August bank holiday road closures to hit Wicklow as busy weekend begins
A series of road closures will take place this Saturday, from 10 am to 9 pm, to facilitate the Bray Air Display, including Strand Road and Harbour Road for the duration, Quinsborough Road and Florence Road east of Adelaide Road, Albert Avenue, Station Road, Seapoint Road, Sidmonton Avenue, Victoria Avenue, Convent Avenue and Putland Road east of the railway. Access to the closed roads will be available for pedestrians and emergency services only, with no alternative vehicle access to the seafront area of Bray available. Traffic management will be under the control of An Garda Siochána, and mitigation barriers will be in place for the duration of the event. On-street parking will not be allowed on the closed roads from 7am on Saturday, and no parking will be permitted for the entire length of Putland Road and Seapoint Road, which are emergency access routes for the air display. Vehicle towing will be in place from 7am under the direction of An Garda Siochána. 'Visitors to Bray during the Bray Air Display are advised to use public transport,' a Wicklow County Council spokesperson said. 'Extra transport services are being provided. Anyone intending to drive should pre-book a car space early online at the official event car parks while spaces are still available.' Meanwhile, the R764 from the junction at Roundwood Church to the junction of the L1076 Roundwood Park will be closed from 4pm this Sunday to 4am on Monday. Alternative routes will be in place via the R765 Knockraheen to Diamond Hill R764, to L1076 Roundwood Park. Motorists are advised to expect increased traffic due to the Wicklow Regatta, which runs until Monday, and the Tinahely Agricultural Show, which opens on Monday at 8.30 am and closes at 6pm.

Launch of Ireland's oldest maritime-themed festival crowns Wicklow Regatta Queen
The Wicklow Regatta dates back to 1878 and has continued every year since, apart from a break during World War II and another in the eighties, and is considered the oldest maritime-themed festival in all of Ireland. Natasha Moya Boyce, Victorriia Lytryn and Nicola Moran were all in the running for the title of Regatta Queen 2025, leaving judges Anee Tarpey-McNally and Niamh Comber with a particularly hard decision to make. Nicola, who operates a childcare service in Wicklow town, was bestowed with the honour of taking on the role of Regatta Queen for this year's festival, as she was presented with the crown by outgoing Regatta Queen Mariia Drobna. Déjà Vu also took to the stage at the launch to round the night off. The new Wicklow Regatta website, also officially went live at 12 noon on Friday, with McKenna Creative helping with its design. Wicklow Regatta chair John Goodman is looking forward to another action packed programme of events, running from Tuesday, July 22 through to Monday, August 4. He said: 'We have added a number of new exciting events to our programme. This year we have introduced a kite flying event which we hope proves popular. We will also have an astronomy talk and demonstration from Enda Kelly of Wicklow Skies Astrophotography taking place at Wicklow Sailing Club. He will provide a talk on how to get into astrophotography and he will also have a telescope on the roof of the sailing club for people to look through, depending on the weather. 'Pat Davis will be holding a talk on the murals he carried out along the South Quay of different visiting ships. It proved a great success last year and the crews from an Irish boat and a French boat actually visited Wicklow specifically for Pat's talk. 'We also have the return of plenty of our old favourites. The singing pubs competition gets underway on Tuesday, July 22, in the Brass Fox, and then continues throughout the regatta, We will have lots of live music in Market Square and buskers playing on the streets. 'Wicklow's Got Talent will be taking place at the Pastoral Centre and we have lots of activities lined-up for our family day taking place at St Patrick's NS on Saturday, August 2. The dog show always proves a major attraction, and another big event which always takes place is our duck race, which closes the festival. I think people get more craic from watching us trying to catch all the ducks at the end than they do from the actual race. You can purchase a duck from any of the other regatta events taking place. 'The fireworks display takes place on Sunday, August 3, and always attracts massive crowds. There is always plenty of fun to be had at our annual raft race, and 'Splash Sunday', where people can try out different water based activities, will be taking place at Wicklow Sailing Club.' While all the events are free, numbers are limited for some of them, so you are advised to register first at the Wicklow Regatta website in order to avoid any disappointment.
