SWCorp installs CCTV to combat illegal dumping in Melaka

MELAKA: The Melaka Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp) is stepping up efforts to combat illegal waste dumping by installing closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras to monitor the situation and facilitate legal action.
Its director, Nor Zaki Md Nor, said four out of 12 recurring illegal dumping hotspots in the state, Telok Mas, Alor Gajah, Batu Berendam, and Jasin, have so far been equipped with mobile CCTV units.
He told reporters in Kampung Pengkalan Rama Tengah today that the initiative, which began this year, will be expanded to other identified locations in stages.
"The installation of CCTV is a new approach we're implementing to curb illegal dumping by identifying offenders and facilitating legal action.
"So far, we've seen promising results, with a 60 to 70 percent reduction at these sites, eventually leading to the closure of several hotspots," he said after the Gotong-Royong Cuci Duyong programme.
The programme was held in conjunction with the Wakil Rakyat Untuk Rakyat (WRUR) initiative for the Duyong state constituency, officiated by Duyong assemblyman Datuk Mohd Noor Helmy Abdul Halem.
Nor Zaki said most of the illegal dumping sites were used for the disposal of solid waste from the construction, commercial, industrial and institutional sectors, involving unlicensed cleaning operators.
He said that last year, one case involving illegal dumping was successfully brought to court, resulting in a RM20,000 fine.
Separately, he said the Clean City Campaign is currently in progress, focusing on cleaning up towns and urban centres in conjunction with the WRUR programme.
"The campaign involves thorough cleaning efforts, regardless of whether the area falls under our service jurisdiction or not," he said.
Meanwhile, Mohd Noor Helmy said the Gotong-Royong Cuci Duyong programme saw the participation of 180 individuals, including SWCorp staff, members of the Malaysian Volunteer Department (Rela), and residents.
He said that Kampung Pengkalan Rama Tengah was selected for the gotong-royong initiative to address cleanliness issues in areas not covered by the Historical Melaka City Council or SWCorp.

Man held over viral video of turtle mishandling in Cherating

KUANTAN: A 51-year-old man has been detained in connection with a viral video showing three people handling an adult turtle that was attempting to lay eggs on a beach near the Cherating Turtle Sanctuary yesterday. The suspect, who tested positive for drugs, was picked up at his home nearby at about 1pm today. Authorities are still tracking down his two accomplices. Acting Kuantan police chief Superintendent Mohd Adli Mat Daud said the Pahang Fisheries Department lodged a report at about 10am today after several video clips went viral showing three men disturbing a sea turtle that had come ashore to lay eggs. "Visitors at the beach recorded the men carrying the turtle at around 7am. The men were seen moving the turtle towards a hole they had dug earlier. "Investigations revealed that the men had carried the turtle and dug the hole in an attempt to expedite the egg-laying process. "However, after realising they were being closely watched by a group of visitors, they decided to release the turtle back into the sea," he said in a statement today. Adli said the suspects are believed to have been attempting to collect the turtle eggs for illegal sale or personal use. He said police were able to arrest one of the suspects based on the viral footage and are working closely with the Fisheries Department to locate the remaining two men. Adli said that under Section 27 of the Fisheries Act 1985, it is an offence to fish, disturb, harass, catch, or take any aquatic mammal or turtle, and offenders may be fined up to RM5,000. In the video, three men can be seen trying to carry a turtle that had emerged from the sea before one of them suddenly slips and falls on the sand. A visitor present at the beach is heard telling the men to let the animal go.

Three Terengganu officers remanded over RM25k bribery for building approvals

KUALA TERENGGANU: Three local authority officers in Terengganu have been remanded for six days over allegations of accepting bribes totalling RM25,000 to facilitate building plan approvals. The remand order, issued by Magistrate Yuhanis Mohd Roslan, follows an application by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC). The suspects, two men and one woman aged between 40 and 50, were detained yesterday afternoon after giving statements at the Terengganu MACC office. A source revealed that the alleged offences occurred between 2015 and 2019, with bribes transferred into their personal bank accounts. 'Initial investigations found that the three suspects allegedly committed the offences between 2015 and 2019. They are believed to have received bribes amounting to about RM25,000 through separate fund transfers into their respective personal bank accounts,' the source said. The bribes were linked to 14 projects. The arrests follow a separate case in January involving a government agency director detained over a RM900,000 bribery scandal. Terengganu MACC director Hazrul Shazreen Abd Yazid confirmed the latest arrests, stating the case is being investigated under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009. He did not rule out further arrests. - Bernama
