Murder investigation launched after female motorist killed on R300

A 41-year-old female was shot and killed on the R300 highway when she was changing her tyre. Image: Independent Newspapers Archives A woman was shot in the neck and killed along the R300 on Saturday night in yet another brazen highway hit near the deadly N2 "Hell Run". The 41-year-old woman had reportedly just finished changing her tyre when she was gunned down inside her car. Police found her slumped behind the wheel and she was declared dead on the scene by paramedics. Police spokesperson, Wesley Twigg, confirmed they are investigating a case of murder. 'The circumstances surrounding a shooting incident on Saturday evening at about 20:22pm, on the R300, where a 41-year-old female was shot and fatally wounded are under investigation. 'Police members attended the crime scene where they found the victim inside the vehicle with a gunshot wound to her neck. 'The victim was declared deceased on the scene by paramedics. The motive for the attack forms part of the police investigation.' He added that no personal belongings were taken and that the suspects are still on the loose. Meanwhile, Freedom Front Plus councillor Emre Uygun said the party is shocked that the incident happened so close to the notorious Hell Run. 'This horrific incident also follows closely on the heels of a similar case of attempted murder involving a female motorist that the party had recently highlighted in a press release this week. 'The Freedom Front Plus strongly condemns these brazen and violent attacks on female motorists, which demonstrates a clear disregard for human life.' The 41-year-old victim was found slumped inside her car by police and declared dead on the scene. Image: File The party is demanding that the national, provincial and local government hold an emergency meeting to come up with a proper plan to tackle the growing violence on the N2 and R300. The Cape Argus sister newspaper, Daily Voice previously reported on a couple who were ambushed on the N2 Hell Run while heading to Cape Town International Airport. Uygun added: 'According to reports, Sanral's monitoring system recorded over 200 crime-related incidents on the N2 and R300 in Cape Town in 2023, including stone-throwing and robbery targeting motorists. 'It is alarming that the closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras on this stretch of road are non-functional, and visible policing is clearly inadequate.' The party said Sanral, SAPS and metro police must take action, including fixing broken cameras to catch the suspects and keep motorists safe, especially near the airport. McDonald's drive-through in Durbanville turns into crime scene

A peaceful night turned harrowing for families at a McDonald's in Durbanville when armed robbers targeted two vehicles in the restaurant's drive-through lane, leaving victims injured and traumatised. The incidents unfolded last Saturday at the New Street McDonald's, where two separate armed robberies took place within 20 minutes of each other, sparking outrage over fast-food outlet security in Cape Town's northern suburbs. Shortly after 19:00, a man and his young son were ambushed while placing an order. As the father leaned out of the window, a suspect struck him in the face with a revolver, while another approached and fired shots. The terrified father told his son to lie flat in the back seat as the assailants made off with his wallet and cellphone. After reversing out of the lane, the victim reported the crime at Durbanville Police Station and was later treated in hospital for facial injuries and shock. R500 worth of transactions were allegedly made on his bank cards before he could cancel them. A woman described how her mother-in-law had also been targeted just 20 minutes prior. While waiting in the same drive-through, three men smashed her car window and attempted to rob her. She managed to escape by sounding the hooter and driving off, unharmed. Sergeant Wesley Twigg confirmed that a case of armed robbery is under active investigation. Colonel Gonum Munsamy, station commander, labelled the incidents as high-priority and urged the public to share any information that could assist. Families have voiced serious frustration over McDonald's alleged inaction. Staff at the branch reportedly did not contact police, leaving victims to report the crimes themselves. Repeated attempts to engage McDonald's management and corporate offices have so far gone unanswered. Police are appealing to anyone with information to contact Crime Stop at 08600 10111 or use the MySAPS app to submit tips anonymously. 'We're just grateful they weren't killed,' said the wife of one victim. 'But this could've ended much worse, and it's unacceptable that businesses are not doing more to protect their customers.' Elsies River parents fear for children's safety after deadly daytime shootings

A 27-year-old man was gunned down in an alleged gang-related shooting. Elsies River parents are concerned about the safety of their children after two separate shooting incidents in the middle of the day left three people dead on Wednesday. Communities such as Eureka Estate, Clarke Estate, Uitsig, Ravensmead and surrounding areas have been under siege from continuous gun violence. School learners had to scramble to safety when a 27-year-old man was gunned down in an alleged gang-related shooting in Gladiola Street at 2.10pm when returning from the shop. Earlier in the day, two people aged 30 and 40 years were also gunned down in a drive-by shooting in Eureka Estate around 12.30pm on the corner of 40th and 42nd Avenue. Residents are fearing for their lives and one parent is hoping that her kids will stay indoors during the school holidays as the gangsters run riot on the streets. The parent said: 'I am a bit relieved that the schools are closing, but we still have people who need to go to work early and come back safe. 'When they are not shooting, they are targeting the cars, smash-and-grab and throwing cars with stones.' Another added: 'They shoot at any time. I have to fetch my children from school and be vigilant always because they don't care if it is children or adults, they shoot. 'We stay in the house but we are still not safe because bullets travel and we need to go to the shop and they like standing on the corners.' Police say that additional boots on the ground have been deployed in the Ravensmead policing precinct. Police spokesman Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi reported: 'Ravensmead police responded to a complaint on Wednesday June 18 2025. Upon their arrival in Gladiola Street at about 2.10pm, they found the body of a man who sustained a gunshot wound. 'The victim was declared deceased on the scene by the medical personnel. Reports suggested that the victim returned from a local spaza shop when an unknown gunman opened fire, fatally wounding the 27-year-old man. 'The motive for this attack is believed to be gang-related. The unknown suspect fled the scene and is yet to be arrested.' Of the drive-by shooting, Sergeant Wesley Twigg said that SAPS detectives are investigating two counts of murder. He confirmed: 'Police members responded to a complaint of a shooting and upon arrival on the scene they found the victims with gunshot wounds to their bodies. Both victims were declared deceased on the scene...' According to reports a white Toyota Corolla drove up to the victims and opened fire. Cape Argus
