Gunnison man sentenced to 110 months in federal prison

GUNNISON, Colo. (KREX) – A Gunnison man who was previously convicted of a felony was sentenced to around 11 years in federal prison after he was found with a firearm. The U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Colorado announced Tuesday that Scott Oldenberg, 36, was sentenced to 110 months in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release. He pleaded guilty to being a felon possessing firearms and ammunition. 'Mr. Oldenberg has forfeited his right to own firearms,' said acting U.S. Attorney for the District of Colorado J. Bishop Grewell. 'Our office will continue to prioritize punishing felons in possession of weapons outfitted with machine gun conversion devices.' Oldenberg was identified as a possible burglary suspect on June 6, 2023, in Mount Crested Butte. Officers searched his vehicle and found two firearms and additional parts, including a silencer. One of the weapons recovered was fitted with a Glock switch, which causes a handgun to function as a machine gun. Oldenberg was previously convicted of a felony that was punishable by a year in prison. Due to this, he was barred from possessing a firearm or ammunition. 'We are grateful to our law enforcement partners for their dedication to this investigation and prosecution,' said Mt. Crested Butte Police Chief Nate Stepanek. 'This sentence reflects our continued commitment to ensuring public safety and holding offenders accountable for their actions.' Then, on June 25, 2023, Wheat Ridge law enforcement searched another vehicle in Oldenberg's possession, which was a Hertz rental car that was reportedly stolen. Officers recovered a 12-gauge shotgun, an AR-15 and additional firearm parts, including two suppressors, magazines and ammunition. 'It is a testament to Colorado law enforcement that our teamwork and collaboration results in the removal of so many dangerous individuals from our streets. I am proud of the members of the Wheat Ridge Police Department for the role they played in this multijurisdictional effort and the results,' said Wheat Ridge Police Chief Christopher Murtha. The Denver Field ATF Office, FBI Denver Field Office, Mount Crested Butte Police Department and the Wheat Ridge Police Department handled the investigation. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Police: Arvada, Wheat Ridge smash and grabs most likely connected; Lakewood resident says her stolen car was used

ARVADA, Colo. (KDVR) — Police are now saying multiple smash and grabs in the west metro area are most likely connected after new surveillance video is found. We first told you about two smash and grabs in Wheat Ridge last Friday. Now we've learned an Arvada liquor star was also hit just minutes before. Westminster police search for napping burglar The owner of Arvada Liquor Mart didn't want to go on camera, but said that as a small business, he's taken a hard hit even though the thieves didn't get inside. The suspects backed into his store multiple times, the damage costing $9,000. In the surveillance video you see the suspects back into the store multiple times before realizing they can't get in and leave the property. Two other smash and grabs happened within 15 minutes just after Arvada Liquor Mart was hit. Wheat Ridge Police Department's Public Information Officer Alex Rose said the agency was able to make the connection. 'About 15 minutes prior to the first call, we learned that there was an Arvada liquor store that was also a target. It's not uncommon for us to see this type of behavior because crime doesn't just stop at one jurisdiction and call it quits,' Rose said. The police investigation also revealed it's likely a stolen vehicle seen in the videos. A Lakewood resident, Kelli Baca, believes the white suburban seen in the surveillance videos is her stolen car. 'It's like you work your life to just have what you have and to know that my truck is being used to commit these crimes to local businesses is just — it's heart wrenching, it's disgusting, ' she said. Denver police search for suspect in DIA baggage thefts Baca said their family Suburban was stolen last Thursday morning from their driveway. Her husband had the car running and realized he left his phone inside. So, he decided to grab it and within seconds, the thieves were there. She said that after seeing FOX31's coverage, she knew it was her suburban because of window decals and other distinguishing features. 'I kept watching the video over and over again, hoping I was wrong, but no, it's our vehicle. I know it is, and it's just heartbreaking to know that if we even get it back it'll be a total loss because the damages that they're doing to these businesses, I can only imagine what it's doing to my vehicle,' Baca said. Police have yet to recover the vehicle and say they are still working on this multi-agency investigation. Arrest warrant issued, puppies rescued from Wheat Ridge motel up for adoption

DENVER (KDVR) — Eleven German shepherd puppies are doing much better after they were rescued from a motel in Wheat Ridge earlier this month, meanwhile an arrest warrant is out for their owner. Police officers with the Wheat Ridge Police Department rescued 11 puppies from a motel on Feb. 1. Community Services Officer Timothy Haines told FOX31's Nicole Fierro that the puppies were found living in unsanitary conditions, with dogs crammed in crates, feces in several places and one puppy was actively bleeding. Previous coverage: Body cam: Officers confront owner of 11 puppies rescued from Wheat Ridge motel Haines also said the mother was recently hit on Kipling Street due to neglect. The owner was issued a summons to appear in court for 11 counts of animal cruelty. Police said she did not show up for her court appearance that was scheduled for last week, and a warrant is now out for her arrest. The puppies were impounded and taken to a local shelter. It was discovered that all 11 of them had GI infections. Haines said they were playful and happy once they were acclimated and were happy to have some food and water. Tuesday, police said in a post on Facebook that the puppies are at Foothills Animal Shelter and are doing 'much better.' Some are now even ready for adoption. The police department said the shelter is looking to get the puppies in 'good homes with owners that will truly care for them.' The puppies are about three months old, and the adoption fees are about $500. More information about the puppies listed for adoption can be found on the shelter's website.
