Terengganu firm on vape sales ban despite appeals
State local government, housing and health committee chairman Datuk Wan Sukairi Wan Abdullah said the state government had given ample early notice of the ban and provided sufficient time, about seven months, before enforcement began.
"We've given enough time for traders to clear their vape stock before their premises are no longer allowed to sell such products," he said, adding that excuses from some traders claiming they still have unsold vape products will no longer be accepted.
He was speaking to reporters after the launch of the National Month and Fly the Jalur Gemilang Campaign for Terengganu, officiated by Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar at Wisma Darul Iman here on Wednesday (Aug 6).
He said that in line with the vape sales ban, all banners or advertisements related to vape products, including for events or those sponsored by vape companies, must be taken down across the state.
Wan Sukairi said the enforcement aims to protect the people of Terengganu, especially the younger generation, from the harmful effects of vaping. - Bernama

Ahmad Zahid said the Seberang Perak area, covering more than 3,400ha and cultivated using modern methods by Felcra, has shown encouraging performance with an average yield reaching eight metric tonnes per hectare annually. 'We expect production to exceed 27,000 metric tonnes of padi, equivalent to over 16,000 metric tonnes of rice per year, which can meet the needs of thousands of families. Hopefully, this becomes an example for other padi farmers,' he said at the 2025 First Interim Distributable Profit Declaration Ceremony for Felcra Bhd participant projects here yesterday. Also present were Deputy Minister of Rural and Regional Development Datuk Rubiah Wang and Felcra Bhd chief executive officer Datuk Idris Lasim. Ahmad Zahid said Felcra Bhd recorded a profit of RM178mil between Jan to April 2025, an increase compared to the previous year. Of this amount, RM101mil will be distributed to 74,300 participants nationwide in stages. 'I congratulate Felcra Bhd for successfully maintaining a strong performance, with an increase of nearly RM2mil compared to the same period last year. I will be monitoring the profit distribution to all participants across the country,' he said. Idris said the strong performance of the first interim distribution for 2025 was due to several key factors, including efficient estate management and the implementation of cost-saving measures. 'Through effective approaches in the use of fertilisers, pesticides and farm inputs, operational costs were reduced by 15% and yield per hectare increased by 49%,' he said. Idris also said Felcra's palm oil projects recorded an average net profit increase of 81%. While profit distribution rates are influenced by crude palm oil price trends, he said improvements in estate performance remain the primary determining factor.

Sarawak to discuss education autonomy at MA63 talks
KUCHING: Education autonomy for Sarawak will be among the main agendas at the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) Technical Committee meeting, says Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof (pic). The Deputy Prime Minister said among the aspects of education sought by Sarawak in the meeting, which will be held today, is the approval to use English as the medium of instruction, especially in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). 'The main challenge lies in the national policy that sets uniformity in terms of curriculum and language. 'However, one of the approaches that can be considered is to maintain the existing policy with additions, such as the Dual Language Programme (DLP) that is currently being implemented in Sarawak,' he told reporters after attending the Bicara Eksekutif Madani programme here yesterday, Bernama reported. Fadillah said among other matters to be discussed is the cancer centre in Sarawak to ensure better access to healthcare for the people in the state. Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian was previously reported as saying that the proposed centre is expected to have at least 310 beds to meet long-term patient care needs. Fadillah said the figure is higher compared to the initial proposal of 200 beds discussed in a meeting last April, with the increase suggested following recommendations from medical experts and health officials involved in the project.

Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong in his National Day Rally (NDR) speech said that the redevelopment will ensure more efficient and secure clearances, as well as shorter wait times and smoother traffic. bootstrap slideshow 'The SEZ has great potential for both sides to tap on complementary strengths and grow together. To maximise this potential, we must improve cross-border connectivity,' he said on Sunday. He said that today, the Causeway is the busiest land crossing in the world, which gets even more congested during weekends and holidays. To provide a long-term solution to this chronic congestion, the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) had previously announced it was redeveloping and extending the Woodlands Checkpoint (WCP) in phases over the next 10 to 15 years. Under Phase 1, ICA will build an extension of WCP at the Old Woodlands Town Centre, with construction work for this phase scheduled for the third quarter of 2025. This extension, among others, will include new automated clearance facilities for cargo vehicles, arriving cars, and arriving motorcycles. Wong also informed that the Johor Bahru–Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link, which will connect directly to Woodlands North MRT Station in Singapore, is set to ease cross-border travel.
