Drug overdose death in Washington Parish caused by ‘new substance,' sheriff's office says

WASHINGTON PARISH, La. (WGNO) — The Washington Parish Sheriff's Office is warning the public of a new drug doing damage in their area. Deputies said the drug, Xylazine, is a 'deadly' new controlled substance responsible for at least one overdose death in the parish. The drug consists of a large animal veterinary tranquilizer reportedly being mixed with other injectable narcotics to enhance its effects. Cantrell administration stuns city council after refusing payments to school board Deputies say Xylazine is a powerful sedative like fentanyl, that can be fatal in small doses. Unlike fentanyl, Narcan has no effect after the drug's use. The sheriff's office adds that little can be done for anyone who overdoses on the substance. Currently, deputies are working to prosecute drug dealers for second-degree murder when their product is used in an overdose death. 'But that is only one piece of the puzzle. The problem won't truly be solved until the demand for these drugs has also been curtailed. That requires a community-wide effort to identify, support, and help those dealing with drug addiction,' said WPSO deputies. Three hospitalized in St. Tammany Parish boat accident WPSO is asking that anyone who knows someone struggling with drug addiction to call them. 'The days of recreational drug use are over. The extremely powerful narcotics being mixed with other substances are giving users very high, often fatal, doses.
