HS2 works to shut key Birmingham route overnight as drivers warned of diversions

A major route in and out of Birmingham is set to close due to HS2 works. Planned HS2 works will close Lawley Middleway overnight from August 15 to 23, West Midlands Roads has warned. Drivers have been warned they will need to follow a fully signed diversion if they plan to travel along the stretch after 10pm from next week. HS2 explained that the closure is due to the launch of Lawley Middleway Bridge, which is set to form a "key part" of the route that will carry High Speed trains over Lawley Middleway and into Curzon Street Station. Drivers have been told that work is taking place in August during the school holidays while the road network is "typically quieter." A fully signed diversion will be in place but motorists have been warned to plan ahead to minimise disruption. An HS2 spokesperson said: "In August 2025, we'll launch the Lawley Middleway Bridge a key part of the route that will carry High Speed trains over Lawley Middleway and into Curzon Street Station, right in the centre of Birmingham. "The majority of our work has been conducted off-line. "However, to further minimise our impact on road users, we will only be working at night and during the school holidays when the road network is typically quieter. "To ensure the safety of all road users, Lawley Middleway will be closed nightly from Garrison Circus to Curzon Circus between 10:00 PM and 6:00 AM, starting from 15 August until 24 August."

M6 closure as emergency services called to crash

A section of the M6 has closed following a lorry crash near Wolverhampton. National Highways said the lorry had hit the central reservation barrier on the northbound carriageway at around 07:45 GMT on Saturday. The M6 northbound is now closed from Junction 10 to Junction 10A of the M54, with one lane southbound also closed due to central barrier damage. Traffic monitoring group West Midlands Roads said on X that the lorry had jack-knifed and there was debris at the scene. A statement from the group said: "Congestion approaching closure. Expect additional traffic on A454 Black Country Route as traffic diverts." National Highways said a lamppost from within the central reservation had been torn down in the collision and there was a substantial oil spillage, adding its crews were working to treat the spillage. West Midlands Fire Service is in attendance, alongside police and paramedics. Transport analytics company Inrix said there were long delays from J10 A454 Black Country Route (Wolverhampton / Walsall) to J10A M54 J10A, due to the jack-knifed lorry. It added that there was congestion to J8 of the M6 (Rayhall and M5 Interchange). A diversion is in place, with Inrix saying: "From J10 use the A454 towards Wolverhampton - A4150 Wolverhampton Ring Road - A449 Stafford Road for J2 M54 and then A5 Watling Street for J12 M6."
