‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians' Sets Season 2 Premiere, Casts Fan-Favorite Roles for Season 3
Camp Half-Blood relocated to San Diego Thursday, bringing a slew of announcements about Percy Jackson and the Olympians. The cast and showrunners of the Disney+ series appeared at Comic-Con for a panel that included news about the coming second season, as well as a key piece of casting for season three, which the streamer ordered shortly after filming on season two wrapped earlier in the year. More from The Hollywood Reporter From 'South Park' to George Lucas' First Comic-Con: Inside the Most Anticipated Panels Disney+ Sets Release Date for K-Drama Tentpole 'Tempest' Starring Gianna Jun, Gang Dong-won Gabby Windey to Host Alex Cooper's 'Love Overboard' Reality Dating Series For starters, Percy Jackson author and series co-creator/executive producer Rick Riordan announced in a video message that season two, based on Riordan's second Percy Jackson book, The Sea of Monsters, will premiere Dec. 10. The session also featured the debut of a teaser trailer for the coming season, including the first look at Daniel Diemer as Tyson, the cyclops who befriends Percy (Walker Scobell), and a very brief glimpse at a chariot race at camp. Watch it below. Executive producer Craig Silverstein said of the race, 'The chariot track is the most amazing set I've been on in my whole career. It's going to be a sequence that blows you guys away because it blew me away.' Moderator Timothy Simons, who guest stars as Tantalus in season two, joked that 'I've never been on anything that had a fire budget.' Riordan also announced — to screams from the crowd in Hall H — that the show has found actors to play the fan-favorite roles of Nico and Bianca di Angelo, two young demigods who will become part of the story in the third season. Levi Chrisopulos will play Nico and be a series regular, and Olive Abercrombie will have a recurring role as Bianca. Chrisopulos has appeared on stage in a touring production of Peter Pan and guest-starred on CBS' FBI in 2024. Abercrombie's TV credits include Mayfair Witches and Outer Range. Production on season three, which is based on The Titan's Curse, is slated to begin soon. Along with Scobell and Diemer, the Comic-Con panel featured castmembers Leah Sava Jeffries, Aryan Simhadri, Charlie Bushnell and Dior Goodjohn and executive producers Jonathan E. Steinberg, Dan Shotz and Silverstein. Steinberg and Shotz are the showrunners of Percy Jackson and the Olympians. They executive produce season two with Silverstein, Rick Riordan, Rebecca Riordan, Bert Salke, The Gotham Group's Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, Jeremy Bell and D.J. Wait, is that a Hans Zimmer-fied fantasy cover of a Styx song in this Percy Jackson Comic-Con teaser?
Let's start by saying this: We mean no disrespect to Percy Jackson and any Olympians he might be associated with. The Disney+ show's first season, which debuted back in late 2023, was breezy entertainment that held a lot of respect for Rick Riordan's original books, and there's no reason to think the second—which got advertised heavily at a San Diego Comic-Con Hall H panel today—will be any different. But we have to take, as a basic stance of principle, this: If your big teaser trailer is trying to milk some of its emotional power from a 'badass,' 'epic' cover of a song like Styx's 'Come Sail Away,' you may risk the danger of the whole thing coming off a little goofy. That's right: Walker Scobell's Percy is set to sail The Sea Of Monsters, and there's apparently no better way to underscore these nautical adventures than by playing a briefly-heard cover of the prog rock hit. The lyrical part of the song only plays for like two seconds, admittedly, but that was enough to immediately distract us from pretty much everything else the trailer is doing. (Showing off a cyclops, teasing some romantic entanglements with Leah Sava Jeffries' Annabeth, and reminding us the series has folks like Lin-Manuel Miranda, Jason Mantzoukas, and Kristen Schaal on speed-dial, basically.) It's just really hard not to hear 'Come sail away, come sail away' in any context, and not get immediately dropped into a progressive rock mindset, no matter how many pounding Hans Zimmer drumbeats you put behind it. In addition to the teaser, Riordan also popped up at the panel (via a video message) to announce some new tidbits of casting for the show's already-announced third season, revealing that Levi Chrisopulos and Olive Abercrombie will play Nico and Bianca di Angelo, the kids of Hades, in the yet-to-be-filmed season. There was also plenty of talk between cast members Scobell, Jeffries, Aryan Simhadri, and more, focused on their latest adventure, in which Percy will have to recover the Golden Fleece to save Camp Half-Blood, possibly while listening to a really sweeping orchestral cover of 'Mr. Roboto.' The second season of Percy Jackson And The Olympians debuts on December 10. More from A.V. 'Percy Jackson': Check out Fairview actor's scenes in Season 2 trailer
SAN DIEGO – Percy Jackson is setting sail for a second season of monstrous adventure, with some new blood coming along for the voyage. The series stars Fairview Township's Walker Scobell as the titular Percy, the son of Poseidon. A Comic-Con panel for the Disney+ series 'Percy Jackson and the Olympians' premiered a Season 2 teaser that featured a ton of action and the first look at Tyson, the fan-favorite cyclops from Rick Riordan's book series. In a video message, Riordan announced the new season will premiere on Disney+ December 10. This next chapter finds Percy embarking on a quest to the Sea of Monsters to find his kidnapped best friend Grover (Aryan Simhadri). He's also seeking the Golden Fleece – a mystical artifact that can heal anything and anyone – in order to save his home, Camp Half-Blood, from the villainous likes of Luke (Charlie Bushnell) and Titan Kronos (Nick Boraine). Join our Watch Party! Sign up to receive USA TODAY's movie and TV recommendations right in your inbox While they're on the march to take down Olympus, Percy gets help on his odyssey from pals Annabeth (Leah Sava Jeffries) and Clarisse (Dior Goodjohn) as well as his half-brother Tyson (Daniel Diemer). Riordan also announced a few young Season 3 newcomers. Levi Chrisopulos and Olive Abercrombie will play Nico di Angelo and his sister Bianca, the demigod children of Hades (Jay Duplass). The first season was 'an American road trip,' said executive producer Jon Steinberg, and in Season 2, 'you are in the fantasy, and magic is in every direction. Anything is possible, and it's an adventure form start to finish.' He also teased a chariot race track built for a 'massive' sequence that was 'the biggest thing we've ever shot, practically.' That moment also impressed Timothy Simons, who plays Camp Half-Blood activities director Tantalus. 'I'm used to being on shabby comedies,' said the "Veep" and "Nobody Wants This" actor. "I've never been on anything that had a fire budget.' Simons also got to pet and feed a horse: 'It was an incredible day.' Cast members revealed where their characters are heading in the Season 2. Grover has 'never been alone,' Simhadri said, and when he's captured, it's the first time 'he doesn't have people to rely on. He has to step up and fend for himself, and that's something we've never seen from him.' Jeffries said Annabeth, the child of Athena who was rather stoic in the first season, will 'be vulnerable and open up' to Percy on their journey. And Goodjohn touted a larger role for Clarisse, the daughter of god of war Ares. While she's 'a one-dimensional bully' in the book series, Goodjohn said that the new season digs into the 'traumatic experiences' that made Clarisse who she is, in a 'beautiful arc.' As a newcomer, Diemer had 'the time of my life' playing the powerful, innocent and deeply lovable Tyson. Coming in as a fan who grew up on Riordan's books, 'the whole idea was to create a cyclops baby with a huge heart but dealing with the complexity of his past.' Simhadri admitted one of his favorite bits in Season 2 involves him wearing a wedding dress, while Scobell and Diemer reminisced about doing the iconic 'Titanic' scene while filming on an ironclad, with Scobell holding his co-star's waist while Diemer flung his arms out, Kate Winslet-style. 'It brought us closer,' Scobell quipped. Diemer replied: 'Very different from the brotherly relationship. It was nice.' There were some big changes during the long break between seasons (the first ended in January 2024). Simhadri joked he 'grew a few feet," while Scobell added, 'It's nice to take a lot of time away and grow and experience real life again and then come back and film.' Scobell, 16, still has to attend school during production. He remembers one day filming a big battle scene where he was the only actor who needed to go to class. 'Everyone would be fighting, and there were all these cries for help and pain. And in my mind, I'd be trying to kill this dude,' he recalled. 'I'd be in school (later) and I'd still hear that, people begging for their life. It's a weird thing to switch off.'
