On Friday, May 2 2025, Donatella Versace turns 70. One of the most prominent luxury designers in the industry, Donatella took the helm of her brother's luxury fashion house when, on July 15, 1997, he was shot dead outside his Miami residence, Casa Casuarina, on his return from a morning walk.
As the fashion world mourned, Donatella (who'd been responsible for diffusion line Versus since 1989), took over as creative director overnight and later became chief creative officer, a role she has excelled at until April this year, when, after much speculation, Prada Group acquired the Versace brand for €1.25bn ($1.38bn) from the fashion conglomerate Capri Holdings.
According to the Guardian newspaper, writing in April 2025, while the luxury fashion market has been facing a significant slowdown, the Prada Group has enjoyed success, reporting revenues of €5.4bn in 2024, 17% higher than the previous year. This increase was partly attributed to Miu Miu's success, which has almost doubled its profits this year, hitting close to £1bn in sales.
Despite the age difference —Gianni Versace was eight years older than Donatella— the two were especially close and had a significant influence on each other. He persuaded her to bleach her hair blonde when she was just eleven, inspired by the Italian pop star Patty Bravo, a look she still sports today.

When their mother died in 1978, Donatella left Florence University to join her brothers in Milan (her brother Santo took care of the business finances). She became Gianni's right-hand woman, muse, and strongest critic. She offered him a female perspective, daring him to go shorter or bolder. From 1989, she was responsible for the diffusion line Versus, and throughout the nineties, they worked very closely together.

After Gianni's sudden death in 1997, his elder brother, Santo, became CEO of the company, and Donatella took over as creative director. She took the reins and decided that the show had to go on, never giving up, and showed tremendous courage when, three months later, she presented her first collection, the Spring/Summer 1998 show, as usual at the courtyard of Via Gesu in Milan.
Gianni's contemporaries offered support as they watched in the audience: Donna Karan, Giorgio Armani, Angela Missoni, Miuccia Prada, and Gianni's his mentor Karl Lagerfeld. And on the front row, a string of celebrities, including Cher, Boy George, and Demi Moore, sat watching. A neon sign opened the show. It read:
'This show is dedicated to our brother Gianni's love of work and to our entire staff, whose incredible love and devotion were so precious to our brother and mean so much to us. We thank each and every one of them.'
While respecting her brother Gianni's house codes, the silk prints, the Byzantian crosses, the colors in the iconic 'Pop' collection, the racy, sexy dresses and the spirit of rebellion that came with breaking barriers, she added her own, softer stamp to the fashion house. She also had a very clear vision for the brand, which kept her at the top of her game, and had a business awareness that went beyond the sketching pad. Together with Gianni, she had been instrumental in creating the concept of the supermodel in the 1990s and always had a sixth sense for product placement and for connecting with the right celebrities at the right time.

Some of the highlights in Donatella's career include Versace's Tribute collection for Spring/Summer 2018, marking the twentieth anniversary of Gianni's death, considered one of the most memorable shows in fashion history to date. It celebrated his work and life, showcased his enormous talent, and was shown at Milan's Triennale museum. In an impressive finale, as soon as the last model walked off the runway, the lights went down, the music faded and a DJ announced: 'Gianni this is for you''. A curtain was then unveiled at the back of the room, revealing Gianni's favorite models, Helena Christensen, Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Claudia Schiffer and Carla Bruni, dressed in archetypal Versace gold metal mesh long dresses.

Her Spring/Summer 2000 tropical prints collection showcased the legendary green plunging 'jungle dress' that Jennifer Lopez wore to the 2000 Grammy Awards ceremony. The dress was such a sensation and so many people searched for it online that it crashed the internet, prompting Google to launch the Google Images search feature. The green dress, originally seen on Amber Valetta on the runway, was redesigned twenty years later for Spring/Summer 2020. This time, at the end of the show, Lopez stepped onto the catwalk wearing the new version of the jungle dress and later walked hand in hand and with Donatella as they received a standing ovation.

Another highpoint was Fendace, a collaboration between Versace and Fendi, when Silvia Venturini Fendi and Kim Jones (who was creative director of the house at the time) as 'team Fendi', and Donatella Versace swapped roles and created something new for the pre-fall 2022 show that closed the Milan Fashion Week. Fendace produced a fun collection of 50 looks, with plenty of logos, oroton (chain mail) and silk scarves with caps displayed by a stellar cast that included Amber Valletta, Kate Moss and her daughter, Lila Moss Hack, Naomi Campbell, Gigi Hadid and Precious Lee.

Now that Prada has taken over Versace, Dario Vitale, previously the image director at Miu Miu, has replaced Donatella as Chief Creative Officer (a role she held for 27 years), effective from April 1, 2025. Donatella's new post is that of chief brand ambassador, allowing her to oversee the red-carpet dressing and champion the Versace brand and its values. In a press release from Capri Holdings Limited, Donatella Versace said she was excited to see Versace through new eyes. 'It has been the greatest honor of my life to carry on my brother Gianni's legacy. He was the true genius, but I hope I have some of his spirit and tenacity. In my new role as Chief Brand Ambassador, I will remain Versace's most passionate supporter. Versace is in my DNA and always in my heart.'
If history is anything to go by, we will see Donatella excel in her new role and bask in the glory of her legacy – one of great taste but also ample courage, strength and defiance in the face of adversity.

Why Giada De Laurentiis 'cried' because of disgraced ex-Food Network star Mario Batali

Giada De Laurentiis is slamming disgraced chef Mario Batali. The former Food Network star appeared on Samah Dada's "On the Menu" YouTube show and detailed how she wanted the now-embattled Batali to pen the foreword for her debut cookbook "Everyday Italian" released in 2005. "This is a person we're not supposed to talk about, but we're going to," De Laurentiis teased during the episode about Batali, once one of the most famous Italian chefs in the world. De Laurentiis told Dada that she asked Batali to write the foreword because he was "a legend in the Italian space" and she "felt like his stamp of approval would've been huge for me." Mario Batali exits restaurant business 15 months after sexual misconduct allegations But the "Giada at Home" alum said she "cried" when she read it "because I realized, 'Oh, he's basically saying that I've gotten to where I've gotten, and I've had this little bit of success that I had, because I have big boobs, and that if he had boobs, he would even be much further.'" USA TODAY has reached out to reps for Batali for comment. "He wrote that in the foreword?" Dada asked. "Yes," De Laurentiis said, adding that Batali did it "because I'm, like, a joke, right? Like, to him, it was like a little bit of a joke." After reading it, De Laurentiis called her editor "in tears" and said, "Clearly, I can't use this. So now what do I do?" Her editor chose to have the foreword rewritten and sent to Batali for approval. "That's basically what a lot of people figured. Cute girl with big boobs, so that's why they're watching her," De Laurentiis claimed people thought about her rise to fame. In 2023, De Laurentiis left her longtime home at the Food Network and now works primarily on her buzzy Italian food company Giadzy. In the published version of "Everyday Italian," Batali still made references to De Laurentiis' appearance, writing that she caught his eye while he was watching the Food Network and stopped on her show of the same name. "The first thing I noticed was that everything on the screen was beautiful — both the host and the food, which looked delicious and real and natural," Batali wrote. "Then I noticed that she really knew what she was talking about. And I realized that despite her movie-star looks, Giada isn't on television because she's merely attractive; she's a real Italian girl who can cook," Batali continued. "I was hooked." He also wrote that "it turns out that Giada is smart, Italian-speaking, and family-oriented — the three qualities my grandma hoped I'd find in a girl to marry. (Too late for that.) She's also a great cook, highly knowledgeable about food, and a huge amount of fun to be around — the three qualities I'd hope to find in a television partner." Mario Batali admitted to sexual harassment of multiple women Batali's downfall began in 2017 when the food website Eater New York posted a story featuring allegations by multiple anonymous women, including claims that he had groped their breasts or buttocks. "I apologize to the people I have mistreated and hurt," Eater quoted him as saying at the time. "Although the identities of most of the individuals mentioned in these stories have not been revealed to me, much of the behavior described does, in fact, match up with ways I have acted." "That behavior was wrong and there are no excuses," Batali continued. "I take full responsibility and am deeply sorry for any pain, humiliation or discomfort I have caused to my peers, employees, customers, friends and family." Reports of his alleged sexual misconduct prompted police investigations. The internationally recognized chef was well-known to the general public after producing a plethora of cookbooks, launching a popular line of pasta sauces, opening his restaurants and making frequent TV appearances. He starred on the Food Network series "Molto Mario" and boasted a co-host gig on the now-cancelled ABC daytime show "The Chew," which also featured chefs Carla Hall and Michael Symon, wellness expert Daphne Oz, and "What Not to Wear" alum Clinton Kelly. Will Smith, Jada Pinkett's daughter Willow, 24, sparks concern with explicit crying selfie

Fans are sounding the alarm after Willow Smith posted a bizarre crying selfie with a sexually explicit message. Will Smith and Jada Pinkett's 24-year-old daughter sparked worry after she took to her Instagram Story on Wednesday to share the strange photo. The 'Meet Me At Our Spot' singer, who's signed to Jay-Z's Roc Nation label, shared a close-up selfie with tears streaming down her face and included a shocking caption that read, 'Who ate all the p—y.' 11 Willow Smith's crying selfie and raunchy message sparked worry. Instagram/Willow Willow has been open about her sexuality, coming out as bisexual in 2019 and later polyamorous. But the weeping photo caused her over 11 million fans on social media to express worry over her well-being. 'Is she ok? She does not seem like she's ok,' one person reacted on X. 'Lmaooo Willow Smith funny asf bc are you ok?!?!?' another worried fan stated. 11 Willow Smith later claimed she was trolling her fans — but her follow-up video didn't settle their concerns. Instagram/Willow 11 Willow Smith called her worried fans 'dense.' Instagram/Willow Some attacked Will and Jada's parenting and questioned the Smith family as a whole. 'Will Smith and Jada have utterly failed as parents,' someone wrote. 'Why tf this family always crying,' asked a second. 'Their family is so weird ngl,' shared a third. Others immediately thought Willow was trolling her followers. 11 She also claimed that her followers 'forgot funny existed.' Instagram/Willow 'Can we stop taking the Smith kids so seriously? 'I feel like the main foundation is the freedom to be able to create a relationship style that works for you and not just [to be] stepping into monogamy because that's what everyone around you says is the right thing to do. 'So I was like, how can I structure the way that I approach relationships with that in mind? Also, doing research into polyamory, the main [reason] …why divorces happen is infidelity,' she added. Her famous parents married in 1997; however, in 2016, Jada dropped a bomb when she admitted she and Will had been living separate lives for at least seven years. 11 Will Smith, Jada Pinkett Smith, Jaden Smith, Trey Smith and Willow Smith celebrate Trey Smith's 21st birthday in Vegas on November 10, 2023. WireImage Despite their different paths, a slapping scandal and an 'entanglement' with a different partner, the actress vowed they would never get divorced. 'I made a promise that there will never be a reason for us to get a divorce – we will work through whatever and I just haven't been able to break that promise,' Jada said in the 2023 interview. 'We live separately.'
