Birthday Special: From Omkara to Dil Chahta Hai- Revisiting Saif Ali Khan's best performances
While everyone was busy talking about the Khans, Saif was out here reinventing himself, over and over again. It's no wonder that we call him the coolest Khan! Saif Ali Khan is Bollywood's accidental chameleon. One minute he's wooing you with a guitar, the next he's plotting a bloodbath with a French beard and a whiskey glass. While everyone was busy talking about the Khans, Saif was out here reinventing himself, over and over again. It's no wonder that we call him the coolest Khan! From the floppy-haired cutie in 90s comedies, then swerved into Shakespeare, streaming, and zombie-hunting — all while somehow staying underrated. He just shows up, tries something weird, and leaves quietly with your respect. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Omkara (2006) This is the role that made everyone stop laughing at Saif's rom-com past. A scheming, limping villain with an Othello complex and pitch-perfect Western UP accent? The man devoured. It's Shakespeare meets Chambal, and Saif meets acting Nirvana. Dil Chahta Hai (2001) The lovable idiot friend with the world's worst luck in love? In a film that redefined male friendships in Bollywood, Saif played the golden retriever energy guy. While Aamir was brooding and Akshaye was emo before it was cool, Saif gave us comic timing, sweetness, and that all-time iconic 'Woh Ladki Hai Kahan' song. Being Cyrus (2005) Saif as a drifter with dead eyes and dangerous intentions in this off-kilter psychological drama? Sign us up. If you remember Being Cyrus, you know why the film deserved more awards than it got. Hum Tum (2004) He nagged, he whined, he sketched cartoons and we still rooted for him. In this gendered slow-burn rom-com, Saif managed to evolve from a petty man-child to a man-man without ever becoming annoying. He also picked up a National Award for it, because this is the chatty film that's a lot harder than it looks! STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Sacred Games (2018–2019) Existential dread, crumbling morals, and a very realistic cop first big Indian gamble was a gritty neo-noir that delivered, and Saif's Sartaj was its broken soul. Haunted by daddy issues, systemic rot, and Nawazuddin Siddiqui's chaos energy, Sartaj gave Saif his streaming-era rebrand. Also: great beard. Udaybhan Rathod – Tanhaji (2020) Historical villainy, but make it operatic. He went full throttle baddie – Bloodthirsty, unhinged, dramatic. It's the kind of fun performance that only Saif could've made it camp. Eyeliner, fur, slow-mo smirks, he knew what movie he was in. Go Goa Gone (2013) India's first zombie comedy and Saif's first bleach-blonde era, we remember both. He claimed to be Russian. He looked like he washed ashore from Ibiza. And he was surprisingly good at zombie combat. This cult comedy is one of the strangest things to come out of Bollywood and Saif leaned into the madness like a pro. Love Aaj Kal (2009) STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Two timelines. One heartbreak. And a whole lot of tears. In this Imtiaz Ali special, Saif played both modern commitment-phobic Jai and old-school romantic Veer. It was moody, musical, and mildly confusing, but he pulled off both avatars with restraint and charm. Also, don't act like you don't hum Dooriyan when it rains. Ek Hasina Thi (2004) He smiled. You trusted him. Mistake. This lean, mean revenge thriller had Saif playing against type, a smooth con man who gaslights Urmila Matondkar's character into hell. The turn is cold, clean, and absolutely chilling. Early-2000s noir that deserved way more love. Parineeta (2005) In this swoony, sepia-toned adaptation of Sarat Chandra's novel, Saif traded jeans for kurta-pyjamas and brought a brooding depth to the man. The chemistry with Vidya Balan was electric, and he looked painfully good playing the piano in vintage Calcutta.

Asian Athletics Championships: Gulveer Singh's last-lap surge gets India opening gold
File photo of Gulveer Singh. Armyman Gulveer Singh won the gold medal in men's 10,000m in challenging conditions on the first day of the Asian Athletics Championships in Gumi, South Korea. The hot and humid weather did not deter the Hangzhou Asian Games medallist from achieving this victory on Tuesday. By winning his first gold in a continental meet, Gulveer joined the elite company of Hari Chand (1975) and G Lakshmanan (2017) as the third Indian to clinch top honours in the men's 10,000m at this level. The 26-year-old from Western UP's Atrauli district completed the 25-lap event in 28:38.63s, a little way off his personal best of 27:00.22s set in March. He, however, failed to automatically qualify for the World Athletics (Tokyo, Sep 13–21). The automatic qualification mark was 27:00.00s. Gulveer had narrowly missed the timing at 'The Ten 2025' athletics meet in California where he had recorded his personal best. Athletes can qualify for the Worlds through the global ranking system too, and the gold in Gumi will significantly improve Gulveer's ranking. He has already qualified for the Worlds in the men's 5,000m event. Donate For Health Donate Now Undo I could have run faster but it was quite hot and humid during the race time. It was a challenging race. My coach had devised a strategy keeping the weather conditions in mind. I am happy that I successfully implemented it,' Gulveer told TOI from Gumi. 'The race was slower than expected but my focus was on securing a podium finish rather than targeting a specific time. I was confident about my sprint and I knew I could take the lead in the last lap.' Prior to his 9th-place finish in the men's 5,000m on his Diamond League debut in Doha this month, Gulveer had been training at the Colorado Springs centre in the US. The significant contrast between the cool, windy conditions there and the heat in both Doha and Gumi influenced his performance. Due to warm conditions, the local organising committee had installed a water station during the 10,000m track race. Gulveer said he conserved each ounce of energy for the last lap. Racing alongside Bahrain's Albert Kibichi Rop, who finished with 28:46.82s for bronze, added an extra layer of challenge for Gulveer. Kibichi was leading the Indian before the last lap but the latter overtook his rival midway with a final burst. Japan's Mebuki Suzuki beat Rop for silver. Sawan Barwal, the other Indian, finished fourth with a time of 28:50.53s. The men's 5,000m is scheduled for the last day (May 31) and all runners, including Gulveer, will get enough time to recover. Race Walker Sebastian Gets Bronze India's initial success of the day came through race walker Servin Sebastian, who earned a bronze medal in the men's 20km race walk in the morning session. The 26-year-old Army athlete clocked 1:21:13.90, a personal best on his debut at the continental level. 'It was a good race. I am happy to be among the medal winners in my first race at the continental,' he said. Sebastian has been consistent in his performance since the beginning of the 2025 season. In February, he won 20km race walk gold at the Uttarakhand National Games with a time of 1:21:23. His second gold came at the Indian Open race walking competition in April in Chandigarh. Amit, the second Indian race walker, finished fourth. Annu Rani Finishes Fourth, Tejaswin on Top in Decathlon Ace javelin thrower Annu Rani finished fourth with a throw of 58.30m. She had a series of 56.92m, no mark, 58.30m, 58.11m, 57.80m and no mark. China's Su Lingdan won the gold with a throw of 63.29m, with Japan's Sae Takemoto (58.94m) securing silver. National record holder decathlete Tejaswin Shankar was on top in the nine-man field after the completion of five events out of 10 on Tuesday. Not Saif Ali Khan, THIS actor was first choice for Langda Tyagi's role in Omkara, got rejected due to..., his name is... In 2006, director Vishal Bharadwaj decided to adapt Shakespeare's Othello and give it his touch, creating Omkara. After a lot of brainstorming, the makers finalised Ajay Devgn as the lead. However, recently, Omkara's writer Robin Bhatt, explained that after finalising Ajay Devgn and Kareena Kapoor for the lead roles, they were in a pickle when it came to casting Langda Tyagi, as there were two superstars interested in portraying that part. Aamir Khan was first offered Langda Tyagi's role in Omkara In a conversation with Friday Talkies, Robin explained, 'Aamir was ready to do the villain's role. The second choice we had was Saif Ali Khan. However, at one point, we decided that Aamir was not the right choice for the film.' Langda Tyagi's role than eventually landed in Saif Ali Khan's kitty, but there was a challenge! Robin revealed that Saif wasn't familiar with the local language of Western UP, where the entire film was set. But, he was eager to give his best and put a lot of efforts into the character. He went through several changes including cutting his hair and hiring a tutor to improve his dialect. He recalled, 'Saif's problem was the language required here. But then he started going for tuitions, he started training with another, chopped his hair.' Saif practiced a lot to get into the skin of the character. It was quite a different character from what he usually played before. Well, his hard work indeed paid off, as he impressed not just director Vishal Bharadwaj, but masses as well with his dark villainous performance. His portrayal of Langda Tyagi is considered one of his best roles till date. After Omkara, Saif gradually ventured doing more serious roles, taking on risks with every new character.
