Visions of the end of the world take center stage at Walker Art Center

Visions of the end of the world take center stage at Walker Art Center originally appeared on Bring Me The News. The Walker Art Center is welcoming the New York Times-bestselling author Adrienne Maree Brown as a guest curator at the Walker Cinema this summer. Brown is drawing on her work as an activist, science fiction scholar, and doula to probe the question of how we can or will survive the end of the world with a series of familiar near-dystopian films that offer a starting point for that discussion. The Walker says the series, titled "Compelling Speculations on Human Survival," looks "beyond dystopia to narratives that imagine compelling scenarios for what human life could look like if we find a way to persist on Earth." It centers around ideas of "dreams, love, environmental stewardship, and collective survival" to recontextualize familiar movies like Black Panther's questions around what it means to be a ward of the environment, Interstellar's suggestion that love can be a guiding principle in human survival, and Star Trek IV's cautionary tale of what we lose as "progress" erases the natural world. Here's what is playing this summer during "Compelling Speculations on Human Survival," which runs from July 11 through Aug. 9. July 11–12: Black Panther (2018) July 18–19: The NeverEnding Story (1984) July 24 and 26: Interstellar (2014) Aug. 1–2: Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986) Aug. 8–9: Contact (1997)This story was originally reported by Bring Me The News on May 31, 2025, where it first appeared.

Frozen yogurt stand to debut at the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden this summer

The latest exhibit hitting the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden is organic frozen yogurt. The Walker Art Center is welcoming Fro Yo Soul Sips and Snacks, which will take up residence at the home of Spoonbridge and Cherry daily beginning June 7. The treat purveyor was selected after a request for proposals was issued in 2024 looking for a company to complement the food options already offered at the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden. For more than a decade, the frozen yogurt-slinging shop has been posting up at festivals, food truck events, and art fairs around the Twin Cities. Now, it'll make the Walker its home for the summer, serving frozen yogurt with a variety of toppings, including fruit, granola, candy, and cookies. The Sculpture Garden's menu will also have local craft beer, wine, frozen lemonade, and other non-alcoholic and THC-infused drinks, as well as popcorn and hot dogs, which will be available in vegetarian and gluten-free options. 'We're honored to be part of the Sculpture Garden's legacy,' Fro Yo Soul co-founder Zack Rethlake says. 'We hope to be a spot where people connect over art, nature, and a swirl, snack and sip or two.' Fro Yo Soul will be open in the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden, a joint project from the Walker Art Center and Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily.

Movies to see this week: 'The Doors,' 'North By Northwest,' 'Hundreds of Beavers'

Showcases, a new midnight movie classic, and a chance to see one of the late Val Kilmer's best roles highlight the movie calendar this week. Here are the repertory movies you can catch around the Twin Cities during the week of May 21. Thursday, May 22, at the Walker Art Center The new film from Vera Brunner-Sung and producers Kazua Melissa Vang and Yeej, Bitterroot, has played in town a couple of times already, with screenings during the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Film Festival and last week at the Walker Art Center. This week, Vang and Yeej will curate a showcase of local Hmong artists and filmmakers, continuing some of the themes from their acclaimed film, which was shot in Missoula but featured talent from the Twin Cities Hmong community on-screen and in the production. 725 Vineland Pl., Minneapolis (free) Thursday, May 22, at Emagine Willow Creek Biopics on iconic musicians have become commonplace and are often a bit paint-by-numbers. The expected boredom has sullied expectations for the subgenre, even when there are thrilling examples of the form out there, like Oliver Stone's The Doors. The late Val Kilmer fully embodies Jim Morrison, singing, moving, and looking like him. The movie moves quickly at times, tracing Morrison's life from film school up through his death at 27 in Paris. 9900 Shelard Pkwy., Plymouth ($12.59) Saturday, May 24, at The Parkway Theater Hundreds of Beavers feels like what might have happened if a silent film director from the 1920s grew up on Adult Swim cartoons and made a Bugs Bunny-inspired comedy. With almost no spoken dialogue, a 19th-century fur trapper is tormented by rabbits, woodpeckers, raccoons, fish, and geese out on the frontier. Worst of all are the beavers, of which, you may have guessed, there are hundreds. With intentionally absurd special effects, he goes to war with a deluge of men in beaver costumes. It's already becoming a midnight movie classic, even though it really only hit theaters in 2024. 4814 Chicago Ave., Minneapolis ($16.73–$20) Sunday, May 25, at Emagine Willow Creek Park Chan-wook (Oldboy, Thirst) doesn't pull punches in his films. Rather, he tends to set you up for a few final jabs that can be brutally stunning. That's the case in The Handmaiden, which starts as a dark drama when a Korean girl is hired to be the handmaiden to a rich Japanese heiress. The young woman, however, is actually a thief who has been hired to rob and seduce the heiress. Things get twisted and messy. 9900 Shelard Pkwy., Plymouth ($12.59) Monday, May 26, and Wednesday, May 28, at Heights Theater The Hitchcock Festival at the Heights Theater is long gone, but there's still more from the master of suspense coming up. Some of Alfred Hitchcock's most iconic films have scenes that burn so brightly in memory that those scenes stand in for the entirety of the film and can obscure their greatness. North By Northwest can feel that way. Roger Thornhill (Cary Grant) gets mistaken for a government agent by a group of spies. It looks like a simple case of mistaken identity, but things go wrong over and over, pulling him deeper and deeper into danger. That includes falling for Eve Kendall (Eva Marie Saint). It's tense and delightfully frustrating every step of the way, especially if your memory of the movie is a bit obscured by its iconic plane scene. 3951 Central Ave. NE, Columbia Heights ($19–$19.75)More movies screening this week in the Twin Cities: May 21: 28 Days Later (2002) at Alamo Drafthouse, AMC Southdale, Emagine Willow Creek, and Oakdale Cinema May 21: Cooley High (1975) at Alamo Drafthouse May 21: Kiki's Delivery Service (1989) at AMC Inver Grove, Emagine White Bear, Oakdale Cinema, Parkwood Cinema, St. Michael Cinema, and West End Cinema May 21: Labyrinth (1986) at Emagine Eagan, Emagine Lakeville, and Emagine White Bear May 21: The Wiz (1978) at AMC Southdale, Oakdale Cinema and West End Cinema May 21: Fresa y Chocolate (Strawberry and Chocolate) (1993) at The Main Cinema, part of the Minnesota Cuban Film Festival May 21: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) at Edina Mann Theatres May 21: Pride & Prejudice (2005) at St. Michael Cinema May 21: The Unborn II (1994) at The Trylon Cinema May 21: Moonstruck (1987) at The Parkway Theater May 21: Crossroads (2002) at Alamo Drafthouse May 21: Tall Tales (2025) at The Main Cinema May 22: Hmong Filmmaker Showcase at Walker Art Center May 22: Making Mr. Right (1987) in 35mm at The Trylon Cinem May 22: Phffft (1954) at Heights Theater May 22: Gather (2020) at Minneapolis Institute of Art (free) May 22: The Apartment (1960) at Grandview Theatres May 24: Star Wars: Episode VI - The Return of the Jedi (1983) at The Parkway Theater May 24: Hundreds of Beavers (2022) w/ costume contest at The Parkway Theater May 24: The '80s Action Extravaganza II: The Quickening at The Trylon Cinema May 24: The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) midnight screening at The Parkway Theater May 25: Larry McDonough Quintet Jazz Music + Movie Series presents Miles Ahead (2015) at The Parkway Theater May 25: The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (2005) at Roxy's Cabaret May 25–27: Young Frankenstein (1978) at The Trylon Cinema May 25: The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (2005) at Roxy's Cabaret May 25 and 28: Blazing Saddles (1974) at Emagine Eagan, Emagine Lakeville, and Emagine White Bear May 25: Bree Way: Promise Witness Remembrance at Minneapolis Institute of Art May 25 and 29: Twilight (2008) at Grandview Theatre May 26: Terminating Mystery Movie at Alamo Drafthouse May 26 and 28: Jaws (1975) at Alamo Drafthouse May 26: Silver Bullet (1995) at Emagine Willow Creek May 27: The Vourdalak (2024) at Alamo Drafthouse May 27: The Man Who Fell to Earth (1976) in 35mm at The Parkway Theater

Walker Art Center unveils slate of free summertime events

The Walker Art Center is ready for the move to outdoor events. In addition to unveiling dates for its Skyline Mini Golf late last month, it has revealed its slate of free summertime events, which includes the return of Sound for Silents. The annual movie event on the Walker's hillside commissions a new score for silent films, which are performed in the late summer outside the institution. On Aug. 14, filmmaker Philip Harder (who was behind Prince's "Cinnamon Girl" and the Low documentary Cue the Strings—a Film About Low) will collaborate with the ensemble of singer/songwriter Matt Arthur to present new music to films from the Walker's Ruben/Bentson Moving Image Collection. Other events throughout the summer include events for the Walker's Free Thursday Nights, which opens the museum to all visitors every Thursday from 5–9 p.m. It'll also host events around its ongoing Free First Saturday series, which opens the galleries and puts on family-friendly events on the first Saturday of each month. Concerts to see this week: The Hold Steady, Nick Cave, Munson Fest

As May arrives, the next few weeks — before the outdoor concert series and summer festivals — are absolutely packed with splashy concerts. We'll do what we can to help sort things out. Here's what's happening on Twin Cities stages this week. Thursday, May 1, at Walker Art Center The prolific art rock group will have a one-of-a-kind performance at the Walker Art Center, celebrating more than three decades as a group. For this show, they'll play a song from each of their 20 studio albums, includign early albums like The Man, The King, The Girl, their breakthrough records in the early '00s (Apple O', Milk Man, Friend Opportunity), and more recent releases like 2023's Miracle-Level. Thursday, May 1, at Hook and Ladder Cornbread Harris is a true Twin Cities music scene legend. Even just a couple years shy of 100, Harris continues to hold down a weekly residency at Palmer's Bar and play elsewhere around town regularly. He'll celebrate his 98th birthday with a lineup of friends at Hook and Ladder. Sunday, May 4, at The Armory The Australian songwriter has released nearly 20 albums since going "solo" in the '80s. He's a singular voice, evolving repeatedly during his career. Last year's Wild God saw the group step back toward the bombastic with more rock 'n roll songwriting following a couple of ethereal and grief-filled records. Cave, Warren Ellis, and co. will do "an evening with"-style performance at The Armory with no opener and plenty of time to dive bounce around the groups discography. Other shows on the tour have had a solid dose of tracks from Wild God, but left plenty of time for older favorites and even a couple of songs from Grinderman albums (Cave and Ellis' band with a little more hard rock edge). Thursday, May 1, at The Fitzgerald Theater John Munson — a Minnesota musician who has played in groups like Semisonic, Trip Shakespeare, The Twilight Hours, and The New Standards — suffered a stroke in late February. Since then, friends and fans have raised more than $137,000 to support his recovery and medical expenses. This week, a benefit concert, dubbed Munson Fest, will continue that support with a one-night festival-style concert featuring Chan Poling and Steve Roehm of The New Standards, Aby Wolf, Matt Wilson and His Orchestra, The Dust of Suns, Dylan Hicks, and others. Sunday, May 4, at The Fitzgerald Theater The Japanese songwriter and multi-instrumentalist crafts enveloping atmospheres, whether it's folkier ballads or the more expansive sonic experiences that fill Luminescent Creatures, the album she released earlier this year. Aoba says the new record was inspired by sea creatures encountered while diving in the waters of a remote island, and the album feels like a plunge into an ethereal, mysterious new world. Thursday, May 1—Sunday, May 4, at 7th St. Entry, First Avenue, and Fine Line The New York band that was (loosely) born from the demise of the Twin Cities-based Lifter Puller is celebrating the 20th anniversary of their breakthrough album, Separation Sunday. It's a four-night run of underplays, starting with a show at 7th St. Entry. That's followed by two nights at First Avenue and a finale at Fine Line. In between, there's a trivia get-together and other celebratory activities. For the many Hold Steady fans around the state, it's a unique chance to see them on a smaller stage just months after singer Craig Finn headlined a solo show at The Fitzgerald on Monday, April 28: Awolnation with Bryce Fox at First Avenue L.S.
