East Bay school official arrested on suspicion of having sex with underage student

An administrator at an East Bay charter school was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of having sex with an underage student, authorities said. Gerard Flaherty, a 43-year-old Pleasant Hill resident, was arrested at about 10:15 a.m. and booked into Martinez Detention Facility with no bail, the Walnut Creek Police Department said. Police did not immediately release further information, citing the ongoing investigation. Flaherty is the climate and culture supervisor at the Contra Costa School of Performing Arts in Walnut Creek, according to the school's website. He has been employed by the school since July 2023, according to his LinkedIn profile. Catherine Foster, the school's executive director, said Thursday in a statement to the Chronicle that Flaherty was put on leave and directed all inquiries about the investigation to the police. 'Creating a safe learning environment for our students is the top priority,' she said.

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Police are investigating after a driver was killed when he crashed in the early hours of Saturday in Walnut Creek. The crash, involving a Tesla, occurred around 2:40 a.m. on Ygnacio Valley Road when the driver struck a tree just west of North Main Street. Officials said the driver died at the scene. No other occupants were inside the car. The driver was identified as an adult male. The Walnut Creek Police Department declined to release any more information about the victim or the nature of the crash until the victim's family are notified.

(KRON) — A scam has been circulating social media about a report of a missing police officer, causing confusion among Walnut Creek residents, according to the Walnut Creek Police Department (WCPD). The department made the announcement Thursday, referring to a scam that says 28-year-old officer Kate McArthur went missing. WCPD said the post is a scam and is not accurate, adding that the department did not send out this alert. 'This post in its entirety is not accurate and was not created or sent out by the Walnut Creek Police Department,' WCPD wrote on social media. 'Please do not click on any links or additional information that is associated with this post, as it is a scam.' Longtime North Bay brewery, restaurant to close after 30 years The scam post appears to have been posted in a public Facebook group 'Walnut Creek/Concord Homes for Sale or Rent.' As of Thursday evening, the post WCPD alludes to appears to have been taken down. WCPD did not mention if McArthur is a member of the department. Walnut Creek police urge residents to not click on any links or give out additional information in association with that post. 'As a reminder always verify any information before sharing or engaging with content seen on social media. (KRON) — Many Bay Area Tesla showrooms are preparing for another day of protests Saturday. In Walnut Creek, they are expecting close to 1,000 demonstrators Saturday. Walnut Creek police say the protest has grown steadily each Saturday since it first started back in February. They say all of them have been peaceful with no arrests. Lt. Scott Moorhouse of the Walnut Creek Police Department told KRON4, 'We have very good lines of communications with one of the main organizers, so we talk weekly and talk ahead of the event. And their goal is to share their voice but not break any laws and not be too impactful on the businesses other than the one they're protesting.' Witnesses sought in Walnut Creek hit-and-run that injured juvenile on bicycle

(KRON) — The Walnut Creek Police Department is looking for any witnesses to a Friday morning hit-and-run collision that injured a juvenile riding his bicycle. Piedmont Cybertruck crash driver was driving at 'high rate of speed,' under the influence, said CHP Walnut Creek PD said the incident happened at 7:50 a.m. when the victim was riding eastbound in the area of Geary Road and Buena Vista Avenue. Police said the suspected vehicle made a right turn onto Buena Vista Avenue, hitting the victim in the bike lane and knocking him to the ground. Police said the car did not stop and was last seen heading southbound on Buena Vista Avenue. The victim suffered minor injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital. Police said the victim is a white boy with blonde hair who was wearing a gray helmet, light gray sweatshirt, black pants, and riding a brown colored bicycle. There was no description provided for the wanted vehicle or its driver.
