama) -- A total of eight transit homes, costing RM560,000, have been completed by the Melaka Housing Board (LPM) in eight state legislative assemblies (DUN) in the state as of mid-July. Housing, Local Government, Drainage, Climate Change and Disaster Management Committee deputy senior exco Datuk Zulkiflee Mohd Zin said the completed transit homes were in Tanjung Bidara, Paya Rumput, Taboh Naning, Merlimau, Duyong, Lendu, Pengkalan Batu and Pantai Kundur. He said the 'One DUN, One Transit House' initiative, previously known as 'Rumah Bencana', began to be implemented in 2023, functioning as temporary accommodation for people affected by disasters such as fires, floods, storms and other emergencies. "Currently, there is another transit home in the construction process in the Serkam constituency, while in other DUNs, they (transit homes) will be built in stages in line with the state government's commitment to provide temporary shelter to help people affected by disasters. "We suggest that the transit homes be built near or within the area of the State Legislative Assembly Development and Coordination Committee (Japerun) Office because it will be monitored and managed by them," he told reporters here today. He said this after officiating the Duyong DUN Transit Home handover ceremony in conjunction with the Wakil Rakyat Untuk Rakyat (WRUR) Programme, attended by Duyong assemblyman Datuk Mohd Noor Helmy Abdul Halem. At the ceremony, Zulkiflee also gave out the transit home handover letter by LPM executive director Datuk Murad Husin to Mohd Noor Helmy. Zulkiflee said the cost of the transit homes being built was RM70,000 per unit, and accommodation in these homes was provided free of charge, including the cost of utility bills to be borne by Japerun. "We are hoping that the construction of transit homes will be completed soon in all 28 state assemblies in Melaka so that it can be used by the people in need," he also said.

Melaka AADK reports 87% recovery rate in drug rehabilitation

MELAKA: The National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) in Melaka recorded an 87 per cent recovery rate among its clients last year, marking an improvement from 85 per cent in 2023. State AADK director Noor Azrimah Ahmad attributed the rise to effective rehabilitation programmes and strong support systems. The recovery rate exceeded the national target of 75 per cent, highlighting the success of initiatives like the Community-Based Treatment and Rehabilitation Programme (RPDK). Noor Azrimah noted that physical and psychological resilience, along with family and community backing, played key roles in the positive outcome. 'Through RPDK, we conduct engagement sessions with clients individually or in groups, ensuring they remain committed to recovery,' she said. The programme operates under the Wakil Rakyat Untuk Rakyat (WRUR) initiative, fostering reintegration into society. Currently, 1,400 clients in Melaka are undergoing rehabilitation, with synthetic drugs like methamphetamine and ecstasy being the most commonly abused substances. Despite progress, the relapse rate remains at 40 per cent, underscoring the need for continued support. Duyong assemblyman Datuk Mohd Noor Helmy Abdul Halem emphasised the importance of community involvement in reducing stigma. 'The Second Chance programme ensures clients feel valued and supported in their recovery journey,' he said. - Bernama

Recently Unearthed Kota Melaka Alignment Will Be Preserved

MELAKA, July 15 (Bernama) -- The Melaka Museum Corporation (PERZIM) has assured that the area where a historic structure was discovered, and believed to be part of the old Melaka Fort bastion situated in the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) heritage site zone, will be preserved. Its general manager, Erne Hamsah, gave this assurance following the construction of a car park in front of Muzium Istana Melaka in Bandar Hilir, which was previously categorised as Taman Larangan (Forbidden Park). "Conservation work has already started with the appointment of conservators and archaeologists to carry out studies at the excavation site, while the parking lot construction, supervised by the Melaka Historic City Council (MBMB), is being reorganised following the discovery of the historic structure. "We will indeed preserve (the site) because among the structures identified is the old bastion that is important in the history of Melaka's defence. "We are also reviewing how the monument can be revealed to visitors without affecting the stability of the structure, seeing that there are many factors that need to be taken into account, including the environmental elements such as erosion and physical damage,' she said. She told reporters this after the "Warisan Santai' Programme of the 17th Melaka World Heritage City anniversary celebration in conjunction with the Duyong state constituency's 'Wakil Rakyat Untuk Rakyat' (WRUR) programme at Sekolah Kebangsaan Duyong, Hang Tuah Village here today, which was officiated by Duyong assemblyman Datuk Mohd Noor Helmy Abdul Halem. Elaborating on the car park project being developed, she said that only some of the alignments involved with the archaeological structures will be temporarily halted. 'Construction work on the parking lot will continue, but only certain alignments will be stopped for now, namely areas where the old city structure has been identified, while the rest will continue without affecting the heritage area. "PERZIM is also preparing the plans and the next measures to be presented to the state government,' she said.
