David Byrne returns with first new solo album in seven years

David Byrne is returning to the charts with his first new solo album in seven years. The 73-year-old Talking Heads star is releasing Who Is the Sky? - his first solo project since 2018's American Utopia - in September and it features arrangements by New York chamber ensemble Ghost Train Orchestra as well as contributions from St. Vincent, Paramore frontwoman Hayley Williams and the Smile drummer Tom Skinner. Byrne said in a statement: "Someone I know said: 'David, you use the word 'everybody' a lot'. "I suppose I do that to give an anthropological view of life in New York as we know it. Everybody lives, dies, laughs, cries, sleeps and stares at the ceiling. "Everybody's wearing everybody else's shoes, which not everybody does, but I have done. "I tried to sing about these things that could be seen as negative in a way balanced by an uplifting feeling from the groove and the melody, especially at the end, when St. Vincent and I are doing a lot of hollering and singing together. Music can do that - hold opposites simultaneously. "I realized that when singing with Robyn earlier this year. Her songs are often sad, but the music is joyous." He went on to add: "At my age, at least for me, there's a 'don't give a shit about what people think' attitude that kicks in. I can step outside my comfort zone with the knowledge that I kind of know who I am by now and sort of know what I'm doing. "That said, every new set of songs, every song even, is a new adventure. There's always a bit of: 'How do I work this?' I've found that not every collaboration works, but often when they do, it's because I'm able to clearly impart what it is I'm trying to do. "They hopefully get that, and as a result, we're now joined together heading to the same unknown place." Byrne has released the album's first single Everybody Laughs and will hit the road for a world tour later this year. The trek kicks off in North American in September - with the first show in Providence, Rhode Island on September 14 - before heading to Australia and New Zealand in January and then on to the UK and Europe and in February. The tour is due to conclude in Paris, France on March 19.

Minneapolis Utopia: David Byrne heads to the Orpheum Theatre this fall

Minneapolis Utopia: David Byrne heads to the Orpheum Theatre this fall originally appeared on Bring Me The News. For the first time in seven years, David Byrne is releasing new music. The legendary Talking Heads singer will follow 2018's American Utopia with a new 12-track album, Who Is the Sky?, which will be accompanied by a tour that brings him and a large ensemble to the Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis on Nov. 3 and 4. He last passed through the Twin Cities on the American Utopia tour, playing the same downtown Minneapolis theater for a tour that later became a Broadway musical and a Spike Lee-directed concert film as well. The new album was recorded with the New York-based chamber music ensemble Ghost Train Orchestra, which also arranged the music. Who Is the Sky? also features appearances from Paramore's Hayley Williams, Smile drummer Tom Skinner, and St. Vincent, aka Annie Clark, with whom Byrne released a collaborative album in 2012. This go-round, the 73-year-old singer will perform with a 16-piece ensemble that includes musicians, singers, and dancers, some of whom were part of his American Utopia band. Similar to that tour, the announcement says that the performers "will be mobile throughout the set." The first taste of Who Is the Sky? was shared last week in a video for the anthemic "Everybody Laughs." A new music video of the Talking Heads' "Psycho Killer," starring Saoirse Ronan, was also recently released to celebrate the Talking Heads' 50th anniversary. Byrne's tour begins in September, passes through the Twin Cities in October, and will head to Australia, New Zealand, and Europe in 2026. Outside of Minneapolis, the tour's only other Upper Midwest pit stops are an Oct. 25 show at the Fox Theatre in Detroit and a three-night stand at The Auditorium in Chicago, beginning on Oct. 28. Tickets will go on sale at 10 a.m. on Friday, June 13. A presale begins on Tuesday through the list on Byrne's story was originally reported by Bring Me The News on Jun 10, 2025, where it first appeared.

David Byrne announces world tour and his long-awaited solo album 'Who Is the Sky?'

Fans of Talking Heads and David Byrne can rejoice, as the 73-year-old singer announced his first new album in seven years and tour. The album 'Who Is the Sky?' will hit streaming services and shelves on Sept. 5. Soon after, Byrne will kick off the North American leg of his tour, which features two shows in November at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. In 2026, he'll touch down in New Zealand before moving on to Australia and Europe. The 12-song album is led by the single 'Everybody Laughs,' released Tuesday alongside a music video directed by multimedia artist Gabriel Barcia-Colombo. 'Someone I know said, 'David, you use the word 'everybody' a lot.' I suppose I do that to give an anthropological view of life in New York as we know it,' Byrne said in a press release. 'Everybody lives, dies, laughs, cries, sleeps and stares at the ceiling. Everybody's wearing everybody else's shoes, which not everybody does, but I have done. I tried to sing about these things that could be seen as negative in a way balanced by an uplifting feeling from the groove and the melody, especially at the end, when St. Vincent and I are doing a lot of hollering and singing together,' he added. 'Music can do that — hold opposites simultaneously.' New York-based ensemble Ghost Train Orchestra arranged the album. It also includes collaborations with the aforementioned St. Vincent, Hayley Williams, and the Smile drummer Tom Skinner. Byrne's last album was 2018's 'American Utopia,' which eventually took the Broadway stage and in 2020 became a concert film directed by Spike Lee. But it wasn't a Byrne tour that fans were expecting. Talking Heads, for which Byrne served as lead singer between 1975 and 1991, released a teaser on June 2, including their song "Psycho Killer." Some even noticed that the date included in the short clip, June 5, is an important one in the band's history. 'The band played their first gig as Talking Heads — opening for the Ramones at the CBGB club — on June 5, 1975,' one fan commented. Instead of a tour announcement, fans received a music video for the song, highlighted by the appearance of Irish actor Saoirse Ronan. 'They waited until Saoirse Ronan was born to make the video,' another fan joked. 'Very professional.' Get notified when the biggest stories in Hollywood, culture and entertainment go live. Legendary '70s Singer Isn't Worried What Anyone Thinks Ahead of New Album

Legendary '70s Singer Isn't Worried What Anyone Thinks Ahead of New Album originally appeared on Parade. Talking Heads frontman David Bryne not only has new music on the way, but he's heading out on a world tour soon. The legendary singer, 73, just announced his album Who Is the Sky?, which is set to be released on September 5. Ahead of the new release, Bryne revealed in a press statement what's different this go-around, saying, 'At my age, at least for me, there's a 'don't give a sh-t about what people think' attitude that kicks in." 'I can step outside my comfort zone with the knowledge that I kind of know who I am by now and sort of know what I'm doing,' he added. The upcoming record brings together some major names, including Kid Harpoon, best known for his production on Harry Styles' 'As It Was' and Miley Cyrus' 'Flowers.' The album also features guest appearances from St. Vincent, Paramore's lead singer Hayley Williams and The Smile drummer Tom Skinner. Just over a week after the album drops, Byrne will kick off his international tour on September 14 in Rhode Island. The 2026 leg of the tour will take Byrne across Australia, New Zealand, Europe and the U.K. According to the press release, the live shows will include 13 other musicians, singers and dancers — all of whom will remain 'mobile' throughout the performance. Who Is the Sky? marks Bryne's first new album in seven years — his last release, American Utopia, came out in 2018. Byrne shared what he's been up to during his break, including exploring new hobbies. "I did a LOT of cooking (Mexican and Indian mostly) and a LOT of drawing," he said. While acknowledging the gap since his last album, Bryne explained how the time away actually helped shape his new music. "I've found that when the time comes, it's easier to start if there's a little stockpile – and before too long there was. Very rudimentary songs began to emerge, with just me on acoustic guitar singing over a programmed loop or beat."
