Bill Maher Finds Common Ground With Donald Trump: 'Kernel of a Good Idea'

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Comedian Bill Maher touted some common ground with President Donald Trump during his Friday evening TV show, saying the White House's targeting of Harvard University is a "kernel of a good idea." Maher described the elite Ivy League institution as an "a**hole factory," and said he'd long been critical of the university. Newsweek has reached out to Harvard and the White House via email for comment on Saturday morning. Why It Matters Maher has been a consistent Trump critic, routinely mocking the president for years on his HBO show Real Time with Bill Maher. At the same time, while the comedian continues to identify as a Democrat, he often criticizes the "woke" views of many in his political party. He also regularly invites Republicans on his show, and in late March had dinner with Trump at the White House. After the meeting, Maher spoke favorably of the president's personal interactions with him, sparking criticism from many liberal critics. Trump's recent actions against Harvard have drawn backlash from Democrats and other critics. However, Maher has suggested some agreement with the president on the issue. What to Know During his Friday evening show, Maher hosted CNN anchor Jake Tapper and Representative Seth Moulton, a Massachusetts Democrat, on his panel. During the discussion, the comedian brought up the Trump administration's actions against Harvard. "The Harvard situation. Trump has declared full scale war on Harvard. And like so many things he does, there's a kernel of a good idea there. I mean, I've been s****ing on Harvard long before he was," Maher said. Tapper jumped in, quipping, "Well, you went to Cornell [University], so I mean...." "That's not why," Maher responded, with the exchange drawing laughter from the audience and the comedian. "No, it's because Harvard is an a**hole factory in a lot of ways, that produces smirking f*** faces." He then asked Moulton, "Are you from Harvard?" To which Tapper pointed out that the Democratic congressman has "three degrees from Harvard." "Present company accepted," Maher quickly added. More Dia Dipasupil/FilmMagic/Saul Loeb/AFP/Getty Images How Trump Is Going After Harvard The dispute between Trump and Harvard University began earlier this year when his administration accused Harvard of failing to adequately address antisemitism on its campus, citing "pro-terrorist conduct" at protests. The administration responded by freezing more than $2 billion in federal research grants to Harvard in April and has since attempted to terminate the university's ability to enroll international students through the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP). The State Department is now also investigating the B-1 (business visas) and B-2 (tourist visas) associated with Harvard University, according to Fox News. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) made moves to eliminate Harvard's student visa program, saying the university had refused to comply with a request to provide behavioral records of student visa holders. Trump, meanwhile, has demanded the names and countries of origin of all international students, saying that federal support entitled the government to such information. He wrote on Truth Social last Sunday: "We want to know who those foreign students are, a reasonable request since we give Harvard BILLIONS OF DOLLARS." Harvard insists it has complied with government requests, "despite the unprecedented nature and scope of the demand." On Thursday, U.S. District Judge Allison Burroughs stepped in and issued a preliminary injunction, which stopped the Trump administration from revoking the school's SEVP certification without first following the legally mandated procedures. What People Are Saying President Donald Trump to reporters on Wednesday: "Harvard's got to behave themselves. Harvard is treating our country with great disrespect. And all they're doing is getting in deeper and deeper and got to behave themselves, you know. I'm for the for Harvard. I want Harvard to do well. I want Harvard to be great again, probably, because how could it be great? How could it great." Harvard President Alan M. Garber in a statement after a court win this week: "This is a critical step to protect the rights and opportunities of our international students and scholars, who are vital to the University's mission and community. Many among us are likely to have additional concerns and questions. Important updates and guidance will continue to be provided by the Harvard International Office as they become available." Senator John Kennedy, a Louisiana Republican, on X, formerly Twitter, on Friday: "Harvard's attitude is, 'We can do what we want, and we have a constitutional right to your money.' I think they're wrong, and I think they're going to find out how wrong they are." Fox News contributor Jessica Tarlov, a Democrat, wrote on X on Thursday in response to attacks on Harvard: "When you deport young people and cancel the visas of their friends, you become public enemy number one very quickly." Representative Seth Moulton wrote on X on Wednesday: "Trump's sad obsession with schools he doesn't like continues. These policies will mean that we are less competitive, less credible, and less innovative in the future. Nobody wins." What Happens Next? The Trump administration's actions targeting Harvard continue to be litigated in the courts.

Marilyn Manson Misses Charting His First No. 1 Hit — Again

Marilyn Manson's 'In the Air Tonight' opens at No. 2 on the Official Physical Singles chart in the ... More U.K., narrowly missing the top spot after selling out its limited run. BEVERLY HILLS, CALIFORNIA - FEBRUARY 09: Marilyn Manson attends the 2020 Vanity Fair Oscar Party hosted by Radhika Jones at Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts on February 09, 2020 in Beverly Hills, California. (Photo by) Despite serious allegations of abuse and multiple court cases, Marilyn Manson's fanbase has remained steadfast and stuck by his side for years now. The rocker has largely evaded facing consequences for multiple accusations, and is once again on the path to musical stardom. He demonstrated his continued popularity with Assassination Under God – Chapter 1, his latest album, which arrived in late 2024. That set produced a handful of successful singles in the rock space, and now the controversial musician is back with another tune. Manson recently released a cover of "In the Air Tonight" by Phil Collins. His take on the pop/rock classic is predictably darker thanks to the fact that he added his own twist to the cut, and that move seems to have resonated with many of his followers. The track was issued as a CD single and made available in extremely limited quantities, as only 4,000 copies were produced. There was clearly interest in new work from the rocker, as the song sold out almost immediately. In the United Kingdom, "In the Air Tonight" appears on three rosters that track pure purchases. It opens highest on the Official Physical Singles chart, which makes sense, given Manson's focus on the CD format. The tune starts at No. 2, just missing out on opening in the top spot. Only one tune, "It's Amazing to Be Young" by Fontaines D.C., kept Manson from hitting No. 1. That cut vaults from No. 78, where it debuted the previous frame, to the top spot. Manson has never reached the summit on the Official Physical Singles chart, though he's come close before. In 2020, he peaked at No. 2 with his version of the American folk song "God's Gonna Cut You Down." Looking at his discography, Manson has landed five tracks inside the top 10 on that tally out of 17 total appearances. "In the Air Tonight" also manages to become a bestseller on two other rankings. It launches at No. 15 on the general Official Singles Sales chart and comes in at No. 37 on the Official Singles Downloads tally. That performance shows that fans of the rocker preferred to buy the track in a physical format, rather than downloading it on platforms like iTunes.

Donatella Versace's Fashion Legacy As She Celebrates Her 70th Birthday

BEVERLY HILLS, CALIFORNIA - MARCH 02: Donatella Versace attends the 2025 Vanity Fair Oscar Party ... More hosted by Radhika Jones at Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts on March 02, 2025 in Beverly Hills, California. (Photo by Taylor Hill/FilmMagic) On Friday, May 2 2025, Donatella Versace turns 70. One of the most prominent luxury designers in the industry, Donatella took the helm of her brother's luxury fashion house when, on July 15, 1997, he was shot dead outside his Miami residence, Casa Casuarina, on his return from a morning walk. As the fashion world mourned, Donatella (who'd been responsible for diffusion line Versus since 1989), took over as creative director overnight and later became chief creative officer, a role she has excelled at until April this year, when, after much speculation, Prada Group acquired the Versace brand for €1.25bn ($1.38bn) from the fashion conglomerate Capri Holdings. According to the Guardian newspaper, writing in April 2025, while the luxury fashion market has been facing a significant slowdown, the Prada Group has enjoyed success, reporting revenues of €5.4bn in 2024, 17% higher than the previous year. This increase was partly attributed to Miu Miu's success, which has almost doubled its profits this year, hitting close to £1bn in sales. Despite the age difference —Gianni Versace was eight years older than Donatella— the two were especially close and had a significant influence on each other. He persuaded her to bleach her hair blonde when she was just eleven, inspired by the Italian pop star Patty Bravo, a look she still sports today. (Photo by Rose Hartman/) When their mother died in 1978, Donatella left Florence University to join her brothers in Milan (her brother Santo took care of the business finances). She became Gianni's right-hand woman, muse, and strongest critic. She offered him a female perspective, daring him to go shorter or bolder. She took the reins and decided that the show had to go on, never giving up, and showed tremendous courage when, three months later, she presented her first collection, the Spring/Summer 1998 show, as usual at the courtyard of Via Gesu in Milan. Gianni's contemporaries offered support as they watched in the audience: Donna Karan, Giorgio Armani, Angela Missoni, Miuccia Prada, and Gianni's his mentor Karl Lagerfeld. And on the front row, a string of celebrities, including Cher, Boy George, and Demi Moore, sat watching. A neon sign opened the show. It read: 'This show is dedicated to our brother Gianni's love of work and to our entire staff, whose incredible love and devotion were so precious to our brother and mean so much to us. We thank each and every one of them.' While respecting her brother Gianni's house codes, the silk prints, the Byzantian crosses, the colors in the iconic 'Pop' collection, the racy, sexy dresses and the spirit of rebellion that came with breaking barriers, she added her own, softer stamp to the fashion house. She also had a very clear vision for the brand, which kept her at the top of her game, and had a business awareness that went beyond the sketching pad. Together with Gianni, she had been instrumental in creating the concept of the supermodel in the 1990s and always had a sixth sense for product placement and for connecting with the right celebrities at the right time. It celebrated his work and life, showcased his enormous talent, and was shown at Milan's Triennale museum. In an impressive finale, as soon as the last model walked off the runway, the lights went down, the music faded and a DJ announced: 'Gianni this is for you''. A curtain was then unveiled at the back of the room, revealing Gianni's favorite models, Helena Christensen, Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Claudia Schiffer and Carla Bruni, dressed in archetypal Versace gold metal mesh long dresses. The dress was such a sensation and so many people searched for it online that it crashed the internet, prompting Google to launch the Google Images search feature. The green dress, originally seen on Amber Valetta on the runway, was redesigned twenty years later for Spring/Summer 2020. This time, at the end of the show, Lopez stepped onto the catwalk wearing the new version of the jungle dress and later walked hand in hand and with Donatella as they received a standing ovation. (Photo by) Another highpoint was Fendace, a collaboration between Versace and Fendi, when Silvia Venturini Fendi and Kim Jones (who was creative director of the house at the time) as 'team Fendi', and Donatella Versace swapped roles and created something new for the pre-fall 2022 show that closed the Milan Fashion Week. Fendace produced a fun collection of 50 looks, with plenty of logos, oroton (chain mail) and silk scarves with caps displayed by a stellar cast that included Amber Valletta, Kate Moss and her daughter, Lila Moss Hack, Naomi Campbell, Gigi Hadid and Precious Lee. Donatella's new post is that of chief brand ambassador, allowing her to oversee the red-carpet dressing and champion the Versace brand and its values. In a press release from Capri Holdings Limited, Donatella Versace said she was excited to see Versace through new eyes. 'It has been the greatest honor of my life to carry on my brother Gianni's legacy. He was the true genius, but I hope I have some of his spirit and tenacity. In my new role as Chief Brand Ambassador, I will remain Versace's most passionate supporter. Versace is in my DNA and always in my heart.' If history is anything to go by, we will see Donatella excel in her new role and bask in the glory of her legacy – one of great taste but also ample courage, strength and defiance in the face of adversity.
