Convicted killer on parole arrested at New York dog park, police say

There's outrage in a New York community after a man convicted of murder and released on parole was arrested again. Robert McCain is back behind bars after he was paroled four decades after the murder of 16-year-old Paula Bohovesky in Pearl River. McCain was arrested Wednesday after an alleged incident at the Town of Cortlandt Dog Park in northern Westchester County. Police said he was chatting with a woman when he suddenly forcibly touched her. McCain is one of two men convicted in the 1980 murder of Bohovesky and sent to prison. The teenage victim was grabbed off the street near an abandoned home and killed after leaving work at the Pearl River Library. "It's very heartbreaking. We used to have a business in Pearl River, so I do remember it very well," Fran Gudin, a Rockland County resident, said. McCain was released on parole four years ago, which angered the community at the time. Congressman Mike Lawler is among the many who actively opposed McCain's parole in 2021. "When you release somebody who is capable of committing such a heinous act, without any remorse ... That is only a matter of time before that individual offends again," Lawler said. Bohovesky's mother, who still lives nearby, said she was afraid McCain would re-offend after being released. "They'll probably let him back out again. It's not fair. The justice system is not where it should be," said Kathy Kivlehan, another Rockland County resident. McCain denied any involvement in Bohovesky's murder at his 2019 parole hearing, but the state moved to revoke his parole on Friday. He will spend the weekend at the Westchester County lockup before a court appearance next week.

GOP Rep. Mike Lawler will run for reelection, not for New York governor

NEW YORK — Republican Rep. Mike Lawler Wednesday announced he'll skip the New York governor's race and will instead run for reelection in his Westchester County-based swing congressional district. 'After months of deliberating over this and really working through it, I've decided the right thing to do for me and my family and my district is to run for reelection,' Lawler said. The two-term moderate Republican said he wants to help the GOP by running to hold onto the suburban swing district, which is considered one of the most competitive battlegrounds in the entire nation. 'I'm proud to run for reelection on my record and win next November and keep the House Republican majority,' Lawler added. Democrats mocked Lawler for chickening out of the governor's race, with Hochul tweeting that he 'doesn't have the spine to face me.' A crowded field of Democrats has already lined up for the chance to take on Lawler, whose NY-17 district is one of just three in the nation that elected a Republican to the House but backed Kamala Harris over Donald Trump. The challengers include Rockland County legislator Beth Davidson and Army veteran Cait Conley. Lawler was a key vote to pass Trump's unpopular Big Beautiful Bill, which included draconian cuts to health spending to fund outsized tax cuts for the rich. He claimed a side win in the bill by convincing Republicans to raise the cap on deducting SALT, or state and local taxes, to $40,000 from $10,000. Democrats say he welched on promises to eliminate it altogether. Lawler burst onto the political scene by toppling ex-Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney in the 2022 midterms in a race that featured a round of internal Democratic bickering following a redistricting battle that changed the district somewhat. In 2024, he easily turned aside a comeback effort from Democratic ex-Rep. Mondaire Jones, who held the seat previously. Lawler's decision is a boost to the no-holds-barred effort by President Trump and his Republican allies to hold onto their narrow House majority in the forthcoming midterm elections. The GOP holds a 219-212 edge, with four vacancies, three of which are in strongly Democratic districts. The party in power typically loses House seats in the first midterm elections after a president takes office, which would suggest a grim prognosis for the GOP, especially with Trump's approval ratings dipping into the low 40% range. But Trump is pushing Republicans to unilaterally redraw congressional district lines in states they control, most notably Texas and Ohio, which could yield close to 10 additional Republican seats. Democrats might counter by doing the same in blue states, potentially even New York, although the process looks legally trickier for them. Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-New York, could now be a frontrunner for the GOP gubernatorial primary race. Republicans will also be keen to defend her far upstate district, but it should be an easier lift as it voted for Trump by a margin of about 20 points in 2024.

NYPD officer stole from Wells Fargo customers' accounts, Westchester DA alleges

An NYPD officer is accused of grand larceny and identity theft in an alleged bank fraud that investigators say ran close to $90,000. The Westchester County district attorney's office says the rookie officer from Manhattan formerly worked as a Wells Fargo bank operations coordinator in Westchester County, New York and fraudulently accessed customer accounts. The officer, 27-year-old Yeison Rodriguez Acosta, made a brief of court appearance Thursday morning in suburban Rye. He is currently suspended without pay, according to an NYPD spokesperson. Defense attorney John Pappalardo declined comment after court. The district attorney's office said Rodriguez Acosta worked for the Wells Fargo branch in Rye Brook from March 2024 to September 2024. He's accused of using information he learned to steal more than $87,000 from 14 customers' accounts between May 2024 and June 2025. The district attorney's office alleges Rodriguez Acosta continued his conduct while at the NYPD's Police Academy in October 2024 and after his graduation in May 2025 when he was assigned to the 48th precinct in the Bronx. "The defendant's brazen conduct, as alleged, does a disservice to his colleagues in law enforcement, who wear the badge honorably and took the same oath to protect and serve," Westchester County District Attorney Susan Cacace said in a statement. "My administration will work to ensure that Mr. Rodriguez Acosta is held accountable for his alleged crimes and that the victims in this case are made whole." The 30-count criminal complaint includes charges of grand larceny, identity theft and fraud. CBS News New York's Tony Aiello was in court for Thursday's hearing and will have more on this developing story.

Parolee arraigned in Yonkers fatal shooting, held without bail

A Yonkers parolee is facing a murder charge following a fatal shooting in southwest Yonkers. Fidencio Abreu, 41, was arraigned in Westchester County Court on Sunday, July 13, on charges of second-degree murder and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, both felonies. He is accused of killing 35-year-old Francisco Vallejo with a single gunshot to the head following a dispute on Ludlow Street near Riverdale Avenue just before 2:30 a.m. Friday. Detectives took Abreu into custody late that morning at his home on Radford Street six blocks away. Charges were delayed while he was hospitalized for an undisclosed condition that police said was unrelated to the shooting or his arrest. Abreu is charged with weapon possession related to the shooting, as well as for a loaded 9mm semi-automatic ghost gun that was recovered at his home when he was arrested, according to the felony complaint. Authorities are awaiting the result of ballistics tests to determine if it was the same gun used in the shooting. New Rochelle Judge Michelle Bernstein, sitting as a county court judge, granted Assistant District Attorney Lana Hochheiser's request that Abreu be held without bail at the county jail. Defense lawyer Paul Hanft did not ask for bail and requested a felony hearing. That will be held in Yonkers City Court on Thursday unless prosecutors present the case to a grand jury by then. Abreu was paroled in July 2024 after serving six years for a 2016 attempted burglary in Larchmont, according to state and county records. He had previously served three other state prison terms for theft-related convictions.
