Storm Track 3 Forecast: Wednesday evening severe storms, heavy rain possible
There will be an increase in scattered showers and storms through this evening. A convoy of moisture will line up from our northwest counties to the southeast towards Wichita. A Tornado Watch is in effect until 10 PM Wednesday for several of our counties in Western Kansas into the Oklahoma Panhandle. Enough sunshine has peeked through the grungy clouds to the west, triggering isolated to severe thunderstorms this evening. The Slight Risk has been expanded over Kansas for extremely large hail and damaging winds along with the tornado threat. A warm front will lift into the state with an approaching low pressure system to help drive any severe weather into the overnight. With time, storms will cluster together into a complex of heavy rain overnight. A damaging wind threat will need to be monitored for the leading edge of this activity tonight. This complex will not divide the rain equally. Some will not get much. Others could gain more than an inch or two of beneficial moisture. Overnight lows will dip to the 50s with some near 60 degrees to the southeast. The bulk of the rain exits to the east early Thursday morning. Daytime heating may help enhance a random shower or storm Thursday afternoon around the backside of this system from central into eastern Kansas. By sundown, this system will be history. Highs Thursday afternoon will still be well below average for this time of year in the 60s and lower 70s. Clouds will generally thin by Thursday evening. Temperatures take a drive through the 70s with more sunshine on Friday. A quick-moving disturbance over the weekend will be capable of producing another batch of showers and storms late Saturday afternoon into the early overnight. Sunday should be a really nice day in the 80s. Next week looks active with one round after another of storms and severe weather. Monday favors Western Kansas with storms tracking eastward into Tuesday. The pattern will be repeated from mid to late next week. Rainfall will be heavy at times and accumulation potential looks high for many Kansans through the end of next week. Wet Wednesday as severe storms return
A few showers to the west have not been holding up too well. There could still be some raindrops around over the next few hours. A Flood Warning for Lyon County remains in effect until 5:21am Thursday. Some flooding has been reported near the Cottonwood and Neosho Rivers. Even though not much rain is around early this morning, dense fog may slow you down. A Dense Fog Advisory will be in effect until 10am. Once the Dense Fog Advisory expires there will be an increasing chance for showers and storms. Later in the afternoon is when stronger storms will begin to fire up, especially to the southwest. There is a risk for severe storms later today. All forms of severe weather will be possible. The greatest risk for tornadoes will be to the southwest. Please be weather aware later today and plan on being near a safe, sturdy shelter just in case. Storms will gradually cluster together through the evening. Showers and storms will track through the area through the night. Much of this activity will wrap up by daybreak Thursday but it may not be completely dry. Cloud cover and rain will continue to keep most of our high temperatures below the norm. Highs today will range from the low 60s to the low 80s. Hit or miss showers and storms will be possible through Thursday. Severe weather is not expected tomorrow. Friday will be drier as high pressure builds into the area. Temperatures will start to warm back up at the end of the week too. There is a small chance for a shower or storm Saturday but most of the weekend will be dry. Storm Track 3 Forecast: Comfy Thursday, storms around through holiday weekend
By early evening, we will see an uptick in showers and thunderstorms to the north. This activity will track to the southeast into portions of Central and Eastern Kansas tonight. There is a Marginal Risk outlined for the path of a stronger storm or two capable of higher winds and hail. This disturbance should exit before dawn on Thursday. Lows tonight will be chilliest to the northwest in the lower 40s and milder to the southeast in the 50s. Thursday will be dry and offer up a break before a more active stretch for the holiday weekend. Highs will be slightly cooler yet comfortable in the 70s. Some to the south will get into the 80s. On Friday, a few showers will be possible. We will need to watch any activity coming out of Eastern Colorado and if it can hold itself together once it crosses the state line and tracks East over Kansas. Friday night into early Saturday morning, showers and storms will blossom further. Some could be stronger for hail and high winds. These storms could also be efficient rain producers and drop a healthy amount of moisture in a short time. The atmosphere will continue to stay active with rain and storms on Saturday and Sunday. The threat for hail and higher winds will need to be watched in any stronger storm. The chance for rain will drop on Memorial Day. Temperatures will be coolest over northern Kansas and milder across the southern half of the state late in the weekend, trending below average for this time of year. After Memorial Day, it looks like we get into a pattern of frequent and daily storm chances rolling out of Eastern Colorado into Western Kansas. These storms could turn into beneficial complexes of rain and thunder. Good news for our drought with consistent moisture in the mix. Storm Track 3 Forecast: Random raindrops remain, pleasant weekend ahead
A hit or miss shower or thunderstorm will continue to pop across Kansas through this evening. Oklahoma sure has received the lion's share so far this week. This has skirted by our viewing area. The southeast part of Kansas has picked up a healthy 1″ to 3″ of liquid gold the last 3 days. Western Kansas has not had a drop! More hit or miss activity will track to the southeast overnight. A storm may try to bump up against the severe storm threshold but should largely behave. Severe storms have better ingredients in Oklahoma, Texas and Arkansas. Lows tonight will range from the cooler 40s in the west to the 50s farther east. With an approaching cold front on Thursday, any moisture will get steered around us. Southwest Kansas and extreme southern Kansas farther east may get clipped by more rain and storms into Thursday night. Highs on Thursday will remain in the 60s and 70s. We will have a series of beautiful spring days from Friday through the weekend. The next active stretch looks to hold off until Monday evening and only return to our western counties, initially. The rest of next week will provide more chances for showers and storms. The timing will need to be nailed down once we get closer along with any chances for severe weather. After all, 'it's gonna be May' when you can sneeze and get a severe storm. KSN Storm Track 3 Forecast from Chief Meteorologist Lisa Teachman:Wichita:Tonight: Mostly cloudy. 40% chance of showers and storms. Wet Wednesday, drier by Friday
Another day, another chance for showers and storms. Skies remain unsettled with spotty activity as we start the day. There is more rain to our south in Oklahoma that will move into the area. A risk of a strong to severe storm will be confined to Southwest Kansas and the southeast corner of the area. There is also still a threat of flooding to the southeast. Kay County in Oklahoma and Chautauqua County remain under a Flood Watch through Thursday morning. Rainfall through the first half of the day will favor Central and Eastern Kansas. Late in the afternoon and during the evening there will be a few new storms that develop and move into Western Kansas. Spotty activity will last through the night and into Thursday. High temperatures today will be near average in the upper 60s and low 70s. The chance for rain will be lower during the day Thursday. A cluster of showers and storms will move in from the west Thursday night. As storms initially move into extreme Southwest Kansas and our Oklahoma Panhandle Counties we will need to keep an eye on them. Rain and rumbles favor the southern half of the area as they track west to east through the night and into Friday. With the exception of the early morning hours, Friday is expected to be drier. The chance for showers and storms will be low over the weekend but another active pattern takes shape by next week.
