Former AEW talent recalls his conversation with Triple H before debuting in WWE
Via WWE: Triple H as the CCO of WWE On this week's episode of What Do You Wanna Talk About?, former Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes welcomed his longtime friend Ricky Saints, previously known as Ricky Starks in AEW. Many fans expected Saints to join Rhodes in WWE as soon as possible, especially after a year filled with backstage rumors, frustrated interviews, and other drama. Earlier this year, Saints finally debuted in NXT, and during the podcast, he shared the story of how his move to WWE came together, including a pivotal phone call from Chief Creative Officer Paul 'Triple H' Levesque. Ricky Saints reveals his detailed call with Triple H Saints recalled the moment, saying, Triple H had called him just when he got off a flight to Seattle. He didn't know the number, and it didn't say Stamford [Connecticut, where WWE is headquartered] or anything for him to know who is this? He continued, 'So Hunter calls me. And he asked me, 'Hey, would you want to come in? We're interested, blah, blah, blah. We would love to have you, you're talented, X, Y, and Z.' And I was like, 'Oh yeah, sure, hell yeah.'' As the conversation unfolded, Saints struggled to hear Triple H over the noisy airport. Right as Ricky was getting on the tram, HHH said something about Raw or SmackDown. Then Saints actually had his ears focused, asking, 'Wait, what? What did you say?' And I was so scared to say, 'Hey, can you repeat yourself?' Basically, what he was saying was, 'Hey, we're not going to put you on Raw or SmackDown just yet,' but it could have been anything. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas For Sale in Dubai Might Surprise You Dubai villas | search ads Get Deals Undo I was like, 'Okay, sweet.'' Although Saints might not have minded starting on the main roster, a major highlight was the chance to meet NXT's head, Shawn Michaels . Saints was like, 'Of course I will. Like, yes, I would love that.' That's all I really wanted is just resources. I feel like I'm a rough diamond that just needs a little polishing,' Saints explained. He emphasized the unique opportunity at WWE's Performance Center in Orlando, where talent can refine their skills under top coaches like Michaels. Unlike AEW, which focuses on immediate output due to its newer structure, WWE's setup allows for long-term development. He wasted no time and joined WWE just a day after his AEW contract ended. Ricky Saints talks move to WWE, Cody's group chat and backstage heat | What Do You Wanna Talk About? Now, Saints is honing his craft with Michaels and the Performance Center team, preparing for a Falls Count Anywhere match against NXT North American Champion Ethan Page at Great American Bash this Saturday. 'I Didn't Derail His Career': Kevin Owens Reveals WWE Storyline He Refused
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Kevin Owens has revealed he once rejected a significant WWE storyline pitch. The plan would have seen him introduce Damian Priest as his new best friend. Owens discussed the situation on Cody Rhodes' podcast, What Do You Wanna Talk About? He explained why he refused to go along with the proposed angle. WWE Pitched A New Alliance For Kevin Owens The creative pitch came in late 2020 during the pandemic era. At the time, Owens was in a heated feud with the Universal Champion, Roman Reigns. Speaking to Rhodes, Owens recalled how WWE officials approached him. They told him the plan was for him to get help against The Bloodline. "They come tell me, 'Well, things are kind of changing now. You're going to be introducing your new best friend to help you take on The Bloodline, because it's the numbers game,'" Owens said (H/T to Inside The Ropes). When he asked who the friend was, he was told it was Damian Priest from NXT. Owens immediately had reservations about the pairing. He cited the stark differences in their on-screen characters at the time. "I go, 'Well, I have nothing against him but no one would believe that we're best friends. We cannot be more opposite, and why? It's so random,'" Owens explained. He referred to Priest as "The archer... the guy who does the fake arrows?" He believed the pairing made no sense in the context of his intense feud with Reigns. The pitch was made about three weeks before his Last Man Standing match with Reigns at the 2021 Royal Rumble. Owens was focused on that match and felt the storyline was firing on all cylinders without the addition. Ultimately, Owens refused the pitch and the storyline never happened. He continued his feud with The Bloodline alone. Owens' 2025 has been defined by his continued war with The Bloodline and a significant injury. He started the year allied with LA Knight, challenging Solo Sikoa and Tama Tonga, which led to a violent street fight at the Backlash France event where The Bloodline was victorious. Following this, Owens entered the King of the Ring tournament, advancing to the semi-finals before being defeated by the eventual winner, GUNTHER. After the tournament, it was revealed that Owens has been working through a legitimate knee injury. He is currently on hiatus from WWE television to recover from his injury. Cody Rhodes And Brandi Rhodes Address AEW Departure
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Cody Rhodes, a foundational figure in the launch of All Elite Wrestling and a former WWE Champion, recently opened up alongside his wife, Brandi Rhodes, about the portrayal of their departure from AEW in early 2022. Speaking on the premiere episode of Cody's podcast, What Do You Wanna Talk About?, which debuted this week, the couple briefly touched upon how they felt the narrative surrounding their exit was handled. Cody and Brandi were a huge part of AEW's formation in 2019, with Cody serving as an Executive Vice President and Brandi as the Chief Branding Officer. Their decision to leave the company after three years was a big moment in the wrestling landscape, leading to Cody's eventual return to WWE at WrestleMania 38. While they didn't delve deeply into all the specifics of their departure on the podcast, Cody suggested their story was altered after they left. "We're not gonna get too far into it, but when we left the alternative promotion, we were also slightly rewritten," Cody stated. He then added that they "[We] were portrayed very Dark Knight-esque." More news: WWE News: Steve Austin Reveals Real-Life Vince McMahon Confrontation This "Dark Knight-esque" allusion refers to the 2008 Batman film, where the hero takes the fall for crimes to protect the city's image, becoming a hunted figure despite his heroic deeds. Cody seemed to imply a similar scenario where their public view was shaped into a more villainous or misunderstood light following their AEW exit. Brandi Rhodes, also present on the podcast, appeared to embrace this darker portrayal with a touch of humor. "No. Believe it all for me. Let the darkness in. Just enhances my beauty. I'm like the wicked stepmother or something," Brandi commented, playing into the "Dark Knight-esque" comparison. Bayley has now opened up about her early days in WWE. She spoke about the struggles she faced and how WWE legend AJ Lee helped her in a big way. That moment helped Bayley grow and build the character that fans loved for years. Bayley's match with AJ Lee fueled the "Hugger" movement Bayley did not plan to become the 'Hugger.' In a chat on Insight with Chris Van Vliet , she shared: by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 2025 Top Trending local enterprise accounting software [Click Here] Esseps Learn More Undo "It was actually my match with AJ, we were doing something where I literally went to hug and I was just going to hug her as a fan, and then just me hugging her got a crazy reaction ... the next match, they just started chanting like 'Bayley's gonna hug you,' and that was never my thought of being like 'Oh I'm gonna be a hugger,' ... but it was from that match." Cody Rhodes talks to Bayley about the state of women's wrestling: What Do You Wanna Talk About? Bayley said the crowd helped shape her character. She also shared that the idea for her 'Hugger' style came from a movie character she loved growing up. "My character came from Superstar Molly Shannon, Superstar the movie. That's where I stemmed it from. I was like, 'Okay I can have all the nervous antics like her and then I could just be a super fan.' And Dusty [Rhodes] loved it." AJ Lee's advice has changed everything When Bayley first joined WWE, she felt out of place. She did not dress like the other women and was scared that she might lose her job. That is when AJ Lee stepped in to help her feel better and stay true to herself. "I thought I was going to get fired my first month because I wasn't girly enough, cause I didn't dress the part ... one of my bosses I guess asked AJ to talk to me because I was not dressed appropriately as in like, I didn't look presentable enough," Bayley recalled. AJ did not agree with the criticism and gave Bayley advice that made a big difference. "She looked at him, kind of annoyed at him, and was like 'I got it.' And then grabbed my arm and talked to me for an hour ... basically told me, 'You don't have to change yourself to get to where you want to be, but you do work for this company, so you need to meet them halfway' ... that again changed everything for me and that was when I started figuring out the hugger stuff."
