Eda Ezrin's freedom hopes dim as Thai prosecutors appeal drug case
KOTA BARU: Dikir barat singer Eda Ezrin is unlikely to be released next week, as Thai prosecutors are expected to file an appeal in her drug case and those of five other Malaysians. The prosecution is seeking to fix a trial date before the appeal period ends on Aug 6, sources told NST. "The prosecutors have brought the appeal to the central court and are expected to refer the case back to the original court — the Narathiwat Provincial Court for a retrial," said the sources. The sources said the prosecution is likely to open a new case file against all six individuals but the nature of the new charges remains unclear at this point. In March, the Narathiwat Provincial Court acquitted Eda Ezrin and five others of possession of methamphetamine pills. The decision was made by a panel of two judges in a 30-minute trial at the court. For the drug consumption charge, the judge handed each of them a six-month jail sentence and a fine of 4,000 baht (RM526). However, they were not required to serve the jail sentences or pay the fines as they had already been held in Narathiwat Prison for more than four months. Eda Ezrin whose real name is Wan Norshaheeda Azlin Wan Ismail, along with five others were arrested in Sungai Golok last November. However, the prosecution filed an appeal and was granted a five-month extension, which is set to expire next month. The case has drawn public attention in both Thailand and Malaysia, with legal observers watching closely as the deadline for the appeal approaches in eight days.

Eda Ezrin's drug case moved to Songkhla Court of Appeal
PETALING JAYA: The drug case involving popular Kelantan singer Eda Ezrin, or Wan Norshaheeda Azlin Wan Ismail, 30, along with her husband and four friends, has been transferred to the Court of Appeal in Songkhla. According to sources, the decision was made at the request of the Thai prosecutor as the singer of 'Bae Soba Bae', her husband, and four friends are currently detained at Narathiwat Provincial Prison awaiting further legal proceedings. Sinar Harian reported on June 5 that the fate of Eda Ezrin, her husband, and four friends may be determined by the Supreme Court of Thailand. Citing a spokesperson for the Narathiwat Provincial Court stated that this situation is not impossible based on previous cases. "With the large quantity of drugs seized... yes, this case is expected to be brought to the Court of Appeal, and possibly even to the Supreme Court. It will certainly take years to resolve. If acquitted, they will all be free; if guilty, all will be imprisoned. "Many drugs were seized but no one confessed. This is what the prosecutor will prove. If one or two admit, the others will be freed," he said. Previously, Sinar Harian reported that Eda Ezrin, along with her husband and four friends, were released from prison after being acquitted of charges of possessing 6,059 methamphetamine pills found in a hotel room in Golok on November 1 last year. The decision was made by a panel of two judges after reviewing all prosecution witness testimonies during three days of case mention proceedings on Feb 11, 13, and 14. However, all the Malaysians returned to Narathiwat Provincial Prison despite being acquitted of possessing 6,059 methamphetamine pills on Thursday June 29). This action allows the prosecution to appeal the court's decision to acquit all the Malaysians. Eda Ezrin's defence lawyer, Sufian Abdul Aziz, stated that the prosecutor could file an appeal within one to four months.
