Islam doesn't promote hatred, SIS tells Terengganu govt
A signboard warning against homosexuality put up by the Kuala Terengganu City Council. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : A women's rights group today questioned the Terengganu government's defence of a signboard warning against homosexuality, saying Islam does not promote hatred. In a statement, Sisters in Islam (SIS) said the religion instead promotes counsel, reflection, and moral responsibility guided by compassion. It also said the Quran commands Muslims to invite others to the path of God with wisdom. 'Promoting hatred, especially in areas frequented by the youth and university students, sows fear, stigma, and possibly violence. 'This is not dakwah – this is dangerous,' it said. SIS's comments followed reports of a signboard erected by the Kuala Terengganu City Council warning against homosexuality. The signboard features two male stick figures holding hands, surrounded by flames and a crossed-out heart. It also features a Quranic verse and a message condemning same-sex relations. State executive councillor Wan Sukairi Wan Abdullah defended the signboard, saying it was aimed at getting the public to 'hate' homosexuality. However, SIS said the verse used to condemn homosexuality was meant to describe a particular behaviour in a specific historical context, and was not blanket instruction for public punishment or hate campaigns. 'Weaponising verses to justify hatred while ignoring verses that uphold justice, mercy, and humility is a bias of Islam's balanced teachings,' it said. It also questioned the intent behind the enforcement of several religious policies in Terengganu, asking if they reflected genuine Islamic values. SIS said the state's policies appeared to be increasingly focussed on publicly controlling personal behaviour, especially that of Muslim women and marginalised groups. 'What is the true intention behind these policies? Are they grounded in Islamic ethics or an increasingly politicised and punitive interpretation of religion?'

Inciting hatred of 'dirty' homosexuality is the point, says Terengganu exco member
KUALA TERENGGANU: The Terengganu government does not deny that the messages on a warning signboard regarding homosexual practices installed in several strategic locations in the state are indeed intended to instil hatred towards such acts among the community. State local government, housing and health exco Datuk Wan Sukairi Wan Abdullah said the action was part of an effort to educate the people to stay away from things that go against religious values and societal norms. "We really want the people to hate homosexual acts. We want them to consider it dirty, wrong and to be avoided. "Signboards like this are part of an effort to brighten up the city's atmosphere with Islamic symbols," Sinar Harian quoted him as saying on Saturday (May 10). Wan Sukairi was commenting on a report by a local news portal which questioned the existence of a prohibition sign related to homosexuality near Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT). He added that the installation of the sign provides a constant reminder to the public, especially in areas that are popular with young people, including institutions of higher learning (IPT). "We are targeting the IPT area because there are many young people there. "This message is important so that they do not get caught up in negative things," he added. Wan Shukri stressed that each local authority (PBT) in Terengganu can choose a different delivery style, but the purpose remains the same, which is to educate and prevent. The move received criticism from several parties, including transgender activist Nisha Ayub, who described it as a form of institutionalised discrimination and a dangerous endorsement of hatred.

Vape sales to be banned across Terengganu starting August
Published on: Friday, April 25, 2025 Published on: Fri, Apr 25, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: Terengganu is set to ban the sale of vape products statewide from August 1, in a bid to protect youth from potential health risks, the state government announced. — Reuters pic KUALA TERENGGANU: The Terengganu government will ban the sale of electronic cigarette (vape) products at all premises throughout the state starting August 1. State Local Government, Housing and Health Committee chairman Datuk Wan Sukairi Wan Abdullah said the decision, made at Wednesday's state executive councillors' meeting, was a proactive measure to curb the sale and use of vape products, which may have negative health effects on the younger generation. "Among the agreed decisions is that the state government will maintain its existing policy of not approving a business licence for any premises selling vape products, in line with the by-laws in effect across all local authority areas in Terengganu. "Business licence conditions will also be refined to ensure the vape sales ban can be fully enforced," he said in a statement last night. Wan Sukairi stated that any vape business operators who continue selling after the ban takes effect will face strict action under Local Government Act 1976 (Act 171) bylaws, including fines, seizures and court action. To demonstrate commitment and firmness, the state has also decided not to accept any form of sponsorship from vape manufacturers or distributors for any events involving the state government, he added. "A three-month grace from May 1 to July 31, 2025 will be provided before full enforcement begins on August 1, including actions related to vape business advertisements. "To support affected vape operators, the state, through the Entrepreneur Development Foundation (YPU), will offer participation in entrepreneurship courses as well as other business opportunities in more sustainable and safer sectors," he said. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
